As an Afterword to the Special Issue on “The Sacramental Text Reconsidered,” this essay consolidates approaches to sacramentality in literary studies in four dimensions, and these dimensions are symptomatic of the wider sub-field and the larger context of literary studies at present. Those four ways are: the sacrament as a historical trajectory; the sacrament as concept, and also the vehicle of conceptual amnesia; the sacrament as language; the sacrament as literature.

This special issue on anthropology and literature invited proposals for original contributions focusing on relationships between anthropology and literature. We were especially interested in the following questions: what role does literature play in anthropology? Can literature be considered as ethnography? What are the relationships between anthropology and literature, past and present? Are anthropology and anthropological motives used in literature? We also looked for critical readings of writers as anthropologists and critical readings of anthropologists as writers. Moreover, we wanted to assess the influence of literature on the invention of traditions, rituals and cultural performances. All these different questions and topics are clearly connected with the study of literacy, illiteracy and popular culture. They also lead to questions regarding potential textual strategies for ethnography and the possibilities of bringing together the field of anthropology (more associated with the social sciences) and literary studies (traditionally part of the humanities).

Narrative analysis represents the cutting edge in various domains of political communication research and has recently made its way into populism studies. Nevertheless, despite the growing academic interest in populist storytelling and populist narratives, a conceptual foundation of these phenomena remains scarce. Situated at the intersection of political communication and literary studies, the article fills this gap by proposing a systematized concept of a populist narrative. Building upon the minimum definitions of the background concepts, the study identifies a set of necessary attributes shared by populist narratives. It further discusses the effectiveness of populist narratives with the focus on four dimensions: archetypal structure, emotionality, suspensefulness, and ability to facilitate identification. Against the backdrop of the increasing role of storytelling in contemporary politics, the article facilitates a more coherent and meaningful examination of populist narratives.

This article is an introduction to a special issue on signal coding and compression. We begin by defining the concepts of digital coding and audiovisual signal compression. We then describe the four dimensions of coding performance: bit rate, signal quality, processing delay and complexity. We illustrate the two basic principles of audiovisual coding, removal of signal redundancy and the matching of the quantizing system to the properties of the human perceptual system, with specific recent examples of coding algorithms. We then summarize standards for, and applications of audiovisual signal compression. A fast-emerging application is the internetworking of audiovisual information, a field that is too recent to be covered in the articles in this collection. We conclude our article by presenting our views about future research directions in the field.

The Shield Margin Project of the National Geoscience Mapping Program (NATMAP) resulted in a new understanding of the Paleoproterozoic Flin Flon Belt (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) in four dimensions. A multidisciplinary approach was utilized in the NATMAP project, based on partnerships with government, university, and private sector geoscientists, and close cooperation with the Lithoprobe's Trans-Hudson Orogen Transect. Research areas spanned from bedrock and surficial geoscience, to crustal and mantle geophysics, to high precision U-Pb geochronology and tracer isotope studies. This Special Issue contains nine papers covering a wide variety of topics related to the NATMAP Shield Margin Project, including volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits in the Flin Flon and Snow Lake camps; structural geology of the Flin Flon townsite and southern flank of the Kisseynew Domain; geochronology and the U-Pb systematics of monazite in metasedimentary rocks; and the geoelectrical and crustal conductivity structure of the Flin Flon Belt.

This article first discusses ‘the reader’ as generally conceived within literary studies (including stylistics), grounding its claims with an empirical analysis of articles published in Language and Literature from 2004 to 2008. It then surveys the many ways in which real readers have been empirically investigated within cultural studies, the history of reading, and cultural sociology. Lastly, it introduces the remaining papers in this special issue as contributions to the study of language and literature.

AbstractLiterature is often considered the creative expression of language par excellence. This coda considers how the perspectives from Construction Grammar, as they are outlined in this special issue, can enter into dialogue with recent developments in how literary studies address creativity. Construction Grammar concerns itself with the productive generation and manipulation of language in everyday contexts, but, as this special issue goes to show, these processes can also be discussed in terms of creativity and deployed to shed light on creative processes in the arts. Convergences between Construction Grammar and (cognitive) literary studies appear to emerge in particular around the question of creative practice in literary language and (1) in how far writing gives rise to particular kinds of creativity; (2) how one can generalize between different creative media, such as literature, painting and music; and (3) how writing-based creativity can be investigated. Literary studies with its interests in media environments, social/historical context and textual analysis might provide a larger testing ground for claims about the compatibility and incompatibility of everyday and literary creativity as they are put forward in this special issue.
