Boredom in online English language classes: Mediating variables and coping strategies

Although boredom has been the subject of increasing scrutiny in second language (L2) learning recently, very little is known about how this emotion can affect teachers and students involved in Covid-19 prompted online English education. To address this gap, through maximum variation sampling, this qualitative study surveyed the opinions of 34 teachers and 256 students from universities across Iran to find out which class mode (online versus physical classes) and course type (content-based versus skills-based courses) were more boring, and what – if any – coping strategies these individuals used to get over boredom. The majority of teachers and students deemed online classes more boring than traditional, in-person classes. While teachers regarded skills-based and content-based courses as equally boring, most students believed that content-based online courses were more boredom-inducing due to their lecture-type nature. Moreover, whereas the teachers had a variety of useful coping strategies in their toolbox, an alarming number of students reported either not knowing how to deal with boredom or resorting to debilitative strategies, such as playing games or leaving class altogether when boredom reached an unbearable level. The findings are discussed in light of existing evidence from boredom and personality research, and practical suggestions are made.

To address the challenge of identifying an effective English language teaching pedagogy, this study explored the Grade 10 teachers (n=50) and students’ (n=2,221) beliefs of effective language teaching methods and the teachers’ classroom practices. It further investigated the convergence and divergence of the teachers’ and students’ beliefs and the teachers’ practices along with the pedagogic parameters of practicality and particularity. Using the descriptive quantitative design, the findings revealed the convergence of responses between (a) teachers’ and students’ beliefs of effective language methods, and (b) teachers’ beliefs and their practices. Analysis of responses also revealed the pedagogic parameters of practicality and particularity in the conduct of their English language classes. Teachers continually engage in the cycle of personal assessment to increase their autonomy in formulating enlightened choices responsive to the students’ needs. It is imperative that English teachers be engaged in programs that support their awareness of local exigencies to strengthen their belief systems on post-method pedagogy.

The main purpose of this chapter is to determine using the lean method in foreign language teaching. The lean method is new in educational systems, but it is used in different spheres of industries all over the world. This chapter shows the history, its implementation, experiments, and how it can be used and developed further. Lean in education will create a clear understanding of its importance on lean process and increase the motivations of administrations, teachers, and students.

This article builds up on an action research which was carried out mainly with two major purposes: to investigate learner perceptions and attitudes in the use of ICTs in English language classes; and to examine the role of ICTs in promoting the learner independence and motivation. The population of the study consisted of all the students from the Department of English Education, Central Department of Education, Kirtipur. The area was purposively selected; we have been teaching in the same place for seven years. The participants were 37 students who were also purposively selected. Among them, only 15 students were invited to a focused group discussion (FGD). However, all the students participated in the intervention for the whole semester. The intervention was implemented during the instruction. The major ICT tools adopted for the study were: web sites, e-mails and multimedia. We administered three progress tests to assess their progress in terms of independence and motivation. The findings of this research show that the learners are well motivated and positive in the use of ICTs in language teaching.

Abstract Online learning is becoming a commonplace in different settings starting from elementary, secondary and higher levels of education. Different educational institutions use different communication tools to promote learning because the expansive nature of the Internet and the accessibility of technology have generated a surge in the demand for web-based teaching and learning across the nations (Chaney, 2010). The online teaching and learning have become a necessity for education around the globe during COVID 19-pandemic. There are several challenges which are faced during online classes because the students must have strong self-motivation skills and be very disciplined to achieve the desired learning results. This paper presents and analyzes the data on the benefits and challenges of online teaching at South East European University (SEEU) during COVID 19 pandemic. The participants of the study are students of the BA level majoring in English Language and Literature and German Language and Literature at SEEU in Tetovo, North Macedonia. To answer the research questions, we have used a student questionnaire, interviews, and student reflection papers written during the online courses. Overall, the research indicates that benefits of online coursework outweigh the challenges that students face during the online classes. From a safety perspective, this study emphasizes the need to consider the impact of online teaching on student motivation and the paper raises important questions about how to best support students enrolled in online courses. Further research is needed in order to better evaluate the benefits, challenges, and useful strategies of successful students enrolled in online courses.

