Instructional Strategies for Improving Training System Effectiveness

Advanced simulators and other training systems have been designed to replicate as realistically as possible various operational systems and environments. The rationale for this particular design goal is to attain sufficient fidelity for maximum training transfer to the real world. Yet, effective training may not only depend on attaining adequate fidelity, but also upon how a given training system is used to achieve specific learning outcomes. This paper identifies some of the salient problems with training system design and use, and discusses possible solutions for improving their training value based on incorporating instructional support capabilities and using prescriptive instructional methods.

AbstractAugmented reality (AR) is a unique, hands-on tool to deliver information. However, its educational value has been mainly demonstrated empirically so far. In this paper, we present a modeling approach to provide users with mastery of a skill, using AR learning content to implement an educational curriculum. We illustrate the potential of this approach by applying this to an important but pervasively misunderstood area of STEM learning, electrical circuitry. Unlike previous cognitive assessment models, we break down the area into microskills—the smallest segmentation of this knowledge—and concrete learning outcomes for each. This model empowers the user to perform a variety of tasks that are conducive to the acquisition of the skill. We also provide a classification of microskills and how to design them in an AR environment. Our results demonstrated that aligning the AR technology to specific learning objectives paves the way for high quality assessment, teaching, and learning.

Film has been widely used for management learning, mostly with a focus on the story rather than on the film experience. This study draws on arts-based learning literature, film studies and data from learning interactions, and develops a taxonomy of experiential learning with film as a specific art form and emotional medium. The taxonomy includes three elements: making a film experience, processing the experience and cultural aesthetic reflexivity. This study provides process steps and teaching strategies to help move management learners along in the process towards specific learning outcomes. It introduces a film analysis tool as a method that can be used to overcome aesthetic muteness when reflecting on the film experience. The acclaimed and contested TV series Game of Thrones serves as a point of reference, and examples feature the female leader Daenerys Targaryen. The approach is transferable across films and TV series to integrate knowing, experience and emotions and to use popular culture’s critical potential for management learning.

In this article, we present a taxonomy in Robot-Assisted Training; a growing body of research in Human–Robot Interaction which focuses on how robotic agents and devices can be used to enhance user’s performance during a cognitive or physical training task. Robot-Assisted Training systems have been successfully deployed to enhance the effects of a training session in various contexts, i.e., rehabilitation systems, educational environments, vocational settings, etc. The proposed taxonomy suggests a set of categories and parameters that can be used to characterize such systems, considering the current research trends and needs for the design, development and evaluation of Robot-Assisted Training systems. To this end, we review recent works and applications in Robot-Assisted Training systems, as well as related taxonomies in Human–Robot Interaction. The goal is to identify and discuss open challenges, highlighting the different aspects of a Robot-Assisted Training system, considering both robot perception and behavior control.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare the effect of the Y-trellis and vertical shoot position trellis (VSP) training systems on the physicochemical composition and aromatic profile of 'Sauvignon Blanc' (Vitis vinifera) wines in a high-altitude region of the state of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. The experiment was conducted during the 2015 vintage in a commercial vineyard located in the municipality of São Joaquim. The treatments consisted of the training systems: Y-trellis and VSP pruned in spur cordon. Sixty kilograms of grapes were harvested from each training system to make the wines, which were evaluated as to their chemical and phenolic composition and aromatic profile. There is no effect of the training system on the wine chemical variables pH, total acidity, color, and total polyphenols. The aromatic profile and phenolic composition of the wines are affected by the training systems, being related to the variables ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, 3-methyl-1-butanol, propanoic acid, and gallic acid in the Y-trellis, and to 1-hexanol, isovaleric acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, and catechin in VSP. The Y-trellis system can be an alternative for high-altitude regions of Southern Brazil.

