This article reviews the current literature relating to occupational Information. It examines the various types of occupational information, the role of occupational information in career education and career counselling, perceptions of end-users and practitioners and the influence of occupational information on career outcomes. The immense amount of literature covers studies in the United States, Australia and United Kingdom, and in the main the studies are concerned with the effect of occupational information on, and its relationship with, tertiary level students. The review forms part of a study which examined the extent to which occupational information met the needs of users at a critical time of career decision making, that is, when Victorian school leavers were considering changing their preferences for tertiary level courses after receiving their final Year 12 results.

Adolescents are involved in career decision making at various times during their secondary education. Career education programs provided to assist with this process tend to be school specific and vary in content and depth according to the time allocated and the expertise and training of school personnel. Insufficient time or insufficient training can cause career education to be oversimplified. However, to underestimate the complexity of career decision making and treat it simplistically using a reductionist approach is to disadvantage both adolescents and school personnel. It is essential to consider career decision making in context — not to disregard the reductionist approach but to place it in a contextual frame where the impact of contextual elements on career decision making can be examined. Thus career education and career counselling can be challenging and satisfying for both adolescents and school personnel as they explore the complex issues related to career decision making.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) refers to the tendency to fear the unknown and to worry excessively about potential future negative outcomes. In the career decision-making process, college students experience uncertainty regarding the future of occupational opportunities and the evolution of their interests and capabilities. Anxiety is a well-established predictor of career indecision. Therefore, this study examined the role of anxiety as a mediator in the relation of IU and rumination to three dimensions of career decision making difficulties among college students ( N = 678). Results of path analyses indicated that as hypothesized, after controlling for age, intolerance of uncertainty was directly and indirectly (though anxiety) related to the three dimensions of career decision making difficulties: lack of readiness, lack of information, and inconsistent information. Results suggested that career choice interventions may be enhanced with a targeted emphasis on coping with the uncertainty involved in career decision making among college students.

Over the past few decades, researchers have been trying to understand the career decision-making process from interpersonal and affective perspectives. Previous findings suggest that secure attachment is negatively linked to career indecision, but the extent to which other variables mediate this relation is less clear. The present study was designed to identify underlying mechanism in the relation between attachment and career indecision. This was done by examining a model which links secure attachment with career indecision through the mediating role of emotional intelligence. Participants included 362 female undergraduate students from a large Southern University. A path model was tested to investigate (a) the direct association of attachment to three dimensions of career indecision (lack of readiness, lack of information, and inconsistent information) and (b) whether emotional intelligence mediates the relations between attachment and the career indecision dimensions, while controlling students’ age. Results indicated a very good fit for the proposed path model. With two exceptions, results provided support for the study’s hypothesis regarding the direct and mediated links in the model; all paths were in the expected direction. Results of the study provide support for the notion that different antecedents may explain career decision-making difficulties, and therefore, college women may require diverse intervention approaches

The present study examined the role of social class in the career decision-making of undergraduate students attending a private university. Grounded theory was used to describe the process of social class and undergraduates’ career interests and plans. Interviews with undergraduate students ( N = 21) resulted in four categories and 13 axial codes. The grounded theory emerging from the data was labeled, social class fragility. Social class fragility captured the career goals and behaviors associated with participants’ striving for an acceptable career choice, based upon their social class contexts. The contextual factors described by participants included relational influences, social class consciousness, and vocational privilege. Results are discussed in terms of career interventions with college students attending universities that encapsulate upper middle-class norms.

It is known that gifted high-school students tend to have difficulty in choosing career due to their wide-range interests and capabilities. In order to successfully making an appropriate career choice, having a high level of career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) is an important precondition. CDMSE is the belief in one’s ability to successfully complete the task necessary to make career-related decisions. Of several factors known to be affecting CDMSE, previous study has shown that career decision-making attribution (CDMA) could affect students CDMSE. However, the CDMA effect on CDMSE in gifted student is seemed to be related to personal trait of students, namely emotional intelligence (EI). Therefore, this study aims to examine the moderating role of EI on the impact of gifted high-school student CDMA on CDMSE. Subjects in this study were gifted high school students (N = 165; 52.12% males; M-age = 16.20 years old) in Jakarta. The measurement tools used are CDMSE Scale Short-Form, Assessment of Attribution for Career Decision Making, and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short-Form (TEIQue-SF) adapted into Indonesian language. The data were analyzed using simple regression analysis with Hayes PROCESS model. It was found that there is a direct effect of CDMA on CDMSE with (F (1,163) = 10.6661, p = .0033 < .001), in which CDMA serves as a predictor of CDMSE. We also found that EI can serve as a predictor of CDMSE (F (1,163) = 10.6661, p = .0007<.001. However, EI did not moderate the CDMA-CDMSE relation. Discussion, limitations, and suggestions for further research are listed.

Past research on career decision-making has focused on two distinct modes of decision-making: logic and intuition. In this study, we extend that two-system model of career decision-making and examine the role of two additional decision-making modalities: advice seeking and spiritual discernment. We conducted two independent studies through which we develop and validate a Career Discernment Scale by examining its dimensions and internal reliability (Study 1), followed by research to establish discriminant and convergent validity (Study 2). Results provide initial support for the dimensionality and reliability of four distinct career decision-making factors, demonstrated by a clear factor structure and internal consistency. In addition, our results show evidence of convergent and discriminant validity through expected correlations across a nomological network of individual differences. Overall, this article highlights the unique role of spirituality and advice seeking in career decision-making with implications for career development and practice.

This article investigated the moderating role of creative self-efficacy (CSE) on the relationship between career exploration and career decision-making difficulties among French undergraduate students ( N = 415). Drawing a parallel between the career decision-making process and the notion of creative problem-solving, we reasoned that career exploration without CSE—that is, the confidence in one’s own ability to solve original and complex problems—can be associated with career decision-making difficulties. Our study shows that among students who have low levels of CSE, environmental exploration, and self-exploration regarding career options are respectively associated with dysfunctional beliefs regarding one’s career path and general indecisiveness. We discuss the implications of the results.
