The purpose of this study is to explore and compare community (2-year) college librarians’ perceptions of their competencies, challenges, and educational preparation with those of librarians at 4-year colleges. Researchers created survey questions based on previous studies and distributed the survey through online mailing lists. The survey results indicated that community college instructional librarians’ responses were generally not statistically significantly different from 4-year university librarians in terms of what skills, traits, and educational needs were most prevalent. From the perspective of career challenges, community college instructional librarians cited marketing and changing perceptions/needs of content area faculty, while the librarians at 4-year universities cited burnout and class overload. These differences reveal the substantial challenge of preparing instructional librarians according to the types of libraries and instructional approaches.

Aims: We aim to identify the educational needs and feasible educational modalities for specialist nurses working with ophthalmic patients in a tertiary eye centre in Singapore. Design: This was a mixed-method study utilising paper-based surveys and focus groups with nurses working at a tertiary eye centre in Singapore. Participants: One hundred nurses were invited to respond to the survey, with a response rate of 91%. Two focus groups with a total of 19 nurses were facilitated. Methods: Participants completed a modified Hennessy–Hicks survey. Among these participants 19 were invited to participate in a focus group. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed on the survey results. Focus groups were analysed using the inductive thematic analysis procedure described by Braun and Clarke. Findings: The participants in this study reported a need for ophthalmic-specific education programmes, more training in patient education and a need to broaden clinical exposure and experience. Conclusion: For ophthalmic nursing, where the workforce and patient population are considered relatively small, and postgraduate programmes are limited, the need to develop local education strategies to meet workforce needs has emerged.

The purpose for conducting the study was to explore and describe the use of alumni societies and associations in community colleges, particularly focusing on the intended outcome of their implementation. To collect data for the study, a research-team developed survey instrument was distributed electronically to 250 community college advancement senior leaders. A total of 106 (42%) usable surveys were returned for use in the study. The results of the data collection and analysis described community college expectations for alumni societies, and that this expectation was primarily focused on fundraising. The societies were also critical, however, in career placement for students, developing career-oriented programs, and reviewing curricula. Survey results also indicated that many community college leaders use alumni societies in creative ways, including assisting in faculty searches, hosting recruitment events, and teaching community education (lifelong learning) courses. Study findings are critical for college leaders who are often faced with difficulties in funding existing or new programing. The respondents to the study illustrated how alumni societies can serve as critical catalysts for improving existing programs and expanding the reach and value of the institution. Findings also suggest that alumni societies are perceived to be strong gateways to developing philanthropic support for institutions.

Survey data on manufacturing firms are usually analysed on an aggregate basis, calculating for each question the so-called "balance" between the number of positive and negative replies. The simple average of selected balances is then commonly used to calculate the confidence indicator. While balance and confidence indicators provide an easy-to-compute and easy-to-understand quantification of survey results, and therefore are considered useful tools to analyse the sector's cyclical situation, a cyclical analysis based on balance and confidence indicators alone fails to fully exploit all the information embedded in the survey. More specifically, computation of the balance statistic disregards "neutral" answers to survey questions and no attempt is made to identify potential relationships between the different responses to the various survey questions given by the same firms. A more in-depth study of this information can provide interesting insights into firms' opinions on the economic situation. The contribution presents a new methodology based on cluster analysis that takes into account also the neutral answers and then uses it to assess the similarities and differences between the recent crisis and current recovery, and to compare these to past cyclical crises, specifically, the major recession of 1992-1993 and subsequent recovery in 1993-1995.
