Whistleblowing and the ‘Person-Situation’ Conundrum: What Matters More?

This article extends the knowledge on whistleblowing by studying the impact of two individual antecedents (moral foundations and personality traits) and two situational factors (ethical leadership and leader–member exchange) on whistleblowing intentions. We presented 203 management students with a situation and assessed their likelihood of whistleblowing. Model estimations found strong support for situational factors overpowering the individual factors in determining the whistleblowing intentions. We found that ethical leadership was positively, and leader–member exchange negatively related with whistleblowing. In the presence of these situational factors, neither the Big Five personality traits, nor the moral foundations of a person seemed to matter in predicting an individual’s whistleblowing behaviour.

Personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that are organized and relatively enduring and that influence their interactions with, and adaptations to, the intra psychic, physical, and social environments. Personality is the factor which influences other functioning of the individuals, keeping this view in mind its relation with consciousness was thought to be explored, which is awareness, the ability to experience or to feel, wakefulness, having a sense of selfhood, and the executive control system of the mind. Hence, this study was designed to understand the relationship between big five personality traits and consciousness, for this, the data was collected from 200 working and non-working males and females in the age range of 22 to 30 years. Sample was chosen from Banasthali Vidyapith, Tonk; Rajiv Gandhi Technical Institute, Raibarely; and Wipro Company, Bangalore. Measures used were self-consciousness scale (Fenigstein, Scheier &Buss 1975) which is a 23 item questionnaire and personality questionnaire: NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 (NEO-FFI-3). This questionnaire was developed by Paul T. Costa, Jr and Robert R. McCrae (1989). The result indicated that openness and conscientiousness are significantly positively related with consciousness and openness emerged out as the significant predictor of consciousness. Also the significant difference was found between males and females in terms of consciousness. This study is unique in its endeavor and creates scope for further exploration in this field.

The article aims to analyse and explain the relationship between ethical leadership, organisational deviance. We proposed a theoretical framework arguing a mediatory role of situational factors including psychological safety, psychological attachment, distributive justice, and Leader-Member Exchange (LMX). We also argue that utilitarian based ethical reasoning make employees more responsive towards the ethical decision by the leadership making them less deviant. Empirical validity was established by conducting a survey using a close-ended questionnaire. Data was collected from 254employees and analysed using confirmatory factor analysis and structured equation modelling. The measurement and structure model were assessed using AVE (average variance extracted), Composite Reliability (CR), Cronbach’s alpha, discriminant validity through the Fornell-Larcker Criterion, and Collinearity methods in PLS-SEM. The results suggested a significant and positive effect of ethical leadership on Leader-member-exchange, psychological attachment, distributive justice, and psychological safety. Moreover, apart from distributive justice, all other factors seem to decrease Organisational Deviance, however, their effect remained insignificant. Surprisingly, ethical leadership (EL) seems to be directly instigating Organisational Deviance (OD), as well as through the mediation of distributive justice. However, EL seems to significantly reduce deviance through including Utilitarianism ethical reasoning amongst its followers, as EL seems to positively affect utilitarianism, which in turn negatively affects deviance. Utilitarianism also seems to complement EL in reducing OD directly as the result showed significant and negative complementarities amongst EL and Utilitarianism in explaining OD. The results imply that EL and OD nexus is more affected by ethical reasoning rather than situational factors.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to study organizational attachment and Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) according to the personality traits of leaders in the beauty salon industry in order to provide basic data for providing better working environment and maintaining stabilized employment. This study studied the impact of the personality traits of superiors in the beauty salon industry on LMX through surveys for beauty salon industry workers residing in Seoul Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi Province, and found that diligence, extroversion, stability, friendliness, and openness had a significant positive effect (+); diligence, stability, friendliness, and openness of superiors in the beauty salon industry had significant positive impact (+) on organizational attachment; and mediation effect was found for LMX in the correlation of personality traits of superiors in beauty salon industry and organizational attachment. This shows that superiors who are diligent and adhere to organizational rules may extend to organizational attachment, and that good LeaderMember Exchange (LMX) may lead to help in many aspects in work. Carrying out job-training through individual personality tests and having a horizontal communication system will be able to provide emotional stability and sense of belonging to employees, boosting work efficiency. This paper hopes that based on the results of this study, continuous study will be carried out to complement results, ultimately being utilized in stable state of employment and long service with the organizational attachment of beauty salon industry employees. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to study organizational attachment and Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) according to the personality traits of leaders in the beauty salon industry in order to provide basic data for providing better working environment and maintaining stabilized employment.

Personal concerns about climate change and the environment are a powerful motivator of sustainable behavior. People’s level of concern varies as a function of a variety of social and individual factors. Using data from 58,748 participants from a nationally representative German sample, we tested preregistered hypotheses about factors that impact concerns about the environment over time. We found that environmental concerns increased modestly from 2009-2017 in the German population. However, individuals in middle adulthood tended to be more concerned and showed more consistent increases in concern over time than younger or older people. Consistent with previous research, Big Five personality traits were correlated with environmental concerns. We present novel evidence that increases in concern were related to increases in the personality traits neuroticism and openness to experience. Indeed, changes in openness explained roughly 50% of the variance in changes in environmental concerns. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the individual level factors associated with changes in environmental concerns over time, towards the promotion of more sustainable behavior at the individual level.

In this study we explored the impact of English usage on Facebook (EUF) and the Big Five personality traits of 164 Taiwanese university students on their level of achievement in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, we found that EUF was positively associated with extraversion and conscientiousness, but negatively related to neuroticism. The results of a simultaneous multiple regression analysis indicated that EUF, extraversion, and neuroticism accounted for a statistically significant amount of variance in EFL achievement. Of the variables, EUF made the largest significant unique contribution to the prediction of the participants' EFL achievement.
