Automation is a process of handling and transport of products, which allows replacing man’s control by operation of manipulators and robots. It represents a highly complex process, which includes several operations and they are usually performed automatically by particular devices. In this article, a technical design of a universal versatile robotic manipulator for handling with automotive products is presented. The designed device is intended for handling with automotive products with a maximum weight of 25 kg. The technical solution of the manipulator comes from required specifications and operation conditions given by the customer, who will install it as a part of an automatic line. A particularity of the manipulator is the special functionality, which allows handling with objects of both circular and angular shapes. This is ensured by adaptable gripping fingers, which are able to adjust their position by means of a well-considered mechanism. The technical design of the manipulator includes calculation of forces needed for reliable gripping of manipulated objects, choice of a working screw and calculation of the load and carrying out of strength analyses of the main loaded part of the manipulator. Based on results, there is recommended an appropriate material for the manufacture of the device to reach its optimal accuracy of positioning of handled objects during a long-term operation.

Purpose This paper aims to introduce a new thought process and associated predictive tool to assist designers of infrastructure for unfamiliar rural societies in understanding the specific non-engineering influences that can lead to greater effectiveness of engineered infrastructure. Design/methodology/approach Using sociological principles, a simple checklist tool has been designed to assess specific societal conditions that may influence intervention outcomes. The tool, when weighted by regional predispositions, allows the designer to incorporate five non-engineering influences into technical design of engineered infrastructure. Findings Early deployment of the tool indicates that the predictive process helps to adapt technical designs to societal contexts. It also enhances consultant understanding of the client’s values and needs to achieve a collaborative technical solution. Research limitations/implications Long-term outcomes have not been assessed, so additional time is needed to confirm the value of context in design performance. Further evaluations will refine the technical guideline process as well. Practical implications Merging sociological understanding with technical design allows engineers to assimilate client values and indigenous beliefs into an infrastructure, preventing rejection due to incompatibility with local context. Originality/value The concept of contextual engineering, which melds technical approach with societal influences, is the original contribution of the author, as is the predictive tool.

The motor shaft of a gas turbine engine, being a highly loaded part of a particularly critical purpose, has increased requirements for maintaining the level of properties during long-term operation, ensuring the structural strength of the product. An increase in the resource and durability of the product is achieved due to the development of new materials that surpass the used domestic and foreign analogues in their mechanical characteristics. FSUE «VIAM» has deve-loped high-strength structural steels with enhanced characteristics of strength, toughness, durability and heat resistance.

Not only fatigue of the metal materials but also inferior quality of the lubricant oils will be occurred for the machines after the long-term operation. Therefore, the self-developed reciprocating friction tester with the measurement system was used to experimental study the tribological properties for the automobile oil regeneration in this study. The major parameters are the reciprocating speeds and the three types of the oil. The ball specimens were made of SUJ2 and the plate specimens were made of SUS304. The variations of friction coefficient and electrical contact resistance were simultaneously recorded during dynamic friction process. After each friction test, the OM was used to observe the worn surface. According to the experimental results, the differences between the new oil, the old oil and the regeneration oil can be clarified. The viscosity, density and color were quite similar for the old oil and the regeneration oil. However, the tribological properties of the regeneration oil were significantly improved. Moreover, it also showed stable during the dynamic friction tests. Even compared with the new oil, the regeneration oil sometimes showed better lubrication under the operation conditions. The wear resistance of the regeneration oil does show great potentials.

Traffic safety is an essential requirement for railways. In order to ensure uninterrupted transportation of passengers and goods by rail by the enterprise of JSC "Ukrainian Railways", the task of ensuring the operation of rolling stock outside the assigned line of service remains urgent. Proceeding from this, it follows that it is necessary to carry out tests aimed at creating conditions for the operation of rolling stock while maintaining dynamic and strength characteristics. This article presents the order, scope and results of strength tests of rolling stock after long-term operation on the example of an AS1a-type railroad car. The results of the maximum stress levels, standard deviation, fatigue safety factors, the dependence of the stress level on the speed of movement are obtained. Based on the research results, a technical solution has been developed that allows using technical diagnostics methods to extend the service life of the AS1a type railroad cars after the end of the assigned service life.
