The defect identification process within the UK rail industry has seen significant improvements over the past decade with the introduction of new measurement systems and defect detection systems. Although significant work has been on the defect identification little work has been done on the process after the defect has been detected. This repair process is still extremely manual. Due to the current process being manual the repair operation has very little traceability and transparency. This paper has therefore presented the need for not only a defect detection system but a defect repair system for the UK railway industry. Further to this, this paper has acknowledged that the rise of defects occurring on the UK railway lines requires a solution that can fully repair a defect with little to no user intervention in a timely manner. To address this, this paper has taken the extremely manual process of rail repair and has laid out the possibilities to automate this process. By doing this a work flow diagram has been generated to show how the system could be used to repair surface defects with a specific focus being made on squat defects. To achieve this a defect detection and measurement system has been explored, as this will make up the first stage of the automated repair system. The literature on various defect detection algorithms was reviewed and two variations of existing defect detection algorithms were created, i.e. the Covariance method and the Normal Intersection method. These algorithms have been tested against 100 simulated squat defects and have been verified using 4 experimentally generated defects. Both algorithms have been proven to not only identify the approximate size of the defect but also its location. This successful defect identification will be integrated into an automated rail repair system.

Early detection of rail defects can avoid derailments and costly damage to the train and railway infrastructure. Small breaks, cracks or corrugations on the rail can quickly propagate after only a few train cars have passed over it, creating a potential derailment. The current technology makes use of a dedicated instrumented car or a separate railway monitoring vehicle to detect large breaks. These cars are usually equipped with accelerometers mounted on the axle or side frame. The simple detection algorithms use acceleration thresholds which are set at high values to eliminate false positives. As a result, rail surface defects that produce low amplitude acceleration signatures may not be detected, and special track components that produce high amplitude acceleration signatures may be flagged as defects. This paper presents the results of a feasibility study conducted to develop new and more advanced sensory systems as well as signal processing algorithms capable of detecting various rail surface irregularities. A dynamic wheel-rail interaction model was used to simulate train dynamics as a result of rail defects and to assess the potential of this new technology on rail defect detection. In a future paper, we will present experimental data in support of the proposed model and simulations.

Defect detection is the most important step in the postpartum reprocessing of kiwifruit. However, there are some small defects difficult to detect. The accuracy and speed of existing detection algorithms are difficult to meet the requirements of real-time detection. For solving these problems, we developed a defect detection model based on YOLOv5, which is able to detect defects accurately and at a fast speed. The main contributions of this research are as follows: (1) a small object detection layer is added to improve the model’s ability to detect small defects; (2) we pay attention to the importance of different channels by embedding SELayer; (3) the loss function CIoU is introduced to make the regression more accurate; (4) under the prerequisite of no increase in training cost, we train our model based on transfer learning and use the CosineAnnealing algorithm to improve the effect. The results of the experiment show that the overall performance of the improved network YOLOv5-Ours is better than the original and mainstream detection algorithms. The [email protected] of YOLOv5-Ours has reached 94.7%, which was an improvement of nearly 9%, compared to the original algorithm. Our model only takes 0.1 s to detect a single image, which proves the effectiveness of the model. Therefore, YOLOv5-Ours can well meet the requirements of real-time detection and provides a robust strategy for the kiwi flaw detection system.

The existing seal ring surface defect detection methods for aerospace applications have the problems of low detection efficiency, strong specificity, large fine-grained classification errors, and unstable detection results. Considering these problems, a fine-grained seal ring surface defect detection algorithm for aerospace applications is proposed. Based on analysis of the stacking process of standard convolution, heat maps of original pixels in the receptive field participating in the convolution operation are quantified and generated. According to the generated heat map, the feature extraction optimization method of convolution combinations with different dilation rates is proposed, and an efficient convolution feature extraction network containing three kinds of dilated convolutions is designed. Combined with the O-ring surface defect features, a multiscale defect detection network is designed. Before the head of multiscale classification and position regression, feature fusion tree modules are added to ensure the reuse and compression of the responsive features of different receptive fields on the same scale feature maps. Experimental results show that on the O-rings-3000 testing dataset, the mean condition accuracy of the proposed algorithm reaches 95.10% for 5 types of surface defects of aerospace O-rings. Compared with RefineDet, the mean condition accuracy of the proposed algorithm is only reduced by 1.79%, while the parameters and FLOPs are reduced by 35.29% and 64.90%, respectively. Moreover, the proposed algorithm has good adaptability to image blur and light changes caused by the cutting of imaging hardware, thus saving the cost.

