Colour gamut size and shape influence colour preference

Two psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of colour gamut size and shape on colour preference. In the first, two side-by-side booths were designed to resemble a retail setting with clothing; in the second, a single booth was designed to resemble a restaurant setting, but also included a mirror to permit the observer's evaluation of skin tone. These settings were illuminated with two sets of sources, where, compared to a fixed reference, one set created modest chroma enhancement and the other set created greater increases in object chroma. Within each set, gamut shape varied, meaning different hues were saturated, even though, on average, the spectra created the same average increase in chroma. When objects were unfamiliar, as with the fabrics, all chroma-enhancing spectra were preferred to the fixed reference regardless of the gamut shapes. When familiar objects were present, such as food, observers were more discerning about changes in chroma and hue. We conclude that a graphic of gamut shape is an important adjunct to average measures of colour fidelity and gamut.

The genus Epicadinus Simon, 1895 can easily be distinguished from the other Neotropical Stephanopines by their abundant and robust setiferous tubercles, topped by elongated macrosetae, which cover most of the tegument. Additionally, the genus can be recognized by a pair of conical ocular mounds above the ALE, the anterior eye row very recurved, posterior one slightly procurved; carapace flattened and without tubercles, and opisthosoma with three conical projections (“tubercles”) of variable size and shape. This work is a taxonomic review of the 12 valid species of Epicadinus as listed in version 19 of the World Spider Catalogue (2018), whose hitherto known distribution included few records from Brazil, French Guiana, Bolivia and Peru, and only one from Mexico. Four valid species are recognized: Epicadinus biocellatus Mello-Leitão, 1929; E. trispinosus (Taczanowski, 1872) [with two junior synonyms E. trifidus (Pickard-Cambridge, 1893) syn. nov. and E. cornutus (Taczanowski, 1872) syn. nov.]; E. spinipes (Blackwall, 1862) [with two junior synonyms E. albimaculatus Mello-Leitão, 1929 syn. nov. and E. gavensis Soares, 1946 syn. nov]; and E. villosus [with two junior synonyms E. helenae Piza, 1936 syn. nov. and E. marmoratus Mello-Leitão, 1947 syn. nov.]. Epicadinus polyophthalmus Mello-Leitão, 1929 and Epicadinus tuberculatus Petrunkevitch, 1910 are transferred to Epicadus. Epicadus polyophthalmus (Mello-Leitão, 1929) comb. nov. is considered a nomen dubium. Epicadus tuberculatus (Petrunkevitch, 1910) comb. nov. is a senior synonym of Epicadus pustulosus (Mello-Leitão, 1929) syn. nov.

In some Computer Vision applications there is the need for grouping, in one or more clusters, only a part of the whole dataset. This happens, for example, when samples of interest for the application at hand are present together with several noisy samples. In this paper we present a graph-based algorithm for cluster detection that is particularly suited for detecting clusters of any size and shape, without the need of specifying either the actual number of clusters or the other parameters. The algorithm has been tested on data coming from two different computer vision applications. A comparison with other four state-of-the-art graph-based algorithms was also provided, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

AbstractThis paper discusses the Aristotelian notions of matter and form as they are treated in the philosophy of Leibniz. The discussion is divided into three parts, corresponding to three periods in Leibniz's development. In the earliest period, as exemplified in a 1669 letter to his former mentor Jakob Thomasius, Leibniz argues that matter and form can be given straightforward interpretations in terms of size and shape, basic categories in the new mechanical philosophy. In Leibniz's middle years, on the other hand, as exemplified in the Discourse on Metaphysics and the correspondence with Arnauld, Leibniz seems to hold a more orthodox Aristotelian view of matter and form as the constituents of the corporeal substances that ground the reality of the physical world. In Leibniz's latest years, as discussed in the letters with Des Bosses, matter and form enter once again in connection with the vinculum substantiale, the substantial bond that is supposed to bind monads together to form corporeal substances.

A broadband six-way out-of-phase substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) power divider was designed, analyzed, and fabricated for low loss and out of phase dividing applications. The SIW technology was used to realize the power divider; where it consists of a central dual-disc probe connected with coaxial outer-conductor impedance matching transformer and six SIW-to-microstrip transitions as output probes. Three of the SIW-to-microstrip transitions are located at the top plane, whereas the other three are at the bottom plane of the power divider to achieve the out-of-phase dividing functioning. These transitions are all the same in size and shape for symmetry reason. Good transmissions from coaxial input port to six-way SIW power divider were also achieved. There is a reasonable agreement between measured and simulated results.

The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in appreciation for LED-based white-light sources between Dutch and Chinese people, when used for the illumination of three applications: fresh food, packaging material and skin tone. Furthermore, the contribution of the CIE special and general colour rendering indices ( Ri and Ra), a colour gamut measure ( Ga), and chroma changes for specific test-colour samples to perceived attractiveness was investigated. Thirty-four Dutch and 36 Chinese people assessed the attractiveness of the object appearance, with paired comparison experiments, for seven light sources at two CCT settings, 3000 K (Dutch and Chinese) and 4000 K (Chinese only), and a range of Ra and Ga values. It was found that for illuminating fresh food and packaging material, most Dutch and Chinese participants preferred light settings with an increased colour gamut. In contrast to colour rendering indices, the chroma change for the strong red test colour sample could be used to predict object attractiveness, but the established equations were different per application and culture. There was no clear relation between objective measures and skin tone preference for the Dutch study. Finally, Chinese participants did not like an increase in red saturation at 3000 K, but they allowed an increase at 4000 K.

The tomato/potato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli (Sulc) (Hemiptera Triozidae) is found throughout most of New Zealand along with a range of native and other introduced psyllids all belonging to the superfamily Psylloidea The Psylloidea contains six families of which four are recorded from New Zealand (Psyllidae Calophyidae Homotomidae and Triozidae) Species belonging to Triozidae have trifurcate branching on the basal vein of the forewing in contrast to the other psyllid families in New Zealand which have bifurcate branching Bactericera cockerelli can be distinguished from other Triozidae species by the number of inner apical spurs on the tibiae of the hind legs (2) size and shape of the cubital cell in the forewing (short and compact) absence of long setae on vertex and dorsal thoracic surfaces and the lack of well developed genal cones Illustrations of these characters can be seen on insectwatchcom Usually body markings in insects are not suitable for identification purposes since these are likely to vary However the very distinct markings (white marginal and inner patch) on the vertex (dorsal surface of head) of B cockerelli seem stable and are a very useful characteristic for distinguishing this species from other psyllids in New Zealand
