Purpose: To compare the performances of 4 imaging systems in the diagnostic radiology of the chest: an asymmetric screen-film combination (a-SFC); a conventional screen-film combination of speed class 200 (SFC); a screen-film combination of speed class 200 with an aluminium lung filter; and digital luminescence radiographs (DLR). Material and Methods: Object detectability studies were carried out using an anthropomorphic chest phantom. The images were obtained under standard exposure conditions at 125 kVp. The detection performance of the various systems was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis on the basis of a total of 12 240 observations. Results: In the overall evaluation the a-SFC and the SFC plus lung filter received equally high ratings of 0.878±0.018 and 0.860±0.21, respectively (p>0.05). There was no significant difference between the 200-speed SFC and the storage phosphor radiographs. In the mediastinum all the tested systems were clearly superior to the 200-speed SFC (p<0.05) while in the lung fields the 200-speed SFC received a high rating of 0.866±0.026. The a-SFC had slight advantages over the SFC plus lung filter and the 2 digital imaging modes (p>0.05). Conclusion: The a-SFC and the digital luminescence radiographs provide a significant gain in diagnostic information in the mediastinum without diminishing detail detectability in the lung fields and without additional radiation exposure.

Abstract This study is aimed to determine the appropriate timing of performing surgical reduction on trapdoor fractures for bringing out better visual outcomes and the factors influencing surgical outcomes in this special subgroup of fracture victims. Data for 72 patients of orbital trapdoor fracture were analyzed retrospectively. Post- operative diplopia is the main posttreatment outcome of orbital bone fracture reduction. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis indicated the cut-off point of surgical reduction timing at day 10 post-fracture. The rate of postoperative diplopia showed a significant difference between patients who underwent surgical reduction within 10 days and those who did after 10 days of injury (5.3% vs. 38.2%). Multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative infra-duction limitation (p=0.02), muscle incarceration (p=0.01), duration from injury to surgical reduction (p=0.004), and postoperative supra-duction limitation (p=0.004) were independent factors for poor surgical outcomes. In younger patients with head injury, the diagnosis of orbital trapdoor fracture should be kept in mind. Timely recognition and surgical reduction, especially within 10 days, can result in better visual outcomes without the occurrence of postoperative diplopia.

Background Five-megapixel (MP) displays are recommended as soft copy devices for digital mammogram. An 8-MP liquid crystal display (LCD) (two 4-MP displays within one display) might offer the advantage of being able to view biplane mammography more easily than the dual planes of 5-MP LCDs. Purpose To compare detectability of Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 3 or higher lesions and reading time on mammography between 5- MP and 8-MP LCDs. Material and Methods The mammograms of 240 breasts of 120 patients including 60 breasts with BI-RADS category 3 or higher lesions and 180 breasts with normal or category 2 lesions were enrolled. All bilateral mammograms were displayed on bifacial 5-MP LCDs or an 8-MP LCD (two 4-MP displays within one display). Six radiologists assessed 240 breasts on each display. The observations were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. A jack-knife method was used for statistical analysis. We employed a paired t-test to determine whether any significant differences existed in the reading time between two different displays. A P value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results The mean areas under the ROC curve obtained using 5-MP and 8-MP LCDs were 0.925 and 0.915, respectively, and there was no significant difference ( P = 0.46). There was also no significant difference in the reading time between two types of displays (57.8 min. vs. 51.5 min, P = 0.39). Conclusion The detectability of BI-RADS category 3 or higher lesions and reading time using an 8-MP LCD were comparable to those using a 5-MP LCD.

SummaryBackground/Aim: The aim of the present study is to evaluate diagnostic accuracy of two generic image receptors with CMOS and PSP sensors for image quality scoring (IQS), burnout incidences (BI) and cervical widths (CW) with regard to four different exposure times.Material and Methods: 43 incisor teeth within 15 paraffin block models were exposed at 4 different exposure times both for the CMOS and PSP groups, and a total number of 120 images were obtained. All images were evaluated by 3 dentomaxillofacial radiologists via 3 different criteria; IQS, BI, CW.Results: Diagnostic quality scorings between groups displayed statistically significant difference for 0,1; 0,125 and 0,16 sec exposure times. PSP group revealed higher IQS. For 0,125 and 0,16 seconds exposure times, PSP group showed higher percentages of BI. Average CW were lower in PSP group. Although no statistically significant difference was found between average CW vs. exposure times in the CMOS group; PSP group revealed significant differences among exposure times. We can state that, the PSP system displayed higher image quality so exposure times can be reduced, alas, the same conclusion is not possible with CMOS system used.Conclusions: Image quality perception is higher in PSP system we used, compared with CMOS system. PSP system display more burnout effects with increasing exposure times, while CMOS system is constant.

