Communicating affection is important for developing and maintaining relationships; yet, it can be risky when it is used deceptively. Grounded in affection exchange theory (AET), the purpose of the present study is to test how types of deceptive affection—or incongruity between affection felt and expressed—predicts relational health differently across three relational contexts: romantic relationships (RRs), cross-sex friendships (CSFs), and friends with benefits relationships (FWBRs). Multiple group analyses using structural equation modeling ( n = 526 college students) revealed varying relational types provide both intensified and withheld affection, with FWBRs experiencing both types of deceptive affection the most. Furthermore, intensified affection is positively related to relational health outcomes in RRs, and withheld affection negatively predicts relational health in FWBRs. Findings suggest that differences exist between relational types and both types of deceptive affection and relational health. Theoretical implications for expanding AET Postulates 3 and 5 are discussed.

[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] The use of affection in relationships plays an important role in developing and maintaining relationships (Floyd, 2006). However, affectionate communication can also provide substantial risks to individual and relational health when it is misattributed (Floyd and Burgoon, 1999, Floyd and Voloudakis, 1999a). The present dissertation assessed 526 participants to examine the process of deceptive affection, both intensified and deintensified, as a communicative tool used to satisfy goals, and how the use of deceptive affection relates to relational health within three relational contexts: friends with benefits, cross-sex friendships, and romantic relationships. The Deceptive Affection Scale (DAS) was created to assess individuals' use of deceptive affection. Results suggest FWBRs produce more deceptive affection, both intensifying and deintensifying, than cross-sex friendships and romantic relationships. Additionally, different goals predicted the use of intensified and deintensified deceptive affection across relational contexts. Finally, results would suggest that deintensifying affection has minimal influence on relational outcomes, however, intensifying affection is negatively associated with relational health. The current study contributes to the expanding literature on affection, particularly deceptive affection, affection exchange theory, and FWBR literature. Implications for findings, limitations, and areas of future research are addressed.

PurposeThe present study tries to develop a model that assesses the factors that determine support for tourism development by residents of the Kashmir region.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data have been collected (n = 650) from the residents of the top five tourist destinations through a pre-tested questionnaire by a multistage convenient sampling method. A model has been drafted and tested through the technique of structural equation modeling by applying the social exchange theory as a theoretical framework.FindingsThe results revealed that residents who perceived more benefits were more expected to support tourism development, and residents who perceive more costs were less expected to support tourism development, thus supporting the social exchange theory.Originality/valueThe results of this study are extremely useful for the local government and tourism institutions in the future planning of tourism development and also fill the vast gap in the tourism literature with a theoretical base.

In this article, we study how attitudes toward the integration of immigrants (multiculturalism and assimilation) are formed through the interplay between immigration-related threat perceptions, intergroup contacts, and the different migratory backgrounds of residents in a host country. The analysis is conducted using Multiple Group Structural Equation Modeling on data from the 2008 Luxembourg European Values Study. Our findings indicate that stronger perceptions of threat are related to more support for assimilation among all residents and to less support for multiculturalism among native residents and culturally close immigrants. More contact with natives is associated with more support for assimilation among culturally close immigrants and with more threat perceptions among culturally distant immigrants.

Purpose: To establish a model of Japanese pharmacy students’ learning motivation profile and investigate the effects of pharmaceutical practical training programs on their learning motivation. Methods: The Science Motivation Questionnaire II was administered to pharmacy students in their 4th (before practical training), 5th (before practical training at clinical sites), and 6th (after all practical training) years of study at Josai International University in April, 2016. Factor analysis and multiple-group structural equation modeling were conducted for data analysis. Results: A total of 165 students participated. The learning motivation profile was modeled with 4 factors (intrinsic, career, self-determination, and grade motivation), and the most effective learning motivation was grade motivation. In the multiple-group analysis, the fit of the model with the data was acceptable, and the estimated mean value of the factor of ‘self-determination’ in the learning motivation profile increased after the practical training programs (P= 0.048, Cohen’s d= 0.43). Conclusion: Practical training programs in a 6-year course were effective for increasing learning motivation, based on ‘self-determination’ among Japanese pharmacy students. The results suggest that practical training programs are meaningful not only for providing clinical experience but also for raising learning motivation.

The aim of this research is to examine the impact of vigilant, devoted, and self-sacrificing personality styles on intimacy (engagement, communication, shared friends) among young adults in romantic relationships (dating/married). A total of 1000 respondents aged 20-40 years old completed questionnaires on personality styles (Personality Self-Portrait) and intimacy (Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships). Data analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) shows a significant impact of self-sacrificing personality styles on engagement (γ = -0,511, p < 0,01) and communication (γ = -0,361, p < 0,01). There are also significant influences of vigilant (γ = -0,225, p < 0,05) and devoted personality styles (γ = 0,132, p < 0,05) to shared friends. The impact of self-sacrificing personality styles indicates the importance of both parties’ involvement in influencing their relationship. Besides, being too sensitive (vigilant personality styles’ characteristic) and having a sense of comfort in relationships with others (devoted personality styles’ characteristic) could influence how individuals engage in social relationships outside their romantic relationships. Key words: Intimacy, personality styles, romantic relationshipsAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan melihat pengaruh ciri kepribadian vigilant, devoted, dan self-sacrificing, terhadap intimacy (engagement, communication, shared friends) pada dewasa muda yang sedang menjalin hubungan romantis (berpacaran/menikah). Sebanyak 1000 responden berusia 20-40 tahun mengisi alat ukur ciri kepribadian (Personality Self-Portrait) dan intimacy (Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships).

The present study is centered on mobile hotel reservations in the investigation of the interrelationships between value, attitude, satisfaction, and reuse intention in consideration of the moderating roles of the channel familiarity and the channel type. Utilizing a quantitative approach, the research hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling and multiple-group analyses. The casual relationships proposed among the study variables were found to all be significant, and the importance of the utilitarian value was substantiated. Moreover, the analysis results denoted that the channel familiarity is an important moderator that affects the strength of the relationships between (1) the attitude and the reuse intention and (2) satisfaction and the reuse intention, which suggests that a different approach should be arranged for novice and expert users. Also, channel type moderated the links between (1) hedonic value and satisfaction, (2) utilitarian value and satisfaction, (3) attitude and the reuse intention, and (4) satisfaction and the reuse intention, which separately provided more relevant implications for the hotel owned and the third-party owned channels.
