In this study, the numerical investigation of free dynamic response of a rigid, symmetric airfoil having two coupled degrees of freedom is performed. The airfoil is excited using two different mechanisms. Firstly, a mechanical excitation scenario is simulated using initial conditions for both the degrees of freedom. Dynamic airfoil response in terms of amplitudes of oscillation is recorded under no flow as well as uniform upstream flow conditions. In the second scenario, an upstream flow perturbation is introduced in the form of a gust superimposed on the otherwise uniform in-flow. Transient energy amplification behavior of the airfoil under both scenarios is monitored. The findings are presented in terms of dimensionless aerodynamic coefficients, oscillations amplitudes, and total energy of the airfoil. Detailed comparisons of the experimental data and results obtained using analytical models are developed and discussed using a very simple simulation methodology.

This paper describes the results of a study into the dynamic behavior of a magnetic bearing system. The research focuses attention on the influence of nonlinearities on the forced response of a two-degree-of-freedom rotating mass suspended by magnetic bearings and subject to rotating unbalance and feedback control. Geometric coupling between the degrees of freedom leads to a pair of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are then solved using both numerical simulation and approximate analytical techniques. The system exhibits a variety of interesting and somewhat unexpected phenomena including various amplitude driven bifurcational events, sensitivity to initial conditions, and the complete loss of stability associated with the escape from the potential well in which the system can be thought to be oscillating. An approximate criterion to avoid this last possibility is developed based on concepts of limiting the response of the system. The present paper may be considered as an extension to an earlier study by the same authors, which described the practical context of the work, free vibration, control aspects, and derivation of the mathematical model.

A quasi-three-dimensional hydrodynamic model is presented to simulate shallow water phenomena. The method is based on a finite-volume approach designed to solve shallow water equations in the time domain. The nonlinearities of the governing equations are considered. The methodology can be used to compute green water effects on a variety of platforms with six-degrees-of-freedom motions. Different boundary and initial conditions can be applied for multiple types of moving platforms, like a ship's deck, tanks, etc. Comparisons with experimental data are discussed. The shallow water model has been integrated with the Large Amplitude Motions Program to compute the effects of green water flow over decks within a time-domain simulation of ship motions in waves. Results associated to this implementation are presented.

The dynamics and hydrodynamics of ship capsizing include strong nonlinearities, transient effects, and physical phenomena that have not been fully identified or studied. This paper presents a study of some of the various mechanisms associated with this extreme behavior. A quasi-nonlinear three degree of freedom numerical model is employed to examine the effects of initial conditions on the ultimate state of a box barge model. The numerical results are then used to provide structure and understanding to otherwise seemingly inconsistent and ambiguous experiments.

Context. Understanding the origin of the initial mass function (IMF) of stars is a major problem for the star formation process and beyond. Aim. We investigate the dependence of the peak of the IMF on the physics of the so-called first Larson core, which corresponds to the point where the dust becomes opaque to its own radiation. Methods. We performed numerical simulations of collapsing clouds of 1000 M⊙ for various gas equations of state (eos), paying great attention to the numerical resolution and convergence. The initial conditions of these numerical experiments are varied in the companion paper. We also develop analytical models that we compare to our numerical results. Results. When an isothermal eos is used, we show that the peak of the IMF shifts to lower masses with improved numerical resolution. When an adiabatic eos is employed, numerical convergence is obtained. The peak position varies with the eos, and using an analytical model to infer the mass of the first Larson core, we find that the peak position is about ten times its value. By analyzing the stability of nonlinear density fluctuations in the vicinity of a point mass and then summing over a reasonable density distribution, we find that tidal forces exert a strong stabilizing effect and likely lead to a preferential mass several times higher than that of the first Larson core. Conclusions. We propose that in a sufficiently massive and cold cloud, the peak of the IMF is determined by the thermodynamics of the high-density adiabatic gas as well as the stabilizing influence of tidal forces. The resulting characteristic mass is about ten times the mass of the first Larson core, which altogether leads to a few tenths of solar masses. Since these processes are not related to the large-scale physical conditions and to the environment, our results suggest a possible explanation for the apparent universality of the peak of the IMF.

A six-degree-of-freedom non-linear model is developed using Lagrange’s equation. The model is used to estimate transient fan-stage dynamic response during a fan-blade-out event in a turbo fan engine. The coupled degrees of freedom in the model include the fan whirl in the fan plane, the torsional response of the fan and low-pressure turbines (LPTs) about the engine centerline, the radial position of the released blade fragment, and the angular rotation of the trailing blade from its free state due to acceleration of the released blade. The released blade is assumed to slide radially outward along the trailing blade without friction. The external loading applied to the system includes fan imbalance, the remaining fan blades machining away the rub strip, rubbing of the blades with the fan case, and slowly-varying torques on the low pressure (LP) spool as engine performance degrades. The machining of the abradable imparts tangential loading on the fan blades as momentum is transferred to the liberated rub strip material. After application of the initial conditions including angular positions, angular velocities, released blade fragment position, and torsional wind-up, the governing equations are integrated forward in time from the instant the blade fragment is released. A reasonable match to test data is shown. Parameters affecting the fan-system response are varied to study the impact on fan peak lateral whirl amplitude, peak LP shaft torque, and peak loading on the trailing blade. It is found that the rub strip and mass eccentricity have the strongest influence on the LP shaft torsional loading. It is found that mass eccentricity has the largest influence on peak fan whirl. It is also found that released blade mass and attachment stiffness have the largest influence on the trailing blade loading.