The extent to which the researcher can quantify the morphology determines the strength of the link. To aid the polymer microscopist in these tasks, digital imaging systems are becoming more prevalent. Advances in computers, digital imaging hardware and software, and network technologies have made it possible to implement digital imaging systems in industrial microscopy labs.

Summary Aim: Tumor scintigraphy with 201-TICI is an established diagnostic method in the follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer. We investigated the relationship between thyroglobulin (Tg) level and tumor detectability. Subject and methods: We analyzed the scans of 122 patients (66 patients with proven tumor). The patient population was divided into groups with Tg above (N = 33) and below (N = 33) 5 ng/ml under TSH suppression or above (N = 33) and below (N = 33) 50 ng/ml under TSH stimulation. Tumor detectability was compared by ROC-analysis (True-Positive-Fraction test, specificity 90%). Results: There was no significant difference (sensitivity 75% versus 64%; p = 0.55) for patients above and below 5 ng/ml under TSH suppression and a just significant difference (sensitivity 80% versus 58%; p = 0.04) for patients above and below 50 ng/ml under TSH stimulation. In 18 patients from our sample with tumor, Tg under TSH suppression was negative, but 201-TICI-scan was able to detect tumor in 12 patients. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate only a moderate dependence of tumor detectability on Tg level, probably without significant clinical relevance. Even in patients with slight Tg elevation 201-TICI scintigraphy is justified.

Background: Laguna-ONhE is an application for the colorimetric analysis of optic nerve images, which topographically assesses the cup and the presence of haemoglobin. Its latest version has been fully automated with five deep learning models. In this paper, perimetry in combination with Laguna-ONhE or Cirrus-OCT was evaluated. Methods: The morphology and perfusion estimated by Laguna ONhE were compiled into a “Globin Distribution Function” (GDF). Visual field irregularity was measured with the usual pattern standard deviation (PSD) and the threshold coefficient of variation (TCV), which analyses its harmony without taking into account age-corrected values. In total, 477 normal eyes, 235 confirmed, and 98 suspected glaucoma cases were examined with Cirrus-OCT and different fundus cameras and perimeters. Results: The best Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis results for confirmed and suspected glaucoma were obtained with the combination of GDF and TCV (AUC: 0.995 and 0.935, respectively. Sensitivities: 94.5% and 45.9%, respectively, for 99% specificity). The best combination of OCT and perimetry was obtained with the vertical cup/disc ratio and PSD (AUC: 0.988 and 0.847, respectively. Sensitivities: 84.7% and 18.4%, respectively, for 99% specificity). Conclusion: Using Laguna ONhE, morphology, perfusion, and function can be mutually enhanced with the methods described for the purpose of glaucoma assessment, providing early sensitivity.

The aim of the study was to improve monitoring the treatment response in breast cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). The IRB approved this prospective study. Ultrasound examinations were performed prior to treatment and 7 days after four consecutive NAC cycles. Residual malignant cell (RMC) measurement at surgery was the standard of reference. Alteration in B-mode ultrasound (tumor echogenicity and volume) and the Kullback-Leibler divergence (kld), as a quantitative measure of amplitude difference, were used. Correlations of these parameters with RMC were assessed and Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was performed. Thirty-nine patients (mean age 57 y.) with 50 tumors were included. There was a significant correlation between RMC and changes in quantitative parameters (KLD) after the second, third and fourth course of NAC, and alteration in echogenicity after the third and fourth course. Multivariate analysis of the echogenicity and KLD after the third NAC course revealed a sensitivity of 91%, specificity of 92%, PPV = 77%, NPV = 97%, accuracy = 91%, and AUC of 0.92 for non-responding tumors (RMC ≥ 70%). In conclusion, monitoring the echogenicity and KLD parameters made it possible to accurately predict the treatment response from the second course of NAC.
