AbstractConnected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) is a transformative technology that has great potential to improve urban traffic and driving safety. Electric Vehicle (EV) is becoming the key subject of next-generation CAVs by virtue of its advantages in energy saving. Due to the limited endurance and computing capacity of EVs, it is challenging to meet the surging demand for computing-intensive and delay-sensitive in-vehicle intelligent applications. Therefore, computation offloading has been employed to extend a single vehicle’s computing capacity. Although various offloading strategies have been proposed to achieve good computing performace in the Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) environment, it remains challenging to jointly optimize the offloading failure rate and the total energy consumption of the offloading process. To address this challenge, in this paper, we establish a computation offloading model based on Markov Decision Process (MDP), taking into consideration task dependencies, vehicle mobility, and different computing resources for task offloading. We then design a computation offloading strategy based on deep reinforcement learning, and leverage the Deep Q-Network based on Simulated Annealing (SA-DQN) algorithm to optimize the joint objectives. Experimental results show that the proposed strategy effectively reduces the offloading failure rate and the total energy consumption for application offloading.

Mobile technologies is evolving so rapidly in every aspect, utilizing every single resource in the form of applications which creates advancement in day to day life. This technological advancements overcomes the traditional computing methods which increases communication delay, energy consumption for mobile devices. In today’s world, Mobile Edge Computing is evolving as a scenario for improving in these limitations so as to provide better output to end users. This paper proposed a secure and energy-efficient computational offloading scheme using LSTM. The prediction of the computational tasks done using the LSTM algorithm. A strategy for computation offloading based on the prediction of tasks, and the migration of tasks for the scheme of edge cloud scheduling based on a reinforcement learning routing algorithm help to optimize the edge computing offloading model. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm Intelligent Energy Efficient Offloading Algorithm (IEEOA), can efficiently decrease total task delay and energy consumption, and bring much security to the devices due to the firewall nature of LSTM.

Abstract The combination of idle computing resources in mobile devices and the computing capacity of mobile edge servers enables all available devices in an edge network to complete all computing tasks in coordination to effectively improve the computing capacity of the edge network. This is a research hotspot for 5G technology applications. Previous research has focused on the minimum energy consumption and/or delay to determine the formulation of the computational offloading strategy but neglected the cost required for the computation of collaborative devices (mobile devices, mobile edge servers, etc.); therefore, we proposed a cost-based collaborative computation offloading model. In this model, when a task requests these devices' assistance in computing, it needs to pay the corresponding calculation cost; and on this basis, the task is offloaded and computed. In addition, for the model, we propose an adaptive neighborhood search based on simulated annealing algorithm (ANSSA) to jointly optimize the offloading decision and resource allocation with the goal of minimizing the sum of both the energy consumption and calculation cost. The adaptive mechanism enables different operators to update the probability of selection according to historical experience and environmental perception, which makes the individual evolution have certain autonomy. A large number of experiments conducted on different scales of mobile user instances show that the ANSSA can obtain satisfactory time performance with guaranteed solution quality. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the mobile edge computing (MEC) offloading system. It is of great significance to strike a balance between maintaining the life cycle of smart mobile devices and breaking the performance bottleneck of MEC servers.

Computation offloading technology extends cloud computing to the edge of the access network close to users, bringing many benefits to terminal devices with limited battery and computational resources. Nevertheless, the existing computation offloading approaches are challenging to apply to specific scenarios, such as the dense distribution of end-users and the sparse distribution of network infrastructure. The technological revolution in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and chip industry has granted UAVs more computing resources and promoted the emergence of UAV-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) technology, which could be applied to those scenarios. However, in the MEC system with multiple users and multiple servers, making reasonable offloading decisions and allocating system resources is still a severe challenge. This paper studies the offloading decision and resource allocation problem in the UAV-assisted MEC environment with multiple users and servers. To ensure the quality of service for end-users, we set the weighted total cost of delay, energy consumption, and the size of discarded tasks as our optimization objective. We further formulate the joint optimization problem as a Markov decision process and apply the soft actor–critic (SAC) deep reinforcement learning algorithm to optimize the offloading policy. Numerical simulation results show that the offloading policy optimized by our proposed SAC-based dynamic computing offloading (SACDCO) algorithm effectively reduces the delay, energy consumption, and size of discarded tasks for the UAV-assisted MEC system. Compared with the fixed local-UAV scheme in the specific simulation setting, our proposed approach reduces system delay and energy consumption by approximately 50% and 200%, respectively.

With the unprecedented increase of computation-intensive yet latency sensitive marine mobile Internet services, mobile edge computing (MEC) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been envisioned as promising approaches to providing with the low-latency as well as reliable computing services and ultra-dense connectivity. In this paper, we investigate the energy consumption minimization based energy-efficient MEC via cooperative NOMA for the UAV-assisted M-IoT networks. We consider that USVs offload their computation-workload to the UAV equipped with the edge-computing server subject to the UAV mobility. To improve the energy efficiency of offloading transmission and workload computation, we focus on minimizing the total energy consumption by jointly optimizing the USVs’ offloaded workload, transmit power, computation resource allocation as well as the UAV trajectory subject to the USVs’ latency requirements. Despite the nature of mixed discrete and non-convex programming of the formulated problem, we exploit the vertical decomposition and propose a two-layered algorithm for solving it efficiently. Specifically, the top-layered algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of optimizing the UAV trajectory based on the idea of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and the underlying algorithm is proposed to optimize the underlying multi-domain resource allocation problem based on the idea of the Lagrangian multiplier method. Numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms as well as the performance advantage of NOMA-enabled computation offloading in terms of overall energy consumption.</div>

The objective of this work is to decrease energy consumption of the aeration system at a mid-size conventional wastewater treatment plant in the south of Sweden where aeration consumes 44% of the total energy consumption of the plant. By designing an energy optimised aeration system (with aeration grids, blowers, controlling valves) and then operating it with a new aeration control system (dissolved oxygen cascade control and most open valve logic) one can save energy. The concept has been tested in full scale by comparing two treatment lines: a reference line (consisting of old fine bubble tube diffusers, old lobe blowers, simple DO control) with a test line (consisting of new Sanitaire Silver Series Low Pressure fine bubble diffusers, a new screw blower and the Flygt aeration control system). Energy savings with the new aeration system measured as Aeration Efficiency was 65%. Furthermore, 13% of the total energy consumption of the whole plant, or 21 000 €/year, could be saved when the tested line was operated with the new aeration system.

AbstractWith the developing of Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile edge computing (MEC), more and more sensing devices are widely deployed in the smart city. These sensing devices generate various kinds of tasks, which need to be sent to cloud to process. Usually, the sensing devices do not equip with wireless modules, because it is neither economical nor energy saving. Thus, it is a challenging problem to find a way to offload tasks for sensing devices. However, many vehicles are moving around the city, which can communicate with sensing devices in an effective and low-cost way. In this paper, we propose a computation offloading scheme through mobile vehicles in IoT-edge-cloud network. The sensing devices generate tasks and transmit the tasks to vehicles, then the vehicles decide to compute the tasks in the local vehicle, MEC server or cloud center. The computation offloading decision is made based on the utility function of the energy consumption and transmission delay, and the deep reinforcement learning technique is adopted to make decisions. Our proposed method can make full use of the existing infrastructures to implement the task offloading of sensing devices, the experimental results show that our proposed solution can achieve the maximum reward and decrease delay.