Noise rejection, handling the difficulties coming from the mathematical representation of the system under investigation and alleviation of structural or unstructural uncertainties constitute prime challenges that are frequently encountered in the practice of systems and control engineering. Designing a controller has primarily the aim of achieving the tracking precision as well as a degree of robustness against the difficulties stated. From this point of view, variable structure systems theory offer well formulated solutions to such ill-posed problems containing uncertainty and imprecision. In this paper, a simple controller structure is discussed. The architecture is known as Adaptive Linear Element (ADALINE) in the framework of neural computing. The parameters of the controller evolve dynamically in time such that a sliding motion is obtained. The inner sliding motion concerns the establishment of a sliding mode in controller parameters, which aims to minimize the error on the controller outputs. The outer sliding motion is designed for the plant. The algorithm discussed drives the error on the output of the controller toward zero learning error level, and the state tracking error vector of the plant is driven toward the origin of the phase space simultaneously. The paper gives the analysis of the equivalence between the two sliding motions and demonstrates the performance of the algorithm on a three degrees of freedom, anthropoid robotic manipulator. In order to clarify the performance of the scheme, together with the dynamic complexity of the plant, the adverse effects of observation noise and nonzero initial conditions are studied. Abstract Aeroelastic systems have nonlinearities that provide a wide variety of complex dynamic behaviors. Nonlinear effects can be avoided in practical applications, as in instability suppression or desired, for instance, in the energy harvesting design. In the technical literature, there are surveys on nonlinear aeroelastic systems and the different manners they manifest. More recently, the bistable spring effect has been studied as an acceptable nonlinear behavior applied to mechanical vibration problems. The application of the bistable spring effect to aeroelastic problems is still not explored thoroughly. This paper contributes to analyzing the nonlinear dynamics of a typical airfoil section mounted on bistable spring support at plunging motion. The equations of motion are based on the typical aeroelastic section model with three degrees-of-freedom. Moreover, a hardening nonlinearity in pitch is also considered. A preliminary analysis of the bistable spring geometry’s influence in its restoring force and the elastic potential energy is performed. The response of the system is investigated for a set of geometrical configurations. It is possible to identify post-flutter motion regions, the so-called intrawell, and interwell. Results reveal that the transition between intrawell to interwell regions occurs smoothly, depending on the initial conditions. The bistable effect on the aeroelastic system can be advantageous in energy extraction problems due to the jump in oscillation amplitudes. Furthermore, the hardening effect in pitching motion reduces the limit cycle oscillation amplitudes and also delays the occurrence of the snap-through.

Abstract Several incompatibilities exist between analytical models and experimentally obtained data for many systems. In particular finite element analysis (FEA) modeling often produces analytical modal data that does not agree with measured modal data from experimental modal analysis (EMA). These two methods account for the majority of activity in vibration modeling used in industry. The existence of these discrepancies has spanned the discipline of model updating as summarized in the review articles by Inman (1990), Imregun (1991), and Friswell (1995). In this situation the analytical model is characterized by a large number of degrees of freedom (and hence modes), ad hoc damping mechanisms and real eigenvectors (mode shapes). The FEM model produces a mass, damping and stiffness matrix which is numerically solved for modal data consisting of natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Common practice is to compare this analytically generated modal data with natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios obtained from EMA. The EMA data is characterized by a small number of modes, incomplete and complex mode shapes and non proportional damping. It is very common in practice for this experimentally obtained modal data to be in minor disagreement with the analytically derived modal data. The point of view taken is that the analytical model is in error and must be refined or corrected based on experimented data. The approach proposed here is to use the results of inverse eigenvalue problems to develop methods for model updating for damped systems. The inverse problem has been addressed by Lancaster and Maroulas (1987), Starek and Inman (1992,1993,1994,1997) and is summarized for undamped systems in the text by Gladwell (1986). There are many sophisticated model updating methods available. The purpose of this paper is to introduce using inverse eigenvalues calculated as a possible approach to solving the model updating problem. The approach is new and as such many of the practical and important issues of noise, incomplete data, etc. are not yet resolved. Hence, the method introduced here is only useful for low order lumped parameter models of the type used for machines rather than structures. In particular, it will be assumed that the entries and geometry of the lumped components is also known.

ABSTRACT The transmission of vibrations in motorcycles and their perception by the passengers are fundamental in comfort analysis. Tire nonuniformities can generate self-excitations at the rotational frequency of the wheel and contribute to the ride vibration environment. In this work a multi-body motorcycle model is built to evaluate the ride comfort with respect to tire nonuniformities. The aim is to obtain a multi–degrees-of-freedom dynamic model that includes both the contributions of the motorcycle and tire–wheel assembly structures. This representation allows the tire nonuniformities to predict the vertical force variations on the motorcycle and can be used through a root mean square acceleration evaluation for ride comfort analysis. The motorcycle model proposed is a 10-degrees-of-freedom system, where each tire–wheel is a 4-degrees-of-freedom model. The tire–wheel assemblies include two types of nonuniformities: lumped mass imbalance and radial run-out. Simulations of analytical models are compared with experimental tests.

We study the interplay among extrema of axion potentials, Kahler moduli stabilization and the swampland criteria. We argue that moving away from the minima of nonperturbatively generated axion potentials can lead to a runaway behavior of moduli that govern the couplings in the effective field theory. The proper inclusion of these degrees of freedom resolves the conflict between periodic axion potentials and the gradient de Sitter criterion, without the need to invoke the refined de Sitter criterion. We investigate the possibility of including this runaway direction as a model of quintessence that satisfies the swampland criteria. Using a single nonperturbative effect, the maximum along the axion direction provides such a runaway direction, which is unstable in the axion directions, sensitive to initial conditions and too steep to allow for a Hubble time of expansion without violating the field excursion criterion. Adding a second nonperturbative effect generates a saddle point in the potential satisfying the refined de Sitter criterion, which solves the steepness problem and improves the initial conditions problem although some fine-tuning remains required.
