This article focuses on an approach based on the Taguchi method with grey relational analysis for optimizing the process parameters for open-end spun yarns with multiple performance characteristics. A grey relational grade obtained from the grey relational analysis is used to optimize the process parameters. Optimal process parameters can then be determined by the Taguchi method using the grey relational grade as the performance index. CVm%, hair number per meter, and tenacity of yarn were selected as quality characteristics. Using these characteristics, the process parameters, including rotor speed, rotor diameter, opener speed, yarn linear density and navel type are optimized. The raw materials used in this investigation were cotton fibers (35%) and cotton waste (65%) collected from ginning machines. The Experimental results show parameter rotor speed has the most significant effect on the multiple performance characteristics.

This paper investigates multi-objective optimization of electrical discharge machining process parameters using a new combination of Taguchi method and principal component analysis based grey relational analysis. In this study, three conflicting performance characteristics related to surface integrity such as surface roughness, white layer thickness and surface crack density are considered in electrical discharge machining of RENE80 nickel super alloy. The process parameters considered are peak current, pulse on time and pulse off time. The experiments are conducted based on Taguchi method and these experimental results are used in grey relational analysis and weights of the corresponding performance characteristics are determined by principal component analysis. The weighted grey relational grade is used as a performance index to determine optimum process parameters and results of the confirmation experiments indicate that the combined approach is effective in determining optimum process parameters.

Abstract Rotor speed and twist per metres (tpm) are two key parameters in open-end rotor spinning of cotton yarns. High spinning productivity can be obtained by keeping the rotor speed high and twist level as low as possible. However, too high rotor speed may result in yarn imperfections and too low twist level may result in lower tenacity yarns. This study aimed at optimising the multiple yarn characteristics in open-end rotor spinning using the Taguchi method and the grey relational analysis. Cotton yarn samples of 30 tex were produced on rotor spinning machine with different twist levels (i.e. 500, 550, 600 and 700 tpm) at different rotor speeds (i.e. 70,000, 80,000, 90,000 and 100,000 rpm) according to the Taguchi design of experiment. Optimal spinning process parameters were determined using the grey relational grade as the performance index. It was concluded that for the cotton fibres and yarn count used in this study, optimum properties of the yarns could be obtained at 90,000 rpm rotor speed and 700 tpm.

The main objective of this paper is to investigate and optimize the cutting parameters on multiple performance characteristics in end milling of Aluminium Silicon alloy reinforced with Aluminium Nitride (AlSi/AlN MMC) using Taguchi method and Grey relational analysis (GRA). The fabrication of AlSi/AlN MMC was made via stir casting with various volume fraction of particles reinforcement (10%, 15% and 20%). End milling machining was done under dry cutting condition by using two types of cutting tool (uncoated & PVD TiAlN coated carbide). Eighteen experiments (L18) orthogonal array with five factors (type of tool, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and volume fraction of particles reinforcement) were implemented. The analysis of optimization using GRA concludes that the better results for the combination of lower surface roughness, longer tool life, lower cutting force and higher material removal could be achieved when using uncoated carbide with cutting speed 240m/min, feed 0.4mm/tooth, depth of cut 0.3mm and 15% volume fraction of AlN particles reinforcement. The study confirmed that with a minimum number of experiments, Taguchi method is capable to design the experiments and optimized the cutting parameters for these performance characteristics using GRA for this newly develop material under investigation.

In this paper, a grey relational analysis method based on Taguchi is proposed to improve the multi-performance characteristics of VMC shoulder milling process parameters in the processing of AA6063 T6. Taking into account four process parameters such as coolant, depth of cut, speed and feed, there are three level of each process parameter in addition to two levels of coolant. 18 experiments were used by L18 orthogonal array using the taguchi method. Multi-performance features like surface roughness and material removal rate are used. Grey Relational Analysis method is used to obtain the Grey Relational Grade, and the multiperformance characteristics of the process are pointed out. Then, the Taguchi response table method and ANOVA are used to analysis data. In order to ensure the validity of the test results, a confirmation test was conducted. The study also shows that this method can effectively improve the multi-function characteristics of shoulder milling process. In his work microstructure and mechanical properties of AA6063 T6before and after shoulder milling have been investigated.

The purpose of this paper is to develop 7 wt% yttria stabilized zirconia (7YSZ) thermal barrier coatings by optimization of the atmospheric plasma spraying process parameters. Multiple-performance characteristics, such as coating thickness and surface roughness were considered for optimization. Eighteen experimental runs based on the L18 orthogonal arrays of the Taguchi method were used to show the best conditions among the plasma spraying parameters. Thereafter, best possible process parameters were obtained by the analysis of variance using grey relational analysis as the quality guide. Results signify the application possibility of the grey-based Taguchi technique for continuous development of quality coating in the area of advanced manufacturing technology.

This article presents multi-response optimization of friction stir welding of dissimilar Al 6061-Titanium alloy using Taguchi based grey relational analysis. Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array was used for designing the experiments. Process parameters considered for the experiments were rotational speed, traverse speed and tilt angle. Ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and % elongation were the responses measured which all are larger-the-better characteristics. Based on grey relational grade, optimum levels of process parameters were identified and further ANOVA analysis was carried out to find most significant process parameter.
