Bromine is measured in flame-resistant wool fabric by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry with a relative precision of 3 to 8% and relative accuracy of better than 10%. The method computes the bromine concentration from fluorescence measurements of the sample, and a thin film standard, and two measurements of attenuation by the sample. Deviations of 10 to 20% from a straight-line relationship of x-ray counts to bromine concentration are accounted for. X-ray fluorescence is generally useful for routine analyses of bromine in textiles and has advantages over wet chemical analysis.

SummaryOlivine composition can be rapidly and accurately obtained by using standard (Straumanis-mounting) 57·3 mm X-ray powder cameras. A determinative curve based on analysed natural olivines has been constructed by plotting the mol. % Fo against the spacing of back-reflection line 174. The regression equation for the composition range Fo100 to Fo30 isFo (mol. %) = 4151·46−3976·45 d174using Fe-Kα1 radiation. The fayalite end (Fo30 to Fo0) of the determinative curve shows a relatively sharp break from a straight-line relationship of d-spacing versus composition. Practical applications of the determinative curve are briefly presented.

ABSTRACTA wet-chemical process for depositing and patterning RuO2 contacts for use in ferroelectric thin film capacitive devices is described. Three new ruthenium compounds containing photocrosslinkable organic groups have been synthesized which polymerize upon UV exposure. Preliminary pattern forming ability of the new precursors has been tested with the use of a simple straight line contact mask. The exposed portions of the precursor films are resistant to ethanol, acetone, and light abrasion. The formation of crystalline RuO2 upon organic pyrolysis was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. Synthesized ruthenium complexes were compared to commercially available ruthenium acetylacetonate. The synthesized organo-ruthenium complexes showed improvement in pattern resolution and clarity.

AbstractEnergy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry has been applied to the high speed analysis of uranium ore for the purpose of grading and sorting truckloads of ore at the mine. The system is able to analyze uranium ore in less than 60 seconds with uranium levels ranging from < 0.005% to > 5% U3O8. Precision at the 2σ level for 200 ppm ore is better than 10% relative. Good agreement is obtained with wet chemical results in a large variety of rock matrices.

AbstractAnalysis schemes for eleven rare earths (Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) taken singly in Y-Fe garnet powders are presented. Straight-line calibrations result in all cases, usually over a range from below 0.5 wt.% to better than 6 wt.%. Errors were held to ±5-10% even using extraordinarily simple sample preparation techniques. Data are presented relating to the effects of particle size and sample preparation on precision and accuracy of the resulting analysis.

ABSTRACTA low temperature preheating process is developed for metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth of GaAs on wet chemical pretreated Si substrates. NH4 OH/H2 O2 is found to be most effective in decreasing the preheating temperature among the chemicals we tried: NH4 OH/H2 O2, H2SO4 /H2O2, or hot HNO3. By using NH4OH/H2 O2, the preheating temperature is reduced from 1000°C to 875°C. X-ray diffraction measurements and surface observations with an atomic force microscope (AFM) show that the GaAs film quality obtained with the 875 °C preheating process is better than that obtained with 1000°C preheating.

SummaryA diagram of the relationship between d174 and % forsterite in olivines is presented in fig. 1 of the preceding paper by Jambor and Smith. In this note, statistical aspects of Jambor and Smith's data are considered in detail and compared to equivalent data by Yoder and Sahama (1957). This analysis leads to the conclusion that the relationship of mol. % Fo and d174 or d130 can be expressed as a straight line for Fo > 30 %. Olivines with Fo < 10 % are not related to this straight line.

AbstractFluorescent X-ray spectrographic analyses have been made for the oxides Fe2O3 caO, MgO, K2O, TiO2, and MnO on samples of amphibolite rock. In addition, the above oxides and SiO2 and Al2O3 have been determined in a suite of constituent hornblendes from these rocks.Classical wet chemical analyses of materials of the same minera logical composition as the samples are used to establish the working curves. This eliminates the necessity for Internal standardization or other treatment of the samples. The only sample preparation involves extremely fine grinding before analysis.Precision of the analyses is equivalent to, or better than, that achieved by wet chemical methods.

A new approach for the precise grinding of crankshaft pin is presented. In which, noncircular following strategy is investigated based on the motion model consists of horizontal feeding axis, additional lifting axis for wheel frame, and the active rotary axis for workpiece. The straight line relationship of wheel center, pin center and grinding point is ensured by the synchronism between standard arc interpolation motion of wheel frame and eccentric circular motion of pin section. Comparing with traditional tangential point tracing scheme, both constant grinding line-speed and simple control algorithm are fulfilled simultaneously. The negative effect of perpendicular deviation introduced by lifting axis is kinematically analyzed as well as the dynamic response error of servo system, and solving methods are carried out accordingly. By computer simulation and experimental test, the reported noncircular following strategy emerges good characteristics in the manufacturing of crankshaft, such as a strong adaptability for wheel wearing, simple motion control and high roundness precision.