Under China’s market economy, English language learning has been adopted as a strategy to promote the nation’s economic competitiveness in a global economy. This development reflects a discourse of linguistic instrumentalism. Based upon individual interviews of 24 English teachers in Zhejiang Province, China, the study reveals that teachers question the assumptions of linguistic instrumentalism, the gatekeeper role of English, the impact of the increasing dominance of English on Chinese language, and their students’ internalization of the belief in the superiority of Anglo culture. In addition, the study suggests that as a result of globalization, the delivery of English education in China has experienced unprecedented marketization and privatization. Despite increases in their salaries, teachers still live in poor conditions. Under the fee-paying principle, parents expect teachers to provide the best service to their children, and as such the relations between teachers and students have become like those between businesses and clients. It seems evident that teaching has been devalued and commodified in the age of market economy.

Abstract: In this 21st century era therm of Mobile Assisted Language Learning becomes a part of teaching and learning activity in English Education. Mobile Assisted Language learning offers various benefits to both teachers and students. Though, it offers various benefits, in practice it is still debatable thing. Thus, this research was tried to investigate students’ perception towards the implementation of MALL in their learning process. The research was taken at Senior High School in SMAN 1 Dukupuntang. This current study use descriptive qualitative method, and the data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and interview to get the relevant data. The present research shows that students tend to have good perception on the implementation of MALL in English Learning. In using MALL, students use several applications and software to help them study about English Language both inside and outside the classroom. By using MALL, students feel that it was more enjoyable and able to get the information quickly. This research also shows the challenges that faced by the students when they use MALL in English Learning activity. In conclusion, this research shows that students’ have positive perception towards MALL in English Learning.

It has been reported that English as second language (ESL) teachers are not well-trained to teach slow learners in inclusive education. The aim of this study is to explore the challenges that Malaysian English language teachers faced when teaching slow learners in the inclusive educational program as well as to determine their coping strategies. The present study employed a qualitative research method with case study design through face-to-face interviews with three English language teachers from three secondary schools in Malaysia. Five major themes were found through thematic analysis: external factors and internal factors represented the challenges that Malaysian teachers faced when teaching slow learners in the inclusive education, while teaching resources, remedial activities and teachers’ skills represented the coping strategies used by the English language teachers.

The purpose of this research was to investigate how the integration of e-learning in the teaching of English Language could benefit teachers and students at the high school level. This study was done using mixed methods in the form of an exploratory sequential action research where an exploration of teachers' experiences who used e-learning strategies in the teaching of English Language classes was observed and assessed to identify successes and challenges. A total of 15 teachers were trained to use e-learning approaches to improve the teaching and learning process and provided with a training manual after revising the literature relating to the problem. This was accomplished in the study, and an evaluation of the impact was conducted. The findings revealed that the teachers commenced integrating the technologies in their classes and that they are utilizing the strategies that they were exposed to in the training process.

In order to eliminate the spread of the Corona Virus, the students have been being required to study from homes either synchronously or asynchronously. It is commonly known asan online class. It has been being done to cut the spread of theCOVID-19 virus. This new teaching approach needs EFL students to adjust their way of learning. Also, the online class creates some challenges, such as limited interaction, low motivation, internet connection issues, etc) for EFL learners in their learning process because teachers and students have less interaction. This situation is called a silence phenomenon. Due to this was a new type of issue in EFL teaching and less investigated research, the researchers conducted the study to investigate the factors and solutions of the silencing phenomenon faced by EFL students during an online class. This study employed a case study research method.The subjects of this studywere tenstudents of English Language EducationDepartment students, 2017 academicyear at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). The researcher collected thedata through the interview technique.The interview was applied, so the researchers obtained rich and in-depth data. The finding of this studyshowed that students’active participation during online classes was very low.That low participation was caused by several aspects: individual, teacher,cultural, technological, and domestic. The students could implement various ways to minimize the students’ reticence in the online class. This research hopefully provides different views to make teachers' online classes fun and interesting, so English learning can obtain optimal outcomes.