In the context of modern educational conditions, it becomes actual to solve the problem of preparation of such teaching aids that would act as an integral tool of the pedagogical technology of effective training in power exercises. The aim of the article is to present the results of the analysis of modern requirements for the didactic projection of teaching aids, to justify the demand for their design and to present a project for the integrated use of didactic tools in the training of power exercises. The study used a method of theoretical analysis and generalization of scientific and methodological literature on the issues reflecting the state of the problem of the didactic facilities projection, the theoretical foundations of training motor activities, the problems of creating and using didactic means for teaching motor activities. To determine the efficiency of the traditional methods of teaching power exercises a pedagogical experiment was established. 34 girls and 47 boys participated in the experiment. The results which showed the quality of learning the orienting basis for motor actions were obtained by testing. Results of the study. The modern requirements of the theory of projecting teaching aids indicate the need for a comprehensive design and reflection of the components of the implemented didactic system in the teaching facilities, namely: the purpose of training, the content of training, the learning process itself and organizational forms of education. Projecting these elements in accordance with the requirements presented in the theory makes it possible to implement a pre-designed didactic system in practice. The analysis of the theoretical bases of teaching motor actions shows that the process of mastering knowledge of motor actions as an indicative basis for carrying out these actions is of primary importance for developing motor skills and abilities. The obtained results of power exercises training system according to the traditional method showed the following: 70.2% of young men and 84.3% of girls reached the first level of learning the orienting basis of motor actions in power training. Indicators of the second level of learning were extremely low: only 5% of boys and 18.7% of girls reached it. The project has been created for training motor activities using such didactic facilities as an electronic educational resource and instruction cards. Each facility has its own functions in providing the stages of the educational and cognitive cycle, the use of which is designed depending on the way the group of students are organized, the forms of the educational process organization.

The aim of this study was to evaluate phenology aspect, vigor, production and quality of ‘Eragil’ peach trees grown under different training and pruning systems. Evaluations were carried out during two seasons, 2015/16 and 2016/17. Fruit tree training and pruning systems ‘Open Center’ (3.5 × 5.0 m), ‘Ipsilon’ (1.5 × 5.0 m) and ‘Central Leader’ (0.8 × 5.0 m) were used. Phenology, vegetative growth (vigor) and yield were evaluated. ‘Central Leader’ plants showed a higher productivity and productive efficiency. ‘Open Center’ plants had a greater vigor and yield per plant, however had a lower yield by unit area. Plants with ‘Y’ shape were intermediates between ‘Open Center’ and ‘Central Leader’ in relation of the evaluated variables. ‘Central Leader’ training system can be used for peach orchards in order to increase yield and productivity indexes.

Abstract.The university is known for its complexity and continuous change. Junior faculty should be incorporated and adjusted to the university structure and functioning. In addition, they have to implement a set of teaching competencies to promote an effective process of teaching and learning, and the student achievement of specific learning outcomes. For this reason, this paper advocates the need to implement mentoring programs between senior and junior faculty as a process that involves learning, support and mutual enrichment. Thus, two mentoring projects developed at the University of Granada are described. It is shown to be effective in strengthening efforts towards faculty achieving goals and its well-being.Keywords: higher education, faculty, mentorship, teaching competenciesResumen.La institución universitaria se caracteriza por su complejidad y continuo cambio. El profesorado universitario junior ha de incorporarse y ajustarse a la estructura y funcionamiento de la universidad, a lo que se suma que ha de poner en práctica una serie de competencias docentes para favorecer un proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje eficaz y la consecución de determinados resultados de aprendizaje en el alumnado. Es por ello por lo que en el presente trabajo se defiende la necesidad de implementar programas de mentorizacion entre el profesorado senior y junior como un proceso que implica el aprendizaje, apoyo y enriquecimiento mutuo. En este sentido, se describen dos proyectos de mentorización desarrollados en la universidad de Granada. Se pone de manifiesto su eficacia para fortalecer los esfuerzos dirigidos hacia la consecución de una meta y el bienestar del profesorado.Palabras clave: educación superior, profesorado, mentorización, competencias docentes
