A structured diversity and equality management system (DEMS) contributes to the smooth and peaceful functioning of organisations. The review of literature shows that the impact of DEMS on organisational performance and growth is found to be positive in Western countries. However, there appears to be a lack of research on the role of DEMS in Indian organisations, especially in the IT industry. This study makes an attempt to assess the impact of DEMS on perceived organisational performance and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and empirically validate the mediating role of OCB in Indian IT firms. This study used descriptive research design, and the nature of research questions mandated the primary cross-sectional data collection method. The online questionnaire was e-mailed to human resource managers as well as executives of IT firms in India. Responses of 220 respondents were analysed to test the hypotheses of the research using CB-SEM. The results confirm a mediating role of OCB on the linkage between DEMS and perceived organisational performance. Findings suggest that organisations should promote OCB as it contributes significantly in establishing a positive, committed and conflict-free work environment.

This study investigates the mediating role of remuneration in the impact of organizational culture (i.e. clan, adhocracy, hierarchy and market) on the intention to stay of employees in the information technology (IT) sector. The research model in this paper is developed from previous studies on organizational culture and human resource management. A survey was conducted between May and July 2017 on employees of 25 IT companies in Vietnam, yielding 600 valid responses. On this sample we use confirmative factor analysis and structural model for quantitative analysis. The results indicate that adhocracy culture and market culture have a significant and direct impact on employees’ intention to stay. Meanwhile, remuneration plays a mediating role in these relationships. On the contrary, the relationships between clan culture and hierarchy culture with intention to stay are not statistically significant. These results offer theoretical and practical contributions to human resource managers and references for future research.

PurposeGrowing evidence supports the role of student assistantships in enhancing graduates’ preparedness for practice. However, there is limited evidence concerning the impact of aligning assistantships with graduates’ first doctor post. The aims of our study were to determine newly-qualified doctors’ views on the value their assistantship experience, effects on anxiety levels, confidence and preparedness for increased responsibilities, exploring change over time and whether effects differ according to assistantship alignment.DesignWe conducted a longitudinal cross-sectional online questionnaire study examining experiences of aligned and non-aligned assistantships across the transition from medical student to newly-qualified doctor. The questionnaire was distributed to final year medical students within Wales, UK (n=351) and those commencing their first post in Wales, UK (n=150) in June 2015 at Time 1 (T1), and repeated in September 2015 (1 month following transition, T2) and January 2016 (T3).ResultsResponse rates at T1 were 50% (n=251, aligned=139, non-aligned=112), T2 36% (n=179, aligned=83, non-aligned=96) and T3 28% (n=141, aligned=69, non-aligned=72): 15% (n=73, aligned=36, non-aligned=37) completed all questionnaires. Paired longitudinal analysis was undertaken where possible. Significant differences were observed between participants on aligned and non-aligned assistantships in terms of the value they place on their assistantship experiences, their anxiety, confidence levels and preparedness for responsibility.ConclusionAlthough not sustained, aligned assistantships seem to provide graduates with additional benefits during the August transition. Further work is required to establish what it is about the aligned assistantship programme that works and why.

Previous research indicated that insecure attachment, that is, higher levels of attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety, is negatively associated with relationship satisfaction. The present study investigated the mediating role of gratitude toward the partner in this association. In a cross-sectional design, 362 participants (84% female, age range 18–70 years) involved in a romantic relationship completed an online questionnaire assessing attachment avoidance and anxiety, gratitude toward the partner, and relationship satisfaction. Data were analyzed by means of regression and bootstrap analyses. The regression analysis revealed significant negative total and direct effects of both avoidance and anxiety on relationship satisfaction. The bootstrap analyses revealed a significant negative indirect effect of avoidance, but not anxiety, on relationship satisfaction via gratitude toward the partner. Specifically, higher levels of avoidant attachment were related to less gratitude toward the partner, which in turn was associated with lower relationship satisfaction. These findings suggest that it might be valuable applying gratitude interventions to clients high in attachment avoidance attending couples therapy.

Background: Perceived severity of COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2) is known to be associated with mental health of people in general and health professionals in particular in Western societies. However, its association with the mental health of students in Pakistan, which is predominantly a Muslim society, remains unclear so far. Moreover, the role of Muslim religiosity for such an association has not yet been investigated. We aimed to examine the association and report findings on the impact of perceived severity on mental health with a sample of students from all five provinces of Pakistan. Methods: We did a cross-sectional online survey from 1,525 Pakistani students in March 2020 using standardized measurement tools. We then determined the prevalence of perceived severity among students and its impact on their mental health. The strength of associations between these variables was estimated using generalized linear models, with appropriate distribution and link functions. Structural equation modeling through SmartPLS (3.0) software was utilized to analyze the results.Findings: The perceived severity of COVID-19 is significantly associated with mental health of Pakistani students, whereas Muslim religiosity is a strong mediator between perceived severity and mental health of Pakistani students. Conclusions: Though the perceived severity of COVID-19 is associated with mental health, this relationship can be better explained by the role of Muslim religiosity. When tested individually, the perceived severity accounted for only 18% variance in mental health that increased up to 57% by the mediating role of Muslim religiosity. This difference clearly indicates the mediating role of Muslim religiosity in the association between perceived severity and mental health for Pakistani students.

Objective: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of internal communication (IC) of organisations on the quality of the individual–organisation relationship, specifically with regard to the effects generated with respect to individual performance (IP) in a pandemic framework. In this sense, the study intends to evaluate the effects of IC on the employee’s IP, having as a mediator perceived organisational support (POS). Methodology: To achieve the aforementioned objectives, a cross-sectional quantitative study was prepared, data for which were collected during a period of confinement that took place between 9 February and 15 March 2021. A total of 340 individuals of both sexes participated in the study. Genders were 67.6% female and 32.4% male, with ages ranging from 25 years to over 61 years, from all districts of Portugal and the Islands. Results: The main results obtained showed that IC was positively and significantly correlated with POS and also with IP, and that there was also a total mediation effect of POS in the relationship between IC and IP. Practical implications: These results seem to support the need for organisations to invest in their internal communication practices as a way of stimulating strong and fruitful relationships between workers and the organisation. Internal communication seems to be a relevant indicator for the management of proximity relationships with workers, especially in adverse contexts, like the ones experienced during the pandemic crisis. Well-developed internal communication supports and practices seem to be a valid path towards developing bonds leading to improved performance.

PurposeSafety management system (SMS) has been widely adopted to explore its influence on safety performance (SP). However, most existing researches recognized SMS as a one-dimension structure and neglected the influences of its subdimensions. Similarly, the impact of safety responsibility (SR) on SP received little attention. This study aims to explore the relationship between subdimensions of SMS and SP, while incorporating the mediating effect of SR.Design/methodology/approachThe research data were gathered from safety management evaluation report of a large real estate enterprise in China during 2010–2017. This paper carries out a series of data analyses to explore the impact of SMS and SR on SP. In order to analyze the synergistic impacts of SMS and SR on SP, path analysis, correlation analysis and mediation analysis were conducted using hypotheses concerning with the main subdimensions.FindingsThe results indicated SMS and SR decreased the project risk level and improved SP of real estate projects. Furthermore, the effect of SR partially mediated the relationship between the SMS and SP.Practical implicationsFindings in this research contribute to improve SP in real estate industry as well as other industries by the active assumption of SR and the successful implementation of SMS.Originality/valueThis research shows the relationship between subdimensions of SMS and SP and the mediating role of SR on SMS–SP relationship to improve SP in real estate industry.
