Background: Breastfeeding education is critical in improving healthcare professionals’ competencies in providing breastfeeding care to mothers. We evaluated breastfeeding competencies, training, barriers and satisfaction of breastfeeding educational experiences among nurses and midwives in the Sagnarigu Municipality, Ghana. Methods: This cross-sectional study included nurses and midwives providing maternal and child health services at various primary healthcare facilities in Sagnarigu Municipality. Results: Nurses and midwives had higher pre-service breastfeeding training than in-service training with a mean training score of 10.0 and 5.2, respectively. Nurses and midwives who had both pre-service and in-service training had better satisfaction score ( P = .003), positive attitudes ( P = .016) and higher confidence level about breastfeeding ( P = .007). Approximately, 80% of the nurses and midwives reported that they need further training/updating on breastfeeding while 40% reported clinical/professional practice as the significant contributor to their breastfeeding counselling competencies. Mean satisfaction score correlated positively with confidence levels about breastfeeding counselling ( r = .224, P = .022) and pre-service training ( r = .342, P < .001); confidence levels about breastfeeding counselling also correlated positively with attitudes towards breastfeeding counselling ( r = .348, P < .001). Commonly reported barriers to breastfeeding counselling were mother’s poor compliance with breastfeeding recommendations, too much workload, inadequate time and materials for breastfeeding counselling. Conclusion: Nurses and midwives in this study felt confident about breastfeeding counselling, had positive attitudes towards breastfeeding counselling and generally, satisfied with their breastfeeding educational experiences. Despite nurses and midwives agreeing that breastfeeding counselling is integral in their professional practice, their role in providing breastfeeding counselling is hindered by individual and health systems barriers.

Objectives: As little is known about hearing screening practices at primary healthcare (PHC) clinics in South Africa, the study aimed to describe hearing-screening and record-keeping practices of nurses during typical immunisation sessions at PHC clinics in Gauteng, South Africa. Methods: Data were obtained through observations (N2=80) and questionnaires (N1=20) which were then cross-checked with retrospective information collected from the Road-to-Health Charts and City of Johannesburg Child Health Services Blue Cards of children observed during typical immunisation sessions. Results: A key finding of this study was that PHC nurses who participated in this study do not adhere to the hearing-screening record-keeping practices as outlined by the national Department of Health. Conclusions: Poor record-keeping practices hinder the efficacy of hearing-screening programmes. Accurate record keeping is important in order to document outcomes which can be used to evaluate service delivery and the efficacy of hearing-screening programmes.

The expectation was that 62 potentially creative adolescents would exhibit attitudes that were more positive toward their school experiences in open school environments as compared with more traditional school settings. Attitudes were assessed by rating students' essays in which the adolescents described their educational experiences. The results suggested that potentially creative adolescents generally have positive attitudes toward their school experiences whether in open or traditional settings. Attitudes do not appear to be more positive in open school environments.

Teachers participate in-service trainings in order to contribute their vocational development after completing graduate education and appointed as a teacher. The positive attitudes of teachers about participating in-service trainings increase the expectations about the teaching activities in their classrooms. In addition, The participation levels of teachers and the quality of in-service training activities may have a significant role on boosting teacher’s attitudes on attendance to in-service trainings. Based on this principle aim, in this research, the answers to these questions of teachers’ working in pre-primary, primary, secondary and high schools in Amasya, Tokat, Samsun and Çorum cities were sought in this study:  what are the attitudes of the teachers in participating the in-service trainings? Do the attitudes of the teachers differ significantly based on the factors of gender, professional experience, the city where they work, or their branch?  And is there any interconnection between the attitude scores of the teachers participating in the in-service trainings and their ages and years of seniority? 4) What are the expectations of the teachers about improving the effectiveness of the in-service trainings? Since this research tries to define the existing situation, the descriptive survey model was used in this research. N=37.028 teachers are the population of this research. In the research, which used a stratified cluster sampling method, n=961 teachers’ data were collected. The data of the research were collected by using the “Attitude Scale on In-Service Training (ASIST)”, which was in likert-form, and developed by Çelen, Kösterelioğlu and Akın Kösterelioğlu (2016). According to the findings, a statistically significant difference could not be found among the attitude scores of the teachers who work in four different provinces regarding participation in in-service training activities in terms of the gender, marital status and the number of the children they have. In the attitude scores of teachers, a significant difference was seen only in branch variable in favour of pre-primary teachers. Furthermore, whether the subject of the training to be given meets the needs of the education and trainings in the school, whether the in-service trainings address the teachers’ vocational and social interests; and the time they are organised and by whom they are given can be defined factors which can affect the participation levels of teachers and indirectly the attitudes regarding them.

Background: The implementation of the Mother-Baby Friendly Initiative (MBFI) strategy demonstrated its capabilities to improve global children’s health and maternal survival. However, its implementation in primary healthcare (PHC) facilities remains a challenge as many nurses are reluctant to adopt it for the improvement of child and maternal healthcare services in their respective clinics. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to determine the attitudes of nurses towards the implementation of the MBFI in selected PHC facilities in the Makhuduthamaga Municipality, Limpopo province.Method: This study used a quantitative, descriptive design, and all respondents were conveniently sampled. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. One-hundred and seventy-seven questionnaires were distributed, and 153 nurses responded and completed the questionnaire. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23 was used to analyse data. Results: Results show that the majority of nurses (professional nurses [PNs] = 65, 78%; enrolled nurses [ENs] = 18, 72%; enrolled nursing auxiliaries [ENAs] = 23, 51%) had a positive attitude towards the MBFI strategy implementation as they agreed that it increased breastfeeding rates. Most PNs (n = 58, 70%) and ENs (n = 15, 60%) showed positive attitudes towards exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) as they agreed that it was the ideal feeding option for any child, and most ENAs (n = 38, 84%) showed a negative attitude as they disagreed that EBF was the ideal feeding option for any child. Conclusion: In this study, most PNs and ENs had a positive attitude in all the aspects that determined their attitudes towards MBFI strategy implementation. A concern is the fact that most ENAs showed negative attitudes in almost all the statements that were in line with the principles of MBFI, as they disagreed in most aspects. Therefore, this study recommends that on-going orientation and trainings should be offered to all nurses including ENAs to equip them with information that can assist in changing their attitudes towards MBFI implementation in PHC facilities.

The author addresses what he sees as the paradoxical or inconsistent posture of rehabilitation educators and administrators who pay lip service to the central role of job placement in the rehabilitation process but fail to provide sufficient training or effective administrative support systems to ensure that clients receive high quality placement assistance. The author suggests that some may see job placement as “academically tainted and professionally unseemly,” The author plays “devil's advocate” by suggesting that those who hold such views would need to support their position by accepting one of four proposition: 1) Work is not important. 2) Clients of rehabilitation agencies do not need special job placement assistance. 3) Agencies have been successful in job placement and should redirect their allention elsewhere. 4) Counselor education programs and in-service training efforts have equipped practicing rehabilitation counsellors with all requisite skills and knowledge to do effective placement. The author then disputes each proposition drawing from available evidence and concludes by arguing for more concerted and systematic attention to job placement as a professional practice and a vital service to clients.
