Smaller Businesses and Relationship Banking: The Impact of Participative Behavior

Although the venture capital industry is undoubtedly of Importance, the majority of finance to smaller businesses continues to be provided by the banking sector. The provision of finance to these businesses is generally thought to be characterized by Information asymmetries, which are likely to lead to some form of credit rationing. To the extent that credit rationing occurs, viable enterprise may be lost. While collateral is commonly cited as a means of counteracting the information asymmetries that lead to credit rationing, an alternative mechanism is to improve the flow of information between business and bank. This is most commonly achieved through the development of a close working relationship. The success of such a relationship depends upon the willingness of both parties to involve themselves with each other and work together. This paper examines the nature of the banking relationship, paying particular attention to the idea of relationship participation and the benefits that accrue to both parties as a result of participation. Using data from over 3000 UK small firms, It is possible to identify four broad relationship types based on the degree to which the bank and the business participate in the relationship. A comparison across different relationship types suggests that there are considerable benefits associated with more participative relationships.

In this article we assess credit rationing across European countries by analyzing the impact of banking competition on the access to finance of firms. The importance of the financial sector in promoting the sustainable economy is recognized by the European Union, that has taken the lead in efforts to build a financial system that supports sustainable growth. However, it should be acknowledged that in highly competitive business environments, it is not easy to challenge the existing paradigms, since companies need to be profitable in addition to improving their environmental performance. Using data from European firms Survey on the Access to Finance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), our results, using Probit regression, support the Market Power Hypothesis, outlining that more concentrated banking markets are characterized by higher levels of credit rationing. Also, our results reveal that small firms are more credit rationed compared to large firms. The analysis shows that financial constraints are stronger in the countries more affected by the financial crisis.

This article has two purposes: (a) to examine the relationship between intercultural power relations and the widespread practice of accent discrimination and (b) to underscore the ramifications of accent discrimination both for the individual and for global society as a whole. First, authors review social theory regarding language and group identity construction, and then go on to integrate more current studies linking accent bias to sociocultural variables. Authors discuss three examples of intercultural accent discrimination in order to illustrate how this link manifests itself in the broader context of international relations (i.e., how accent discrimination is generated in situations of unequal power) and, using a review of current research, assess the consequences of accent discrimination for the individual. Finally, the article highlights the impact that linguistic discrimination is having on linguistic diversity globally, partially using data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and partially by offering a potential context for interpreting the emergence of practices that seek to reduce or modify speaker accents.

Little is known about the relationship between social comparison orientation and mental health, especially in the psychological capital context. We proposed a theoretical model to examine the impact of ability- and opinion-based social comparison orientation on mental health using data from 304 undergraduates. We also examined the mediating effect of the four psychological capital components of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism in the relationship between social comparison orientation and mental health. Results show that an ability (vs. opinion) social comparison orientation was negatively (vs. positively) related to the psychological capital components. Further, the resilience and optimism components of psychological capital fully mediated the social comparison orientation–mental health relationship. Our findings indicate that psychological capital should be considered in the promotion of mental health, and that the two social comparison orientation types have opposite effects on psychological capital.

ABSTRACTWe offer a preliminary examination of whether national and organizational level contexts amplify or reduce the effects of de-globalization on the performance of MNCs. Theoretically, we borrow ideas from both event system theory and institutional fit to propose a model explicating key dimensions of the relationship between de-globalization, national and organizational context, and MNC performance. We then test our ideas using data assembled from 283 MNCs in 20 countries. We find that while de-globalization has a negative effect on MNC performance, national and organizational level contextual endowments do moderate this relationship. We discuss some implications of our findings and highlight attendant limitations.

