A novel coumarin-derived dithioacetal chemosensor, 8-(1,3-dithian-2-yl)-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (LS), has been designed and synthesized. The sensor LS showed highly selective fluorescent sensing for Hg2+ with a low detection limit of 0.81 nM in the pH range from 6.15 to 9.96 in ethanol/water (1:1, v/v) solution. The sensing mechanism of LS toward Hg2+ was proposed and verified by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies. Under an ultraviolet lamp, the fluorescence color changes could be easily detected by the naked eye. In addition, the sensor LS has been applied in the trace detection of Hg2+ in real water samples.

A novel steroid-derived Schiff base chemosensor, N′-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-3α-hydroxy-cholanhydrazide (LA), has been designed and prepared via microwave irradiation. The sensor LA showed highly selective fluorescent sensing for Al3+ with a low detection limit of 34 nM in the pH range from 6.05 to 9.32 in ethanol/water (1:2, v/v) solution. The binding stoichiometry between LA and Al3+ was determined as 1:1 by Job’s plot and further verified with 1H NMR studies. Under a UV lamp, the fluorescence color changes could be easily detected by the naked eye. In addition, the sensor LA has been applied in detection of Al3+ in real water samples.

Silver is a common catalyst in industrial production, and the frequent use of Ag+ can cause water pollution. Thus, the detection of Ag+ in the environment is necessary to determine the level of pollution from silver. In this work, we designed a new, highly selective near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe QCy to detect Ag+. The probe exhibits “turn-off” fluorescence quenching responses at 760 nm towards Ag+ over other relevant cations, with outstanding sensitivity and a low detection limit (0.03 µM), which is considerably lower than the standard of the World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water (0.9 µM). Meanwhile, QCy showed a very good linearity at a low concentration of Ag+ with a ‘naked eye’ visible color change of solution from blue to red. The probe has been applied successfully for the detection of Ag+ in real water samples.

A betanin-based colorimetric probe was simply extracted from bougainvillea flowers for the selective detection of Cu2+ ions. The experimental results showed that the betanin pigment could be employed as an optical sensor for Cu2+ with significant color changes in tap water samples.

The aim of the present in vitro study was to investigate the effects of 10% and 40% citric acid (CA) on the color of calcium silicate–based cements (CSCs) in comparison to the effects of common root canal irrigants. Samples of six CSCs (n = 6)—ProRoot MTA (Dentsply, Tulsa, OK, USA), Biodentine (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France), MTA Plus (Avalon Biomed Inc, by Prevest Denpro Limited, Jammu, India), MTA Repair HP (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil), Ortho MTA (BioMTA, Seoul, Korea), and Retro MTA (BioMTA, Seoul, Korea)—were immersed in 10% and 40% CA as well as 15% EDTA, 2% NaOCl, 2% CHX, and 0.9% NaCl for 15 min, 1 h, and 24 h. ΔE values, representing the difference between the final and baseline values of the color components, were then determined using a VITA Easyshade Compact 5.0 spectrophotometer. Naked-eye evaluation of the changes in color and structures of the materials was performed using our own scale. Upon immersion of the materials in both 10% and 40% CA, there were statistically significant differences between spectrophotometric color measurement results for all CSCs (P < 0.05). However, CA does not cause dark discoloration, observable with the naked eye, of any of the materials, such as NaOCl and CHX. Significant statistical differences were also found between all CSCs in terms of submersion duration (P < 0.05). CA, which could be an alternative to EDTA use, caused greater CSCs discoloration and changed some of their structures. Unless required by the therapeutic procedure, clinicians should pay attention to the fact that the irrigant may affect the CSCs discoloration and minimize the contact time of irrigant with CSCs.
