Abstract Background There is a need for novel interventions to target inadequate levels of adolescent physical activity behavior. Previous research indicates that better understanding of the processes by which social networks influence physical activity behavior in adolescents may be useful to enhance intervention design. Methods This study used a multi-methods approach to aid our understanding about the role of social networks for adolescent physical activity behavior. The quantitative phase of data collection was analyzed using a three-step linear regression model using cross-sectional data from the WiSe study (n = 529 participants, 48.6% female, mean age 14.38 years (SD 0.32)). A demographically reflective sub-sample of schools were invited to take part in the qualitative phase, which involved focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was used to explore findings from the quantitative phase in greater depth, and identify other themes pertaining to the association between social networks and physical activity behavior. Results Males’ physical activity behavior was predicted by their friend group (0.46, p = 0.007) whereas females’ physical activity was predicted by their best friend (0.21, p = 0.03). The three main findings that were uncovered by the regression analysis were explored during the qualitative phase: 1) friends have similar physical activity behaviors; 2) friendship social networks may influence differently early adolescent male and female physical activity behavior; 3) popularity and sociability were not associated with physical activity behavior. Two additional themes emerged from the analysis of focus group data: 4) social norms and 5) external factors that may impact the relationship between adolescent physical activity behavior and social networks. Conclusions The investigation of the interplay between the findings from each phase of the inquiry indicated that social networks influence in different ways and to different degrees the physical activity of adolescent males and females. In turn, these insights point to the need for a systematic tailoring process for the development and implementation of physical activity behavior interventions.

BACKGROUND Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality worldwide. Currently, we count on technologies’ vertiginous advances, mostly in smartphone applications (apps), which showed to be useful in the introduction or expansion of physical activity. However, little attention has been paid to understanding the viewpoint of researchers from human movement sciences. OBJECTIVE To understand the perception of researchers from human movement sciences about using a smartphone app to promote physical activity behavior change. METHODS Ten physically active researchers (8 men and 2 women, mean [SD] age 32.4 [5.21] years), users of the Pacer smartphone app participated in a focus group. The focus group lasted two hours and was mediated by the first author using guiding questions grouped into three categories: app features, barriers and facilitators to physical activity and challenges to behavior change. We performed a qualitative analysis, using the content analysis approach based on the audio records, using participants' verbal reports as a unit of analysis. RESULTS The focus group revealed that physical activity has always been present in the participants' lives. Participants identified changes in their patterns of physical activity over time, incorporating technologies during their exercise sessions. They realized that throughout life the goal in physical activity changed from improving performance to improving health. Participants' life history of physical activity was associated with their preference for the app that stimulated competitiveness. The possibility of competing and being rewarded by their achievements are essential motivational tools. In this way, participants appreciated the possibility of creating groups and ranking among them. As facilitators for physical activity, the group pointed to the adequate city infrastructure and the possibilities of exercising with someone and being challenged by colleagues. As barriers, participants listed a lack of safety and the need to take the smartphone for the app using. CONCLUSIONS Our study reporting challenges and possibilities to drive changes in physical activity behavior by using smartphone apps. The focus group provided important resources and characteristics that had a positive impact on the behavior change and should be considered, such as: the participants’ challenge of overcoming themselves, the opportunity to compete with their peers to achieve personal goals, and the possibility to measure the amount of physical activity. These finds can contribute to improving app development and user acceptability, especially regarding features based on behavior change techniques. Additionally, although this is a descriptive qualitative study with a limited sample, using a smartphone app seems to contribute to physical activity behavior change, even among participants with adequate levels of physical activity.

Self-efficacy has proven to be an important determinant of adolescent physical activity behavior. However, there are still knowledge gaps related to how intervention techniques can improve the self-efficacy of physical activity behavior in adolescents. This systematic review aims to describe the techniques of intervening adolescent physical activity aimed at increasing self-efficacy. Data collection uses several electronic databases namely ScienceDirect, Elsevier, Proquest, Jstor, Wiley Online Library by using the help of remote Lib UI and Google Scholar. Keywords used in literature search are related to self-efficacy, physical activity, adolescent, innovation and promotion of physical activity. The results show that the most widely used technique is to build mastery experiences by asking participants to engage in physical activity during the intervention and outside the intervention session, providing physiological feedback, setting goals, monitoring themselves and seeing the intervention giver and others practicing the intervention. The results of the study are expected to be a reference for researchers and developers of interventions in increasing the self-efficacy of adolescent physical activity behavior so that it has positive implications for the development of youthful physical activity promotion efforts. Namun, masih ada kesenjangan pengetahuan terkait tentang bagaimana teknik intervensi yang dapat meningkatkan efikasi diri perilaku aktivitas fisik pada remaja. Tinjauan sistematis ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan teknik intervensi aktivitas fisik remaja yang bertujuan meningkatkan efikasi diri. Pengumpulan data menggunakan beberapa database elektronik yaitu ScienceDirect, Elsevier, Proquest, Jstor, Wiley Online Library dengan menggunakan bantuan remote Lib UI dan google scholar. Kata kunci yang digunakan dalam pencarian literatur berkaitan dengan self efficacy, physical activity, adolescent, innovation dan promotion physical activity. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa teknik yang paling banyak digunakan adalah membangun pengalaman penguasaan dengan meminta peserta melakukan aktivitas fisik pada saat intervensi dan di luar sesi intervensi, pemberian umpan balik fisiologis, penetapan tujuan, pemantauan diri serta melihat pemberi intervensi dan orang lain mempraktikkan intervensi. Hasil penelitian diharapkan bisa menjadi referensi bagi para peneliti dan pengembang intervensi dalam meningkatkan efikasi diri perilaku aktivitas fisik remaja sehingga memiliki implikasi positif bagi pengembangan upaya promotif aktivitas fisik remaja. Abstract Background Physical activity behavior is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. For its analysis, transdisciplinary biopsychosocial approaches yield great potential. In health research, the biopsychosocial model has experienced a renaissance. Researchers have tried to grasp the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. With this scoping review, we aimed to examine how the ‘biopsychosocial’ has been conceptualized in scientific work related to physical activity behavior. Methods The scoping review was informed by the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). A systematic literature search was conducted in Web of Science, SportDiscus, PsycArticles, PsycInfo, and PubMed. Only articles published in peer-reviewed journals that contained all three components of a biopsychosocial approach (e.g., bio/physio/genetic, psycho/mental, and socio/cultural/environmental) were included. We only included articles in our narrative synthesis that integrated physical activity behavior into a biopsychosocial model, or investigated or described physical activity behavior on the basis of such a model. Results Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria; eight articles pursued a biopsychosocial approach in the tradition of Engel, five employed a socio-ecological approach. The models in the analyzed articles referred to either correlates of physical activity behavior, or the influence of physical activity on health or aging. Only a minority of the articles, however, referred to interactions between biological, psychological, and social factors. Conclusions The included articles were quite heterogeneous in their approach to physical activity from a biopsychosocial perspective. The included articles illustrate that the adoption of a biopsychosocial perspective may assist to capture and understand the complex phenomenon of physical activity behavior and might inform future transdisciplinary physical activity research.