The existing pedestrian detection algorithms cannot effectively extract features of heavily occluded targets which results in lower detection accuracy. To solve the heavy occlusion in crowds, we propose a multi-scale feature pyramid network based on ResNet (MFPN) to enhance the features of occluded targets and improve the detection accuracy. MFPN includes two modules, namely double feature pyramid network (FPN) integrated with ResNet (DFR) and repulsion loss of minimum (RLM). We propose the double FPN which improves the architecture to further enhance the semantic information and contours of occluded pedestrians, and provide a new way for feature extraction of occluded targets. The features extracted by our network can be more separated and clearer, especially those heavily occluded pedestrians. Repulsion loss is introduced to improve the loss function which can keep predicted boxes away from the ground truths of the unrelated targets. Experiments carried out on the public CrowdHuman dataset, we obtain 90.96% AP which yields the best performance, 5.16% AP gains compared to the FPN-ResNet50 baseline. Compared with the state-of-the-art works, the performance of the pedestrian detection system has been boosted with our method.

Solar cells may possess defects during the manufacturing process in photovoltaic (PV) industries. To precisely evaluate the effectiveness of solar PV modules, manufacturing defects are required to be identified. Conventional defect inspection in industries mainly depends on manual defect inspection by highly skilled inspectors, which may still give inconsistent, subjective identification results. In order to automatize the visual defect inspection process, an automatic cell segmentation technique and a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based defect detection system with pseudo-colorization of defects is designed in this paper. High-resolution Electroluminescence (EL) images of single-crystalline silicon (sc-Si) solar PV modules are used in our study for the detection of defects and their quality inspection. Firstly, an automatic cell segmentation methodology is developed to extract cells from an EL image. Secondly, defect detection can be actualized by CNN-based defect detector and can be visualized with pseudo-colors. We used contour tracing to accurately localize the panel region and a probabilistic Hough transform to identify gridlines and busbars on the extracted panel region for cell segmentation. A cell-based defect identification system was developed using state-of-the-art deep learning in CNNs. The detected defects are imposed with pseudo-colors for enhancing defect visualization using K-means clustering. Our automatic cell segmentation methodology can segment cells from an EL image in about 2.71 s. The average segmentation errors along the x-direction and y-direction are only 1.6 pixels and 1.4 pixels, respectively. The defect detection approach on segmented cells achieves 99.8% accuracy. Along with defect detection, the defect regions on a cell are furnished with pseudo-colors to enhance the visualization.

With the large-scale construction of urban subways, the detection of tunnel defects becomes particularly important. Due to the complexity of tunnel environment, it is difficult for traditional tunnel defect detection algorithms to detect such defects quickly and accurately. This article presents a deep learning FCN-RCNN model that can detect multiple tunnel defects quickly and accurately. The algorithm uses a Faster RCNN algorithm, Adaptive Border ROI boundary layer and a three-layer structure of the FCN algorithm. The Adaptive Border ROI boundary layer is used to reduce data set redundancy and difficulties in identifying interference during data set creation. The algorithm is compared with single FCN algorithm with no Adaptive Border ROI for different defect types. The results show that our defect detection algorithm not only addresses interference due to segment patching, pipeline smears and obstruction but also the false detection rate decreases from 0.371, 0.285, 0.307 to 0.0502, respectively. Finally, corrected by cylindrical projection model, the false detection rate is further reduced from 0.0502 to 0.0190 and the identification accuracy of water leakage defects is improved.
