Curriculum compacting is an instructional strategy that can be used by classroom teachers to modify and/or eliminate curriculum material that has already been mastered, or can be mastered in a fraction of the time, by students of above average ability. In this experimental research study, the effects of three increasing levels of treatment on the instructional practices of elementary school teachers as they implemented curriculum compacting are reported. Approximately 470 teachers from 27 school districts across the country participated in this study sponsored by The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT). This article will report: the content areas in which various percentages of curriculum could be compacted; the strategies used by teachers to identify subject matter previously mastered by students; the assessment strategies utilized by teachers to document proficiency of curriculum material; and the nature and type of replacement strategies teachers used after curriculum was compacted. Results suggest that elementary teachers are able to eliminate between 24–70% of the curriculum across content areas for more capable students. It was also clear from the results that classroom teachers need considerable assistance to design challenging and rigorous replacement activities.

This article presents the results of the administration of the Nelson-Denny Reading Test to three populations: (1) two groups of elementary school teachers assigned for inservice training, (2) elementary school teachers who volunteered for inservice training and also volunteered to participate in a research study, and (3) teachers participating in a summer institute. Findings indicate minimum functional literacy skills among some teachers assigned to inservice training, and evidence that even some participants in teacher trainer institutes function at levels barely literate. These findings indicate the necessity for more strict evaluation of persons completing preservice training, applying for teacher certification, applying for continuing contracts, and serving in the classroom.

Nutrition education and physical education in schools is increasingly being explored as a way to prevent childhood overweight and to promote healthy eating and physical activity habits behaviors. Classroom teachers are often responsible for providing this education. The current study examined the roles and perspectives of elementary school teachers regarding student nutrition, nutrition education, and physical education. Data is from a 2001-2002 study of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Nutrition Network. Analyses were based on 78 structured interviews with elementary school teachers. Results showed that teachers perceive their role in nutrition education as teachers, role models, advocates, and motivators. Teachers integrate nutrition education into existing subject areas, and believe that nutrition education results in greater knowledge and healthier food choices. However, teachers report that too little time is spent on nutrition education. Results of this study also indicate that classroom teachers are often responsible for physical education (PE). Teachers believe PE has a positive effect on the school community and on student fitness, but the effect is limited due to lack of structure and lack of time in PE class. Teachers report barriers to both nutrition education and physical education, including other classes taking up too much time, limited teacher training, and a lack of adequate equipment and facilities. Findings suggest that more resources including teacher training, time, curricula and textbooks, and equipment need to be allocated for nutrition education and physical education at the elementary school level.
