Army induction scores on the Armed Forces Qualification Test were available on 50 acute schizophrenics, 30 chronic schizophrenics, and 50 enlisted men. The Army General Classification Test was administered to the acute schizophrenics within 1 wk. after being hospitalized for schizophrenia, to the chronic schizophrenics up to 20 yr. after their first hospitalization for schizophrenia and to the enlisted men some time after induction. Difference scores were computed for all Ss by subtracting the standard test score of the AGCT from the standard score of the AFGT received at induction. The three groups were matched on education and test performance at induction. At the second testing, both acute and chronic schizophrenics scored significantly below controls. However, the chronic schizophrenics were not differentiated from the acute schizophrenics on test performance. Results suggested differential deficit in chronic schizophrenics but not in acute schizophrenics. Implications for further research were drawn.

This article introduces a new, performative framework for analysing intellectuals and intellectual interventions. It elaborates on the strengths of this theoretical perspective vis-à-vis rival approaches and develops this frame of reference by exploring key constituent concepts, including positioning, script and staging. The article then exemplifies the framework and demonstrates its applicability by exploring a public intellectual performance by Jean-Paul Sartre. To conclude, the article reflects on recent shifts in public intellectual performances, especially changes that are relatively durable and connected to the rise of new media.

Perinatal Stroke involves an often poorly understood neurocognitive events affecting the fetus and the new born with a potential for serious intellectual outcome.Our aim is to present a case study on the issue of neurocognitive defects on domains such as intellectual performance, attention and vigilance, executive functioning, visual perception, speed of processing, verbal learning and memory, and working memory on a 6 year old girl with perinatal arterial ischemic stroke.

Blood tyrosine concentrations were followed from birth to nursery discharge in 71 premature infants fed a high protein formula supplemented by 60 mg/day of ascorbic acid. In 89% of infants blood tyrosine concentrations were abnormal, and in 38% of infants the maximum level observed was 15.0 mg/100 ml or higher. Maximum blood tyrosine levels correlated significantly with gestational age (p = < 0.05) but not with birth weight. In a follow-up study performed at 15 months of age, infants with high tyrosine levels had no increase in the incidence of neurological abnormalities. Between 7 and 8 years of age a second follow-up study was performed on 62 children. This included a WISC, a Wide-Range Achievement Test (WRAT), and tests for psychomotor and language maturity. Two children had died in the interval, and five of the 62 were retarded for full testing. The full scale WISC I.Q. of all children correlated with birth weight at the 10% confidence level (p = < 0.1). The mean WISC I.Q. of high and low tyrosine subjects was 82.9 and 81.6 respectively. When infants were grouped by birth weight, a significant difference was detected in subjects weighing 2,000 gm or more. High tyrosine infants had a significantly lower performance I.Q. than low tyrosine infants (82.4 and 97.8 respectively; p = < 0.02). Significant differences were recorded in the scores on Object Assembly, Picture Assembly, and Picture Completion of the WISC. Significant differences were also seen on the Spelling subtest of the WRAT (p = < 0.02). We observed no adverse effect of high tyrosine levels on the intellectual performance of smaller premature infants, who on the whole have a greater risk for other complications of prematurity.

Thirty-six patients with a confirmed diagnosis of phenylketonuria (PKU) were identified and placed on dietary therapy before reaching 121 days of age. These children are currently between 4 and 6 years old, and have been given the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. Subsequently, their normal siblings of closest age were selected as matched-pair controls and were also tested with the Staford-Binet. The mean age of the PKU sample when tested was 50.0 months, and 50.9 months for the normal controls. The 36 index patients scored a mean IQ of 94 and their nonaffected siblings obtained a mean IQ of 99. This five-point mean difference was significant at the .02 level, and suggests the presence of a minimal intellectual impairment associated with PKU, even when treatment begins early and is rigorously monitored.