To clarify the relationship between changes in photochemical oxidants’ (Ox) concentrations and their precursors in Kawasaki, a series of analyses were conducted using data on Ox, their precursors, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and meteorology that had been monitored throughout the city of Kawasaki for 30 years from 1990 to 2019. The trend in air temperature was upward, wind speed was downward, and solar radiation was upward, indicating an increasing trend in meteorological factors in which Ox concentrations tend to be higher. Between 1990 and 2013, the annual average Ox increased throughout Kawasaki and remained flat after that. The three-year moving average of the daily peak increased until 2015, and after that, it exhibited a slight decline. The amount of generated Ox is another important indicator. To evaluate this, a new indicator, the daytime production of photochemical oxidant (DPOx), was proposed. DPOx is defined by daytime averaged Ox concentrations less the previous day’s nighttime averaged Ox concentrations. The trend in DPOx from April to October has been decreasing since around 2006, and it was found that this indicator reflects the impact of reducing emissions of NOx and VOCs in Kawasaki.

In last few decades, employees’ job related attitudes and behaviors have remained topics of considerable interest in the fields of organizational behavior and human resource management. This study aims to explore the impact of person-organization-fit and person-job-fit on employee turnover intention while considering psychological climate as a mediating variable. Sample for this research is consisted of 260 employees from top five commercial banks of large cities of Pakistan. SPSS 17 is used for analyzing the data. Correlation and regression analysis is used to test the direct and mediating relationship between key variables. Results indicate that both person-organization-fit and person-job-fit have negative relationship with turnover intention. Psychological climate partially mediates the relationship between person-organization-fit and turnover intention while fully mediates the relationship between person-job-fit and turnover intention.

With the rapid development of information technology, information security has been gaining attention. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has issued international standards and technical reports related to information security, which are gradually being adopted by enterprises. This study analyzes the relationship between information security certification (ISO 27001) and corporate financial performance using data from Chinese publicly listed companies. The study focusses on the impact of corporate decisions such as whether to obtain certification, how long to hold certification, and whether to publicize information regarding certification. The results show that there is a positive correlation between ISO 27001 and financial performance. Moreover, the positive impact of ISO 27001 on financial performance gradually increases with time. In addition, choosing not to publicize ISO 27001 certification can negatively affect enterprise performance.

An investigation is conducted on the effect of financial distress on customer service levels in the U.S. airline industry. Using data from the first quarter of 1998 to the third quarter of 2006, we employ a seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) model to analyze the impact of financial distress on three measures of customer service. We find that higher financial distress is associated with better on-time performance of airlines and fewer lost bags. The relationship of airline financial distress to the number of bumped customers, however, is insignificant.

The objective of this paper is to explore the impact of amotivation on academic performance and to test whether the impact of motivation on academic performance differs across students from China and the U.S. Using data from Chinese and U.S. students located in their home countries, we find amotivation negatively impacts academic performance of both groups of students. We also show that external motivation is positively associated with academic achievement. While these findings are consistent with results from previous studies, we extend the understanding on the relationship between motivation and academic performance by demonstrating that the magnitude of the detrimental impact of amotivation differs between students in the two countries and that the positive impact of higher levels of external motivation provides similar benefits for both groups of students.

Abstract. The globalization of markets, the need to comply with modern economic trends and introduce new technological solutions to increase the profitability of the banking business have significantly intensified the processes of mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector. M&A processes are long and complex, their results are difficult to forecast in lack of actual detailed research. The diversity of the results of the available research requires updating the data based on larger volumes of transactions and larger time intervals. The purpose of the article is to substantiate two hypotheses: first, the impact of M&A agreements especially on the increase in the value of banks; and impact of factors that show economic development level on the value of banks. The object of the study is the relationship between the value of commercial banks in domestic and foreign financial markets, M&A agreements, as well as economic indicators published by the World Bank and measuring the level of economic development of countries. The article uses statistical modeling method. The constructed model of linear regression allows to state that the fact of influence of M&A on growth of cost of consolidated banks is fair for 54.8% of cases. The study shows that the M&A processes have the greatest impact on the value of banks in the interval of 3—5 years after the conclusion of the agreement. Analysis of the relationship between economic indicators and the growth of bank value shows that the greatest impact on the value of banks has percent of the growth of GDP and GDP per capita, but the low value of the determinant at 22.9% indicates a low dependence of bank value on the level of economic indicators in general. It was found that external factors do not directly affect the growth in the value of banks in the process of M&A transactions. The question of expanding the system of factors that will influence the M&A processes and, as a consequence, the value of the banks, will be the subject of further research.
