The ability of health-care professionals to understand the lived experiences of their patients has become increasingly important but has been a difficult topic to investigate empirically because it involves two distinctive research strands: interpretative phenomenological analysis and patient–provider communication. While interpretative phenomenological analysis focuses on experiences and illness narratives of patients, but not on therapist’s understanding of those, patient–provider communication surveys focus primarily on effective forms of communication without addressing the actual illness experiences of patients. There is a need for empirical research that combines both strands to investigate not only the experiences of patients but also whether professionals are able to understand these. This study combined both strands by means of a novel research method called the Imitation Game (combined with other qualitative methods). This sociological method was developed to investigate what different social groups know of each other’s lifeworld. It focused on the important domain of eating disorder treatment to investigate whether therapists were able to understand the experiences of their patients and vice versa. This study provides insights into the domains in which therapists and patients were able to develop insights into each other’s experiential knowledge (and where they had difficulties in doing so). The findings also implicate the high potential of the Imitation Game as an interdisciplinary research method. We propose that the Imitation Game may be particularly valuable as a ‘can opener’ that enables the development of in-depth, qualitative insights into the substantive themes that matter in the lifeworlds of patients and therapists.

Abstract Background People living with dementia at home are a group who are at increased risk of malnutrition. Health care professionals and home care workers, are ideally placed to support nutritional care in this vulnerable group. Yet, few, if any studies, have captured the experiences of these workers in respect of treating and managing nutritional issues. This interpretative phenomenological study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of the nutritional care of people living with dementia at home from the perspectives of health care professionals and home care workers. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted between December 2017 and March 2018, and supplemented with the use of a vignette outlining a scenario of a husband caring for his wife with dementia. Health care professionals and home care workers were purposively recruited from local care providers in the south west of England, who had experience of working with people with dementia. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach was used throughout. Results Seven participants took part including two home care workers, a general practitioner, dietitian, occupational therapist, nurse and social worker. The time in their professions ranged from 3 to 15 years (mean = 8.9 years). Following analysis, four superordinate themes were identified: ‘responsibility to care’, ‘practice restrained by policy’, ‘in it together’, and ‘improving nutritional care’. This group of health care professionals and home care workers recognised the importance of improving nutritional care for people living with dementia at home, and felt a responsibility for it. However they felt that they were restricted by time and/or knowledge. The importance of supporting the family carer and working collaboratively was highlighted. Conclusions Health care professionals and home care workers require further training to better equip them to provide nutritional care for people living with dementia at home. Models of care may also need to be adapted to enable a more flexible and tailored approach to incorporate nutritional care. Future work in this area should focus on how health care professionals and home care workers can be better equipped to screen for malnutrition, and support changes to nutritional intake to mitigate malnutrition risk.

This article aims to explore gay sexual orientation which is clashed with Islam and Psychology. In Islamic teachings, gay behavior that refers to acts of liwat} is an act that is forbidden. Even the death penalty is a threat to people who have a sexual orientation to the same sex. Based on this matter, this paper explores the case, where religious translations appear to meet irreconcilable needs, namely between gay and Islam. The research method used in this paper is qualitative with an approach Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The formal object used is the lens of the Vaillant version of the self-defense mechanisms theory. The results found in this study show that gays admit that their sexual orientation is a sin. They are aware of this as a whole, but none of the subjects of this study wish to leave Islam. The methods of gay in reconciling the conflict are: First, Islam is seen as a forgiving religion: Secondly, it is sinful to have sex outside marriage either homo or hetero and Third, sexual orientation is considered as the nature of God.

To explore patients’ existential challenges when living with chronic pain or multiple sclerosis, 23 semistructured patient interviews were conducted together with an interpretative, phenomenological analysis inspired by Søren Kierkegaard. Patients experienced their illness as a “stroke of fate” resulting in despair and a profound struggle to find out, who they were, and how they could relate to themselves in their new life-situation. Becoming oneself was experienced as a long-term existential process realized by synthesizing the existential poles of necessities and possibilities through “the other,” such as relationships, nature, spirituality, or God. The different ways to respond to the existential challenges were identified as subjective choices of aesthetic, ethic, and religious life-spheres. The Kierkegaardian relational self and the life-spheres as diverse possibilities are valuable for understanding patients’ existential challenges and the complicated process of finding a new way to relate to oneself when life is fundamentally transformed by illness. To resolve the existential struggles, it seems essential to take a subjective stand in life and have a relationship to something bigger than oneself. The findings can inform clinical practice and inspire health care professionals to identify patients who would welcome a dialogue about illness-related existential struggles for the benefit of their health.

The research aimed at examining ways by which Madurese women could achieve satisfaction in early marriage. Its used a qualitative research method with an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). To understand the meaning of one’s experience by looking for themes from available data, IPA rested on three pillars, namely phenomenology, hermeneutics, and idiography. The researchers used semi-structured interviews to collect data and purposive homogeneous sampling. The participants involved were three married women under 18 years old who were living in Madura. The results of the research show that the three women are satisfied with their marriage. The satisfaction of their marriage can be seen from taking care of each other when sick, giving her enough money, and always happy with her husband, not far apart. Furthermore, Madurese women dissatisfaction in her marriage can be seen from anger if she is not given money and is not helped in doing household.

Disturbed with the disparity in the employment distribution in the civil service, the Nigerian government enacted the Federal Character Policy to ensure equality in employment distribution in the country’s civil service. Unfortunately, the policy appears to be unsuccessful in its implementation because disparity still characterizes employment distribution in the Nigerian civil service. This has led to the rivalry, disharmony, and discontent in the service. This paper explores measure aimed at ensuring implementation of the Federal Character Policy in the Nigerian civil service employment distribution. In order to meet the objective of the paper qualitative research method adopted while purposive sampling used in selecting the informants interviewed while the relevant document was equally analyzed. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was adopted for data analysis. The paper found that the implementation of the policy can be ensured with committed leadership, orientation and training. The paper provided valuable strategies that will ensure the implementation of the Federal Character Policy in the Nigerian civil service employment distribution and importantly it provided helpful insight for policies that are facing similar implementation setback

AbstractSeveral studies have recently illuminated the relationship between hearing loss and hospitalizations, but little is understood as to why hearing loss is associated with greater risk for hospitalizations. This study examines the role of patient–provider communication as the mechanism by which those with hearing loss are more likely to be hospitalized, using the self-reported data from 12,654 Medicare beneficiaries from the 2016 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Cost and Use File. Multivariable logistic regression was used to model the odds of any hospitalization in the past year and negative binomial regression to model the incident rate ratio of hospitalization based on number of hospitalizations in the past year. It was found that Medicare beneficiaries who experience impaired communication with their physician due to trouble hearing have greater odds of hospitalization and a higher rate of all hospitalization over a 1-year period. Understanding the complex relationship between hearing loss, patient–provider communication, and hospitalizations may provide health care professionals with a better rational to address not only hearing loss but also impaired communication in the care of an individual.

This article introduces research in open awareness (OA). The qualitative research method of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was utilised to investigate the characteristic phenomena that are associated with the state and perspective of OA, including its effects in terms of stress resilience, burnout prevention and psychological well-being. The research project involved exploring the experiences of people with high stress and burnout levels who practiced the OA technique for 24 days. The overall outcome of this research suggests that the OA technique may promote resilience to stress, while helping to improve well-being and performance, which in turn may support the prevention and treatment of burnout. This conclusion is supported by current literature, covering how distress and the onset of burnout may be associated with chronic tunnel awareness, which the OA technique was found to counteract. Two distinct areas of future research are proposed involving OA with implications for social renewal.
