The purpose of this study was to examine how a delineated coaching process affected the ability of caregivers to take the lead in promoting their children’s learning in the context of daily activities. In addition, the correspondence between caregivers’ initiations during the intervention and their rate of improvement after the intervention was investigated. One provider coached three culturally diverse caregivers to use development-enhancing strategies with their children who evidenced moderate–severe disabilities. The coaching process designated by the acronym SOOPR, include targeted information sharing (S), observation and provision of opportunities for the caregiver to practice new skills with provider feedback (OO), problem solving and reflection (P), and review of the session (R). Results reveal that all three caregivers increased their initiations of three of four development-promoting behaviors: teaching, responsiveness, and encouragement. The descriptive data across sessions for each triad suggest that as the intervention progressed, the frequency of specific coaching strategies decreased which may have fostered the caregivers’ opportunities to take the lead in the sessions. In addition, a consistent pattern of direct proportionality between caregiver rate of improvement after the intervention and caregiver initiations during the intervention was identified. Study limitations and implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract Few interventions for family caregivers of persons with dementia (PwD) focus on both dementia care skill-building and the enhancement of acceptance and compassion towards oneself and the PwD. We designed a multicomponent, mindfulness-based 4-session caregiver intervention (Practice of Acceptance, Awareness, and Compassion in Caregiving, or “PAACC”) to reduce burden in caregivers of family members with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) and TBI-related AD. A prospective, randomized trial design is being implemented to compare the effectiveness of PAACC to the well-known, evidence-based REACH-VA intervention. Seventeen family caregivers (Mean Age = 68.71 years; 82% women; 30% had high school or less education) have participated in the trial thus far and provided qualitative responses to acceptability questions. High acceptability was noted for all intervention components of PAACC. Participants completed 95% of mindfulness homework during the study period. A majority also reported practicing spontaneous, informal mindfulness while engaged in daily activities (e.g., going for a walk, cooking). One participant noted incorporating mindfulness in her daily spiritual practice. The majority remarked that PAACC taught them to be more aware and accepting of the PwD’s illness. Others mentioned becoming more aware of which stressors triggered them, and that they were able to avoid arguments with the PwD because of this increased awareness. Overall, our results suggest that this mindfulness-based multicomponent intervention is a promising method for promoting stress reduction for family caregivers of persons with dementia regardless of age, stage of dementia, education level, or rurality. Implications for research and practice will be discussed.

The article describes novel and successful projects involving musicians with severe disabilities and adolescent music students. The Nádizumzuzum Orchestra consists of adult members of a nursing home. They are able to play music with a newly developed method called Consonate. The young musicians are students of the Zoltán Kodály Hungarian Choir School. This article presents the historical and socio-political background of the project to illustrate how music therapy grows from particular cultural and political circumstances of Hungary, and therefore takes a particular Hungarian form and flavour. The article also reflects on the wider context of the international research and practice of Community Music Therapy.

Abstract:Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is increasingly recognized as a growing public health issue worldwide. Although more research is needed on both the diagnosis and treatment of FASD, and a broader and more culturally diverse range of services are needed to support those who suffer from FASD and their families, both research and practice for FASD raise significant ethical issues. In response, from the point of view of both research and clinical neuroethics, we provide a framework that emphasizes the need to maximize benefits and minimize harm, promote justice, and foster respect for persons within a global context.

The Problem Today’s workers face constant economic, social, scientific, and technological change — a challenging climate for learning. Learners need to integrate and balance acting, reflecting, thinking, and feeling as they negotiate within this everchanging environment. The Solution This Special Issue explores workplace learning’s power through the understanding and application of reflective practices which are often informal and incidental and occur as individuals engage and learn from the experience of their daily activities. The Stakeholders HRD scholars and practitioners will benefit from an understanding of the tools and practices that facilitate workplace learning through reflection. This Special Issue provides a theoretical framing of workplace reflection, situates reflection in various contexts, offers examples of use in the workplace, addresses its risks, and raises questions for both research and practice.

Purpose is understood to reflect young people’s stable and generalized commitments to accomplish meaningful activity and contribute productively to society. Religion has been linked with purpose; however, the nature of this relationship is not well understood. Given that purpose and religion involve beliefs and devotion, the current study examined fidelity as a means of understanding this relationship in a group of religiously and culturally diverse youth from around the world. The participants were 30 adolescents aged 12-21 (M = 17.73 years) nominated for living with profound spirituality in their community. Consensual qualitative research (CQR) strategies were used. Analysis revealed that 29 of the participants reported a sense of purpose and all 30 participants described some aspect of fidelity that involved (a) beliefs, (b) values, (c) morals, and (d) resolute commitment. These findings highlight the centrality of fidelity as a link between religion and purpose among diverse youth. Future directions for research and practice are discussed.

Background: This cross-sectional study is aimed at describing and investigating empowerment and its relationships with level of engagement in daily activities and community life, experienced stigma, psychopathology, and quality of life among people with mental illness entering supported employment. Method: The following scales were administered to 120 persons: Empowerment Scale, Profiles of Occupational Engagement Scale, Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life Scale, Rejection Experience Scale and Brief Psychiatric and Rating Scale. Results: Higher scores of empowerment were associated with fewer symptoms and experienced stigma, a higher level of engagement in daily activities and community life, better quality of life and having work rehabilitation. Self-efficacy and self-esteem were in particular significantly correlated to depressive symptoms. Descriptive statistics enveloped the group of participants that said ‘Yes I want to work’ with a somewhat high mean score for empowerment, level of engagement and quality of life, but a low mean score with regard to both symptoms and experienced stigma. Conclusions: This study advocates the importance of evaluating empowerment in supported employment research and practice. The findings suggest the importance of taking into account not only monetary aspects of having a job but also social and psychological aspects such as empowerment, reduction in experienced stigma and community integration.
