AbstractThe soil parameters identification procedure is usually a trade-off between sophisticated soil model behaviour and the large number of parameters to identify. Such procedure that can accomplish both of these objectives is highly desirable, but also difficult. This paper presents a methodology for identifying soil parameters that takes into account different constitutive equations. For identifying the generalized Prager model parameters, associated to the Drucker and Prager failure criterion, using an in-situ pressuremeter curve, we have proposed a procedure that is based on an approach of inverse analysis. This approach involves the minimizing the function representing the area between the experimental curve and the simulated curve, obtained by fit in the model along the in-situ loading path. A comparative study between two optimization processes is proposed. The first is based on the technique of the simplex by Nelder and Mead, while the second is based on the decomposition of the pressuremeter curve in three distinct areas. After a brief description of an existing computer program called Press-Sim, which has been written in Fortran for analyzing a cavity expansion using the finite element method, a short explanation is given about the two optimization procedures considered in this article. Then, for a chosen site where soil strength parameters are measured, the comparative study has been performed for both methods at four different depths. For the determination of the angle of friction, the two procedures yield very close values and are in a good agreement with that given by the triaxial test, while for the cohesion, they both diverge from each other on both sides of the value measured by the trial test.

This paper describes an efficient methodology for the identification of soil parameters using the combination of the finite element method and the in situ pressuremeter test (PMT). The objective of the procedure applied here is to identify the parameters of generalized Prager model associated with the Drucker and Prager failure criterion from a pressuremeter expansion curve. The approach consists of minimizing the function representing the difference between the experimental curve and the curve obtained by integrating the model along the loading path in the in situ testing. First, both analytical expressions governing the problem of cavity expansion and those related to the finite element modeling are given in detail. Then, a Fortran computer program called "Press-Sim" along with the solution strategy are described and clearly explained. The influence of some model parameters as well as the probe geometry on the computed pressuremeter curves is examined. The paper finishes by presenting some identification examples drawn from real experimental tests for which the targeted parameters are compared with those of other experimental procedures. Results of comparison show a very good agreement.

Organohydrogels with distinct antifreezing and antidehydration properties have aroused great interest among researchers, and various organohydrogels and organohydrogel-based applications have emerged recently. There are two popular synthesis strategies to prepare these antifreezing and antidehydration organohydrogels: the in-situ gelling and the solvent displacement strategies. Although both strategies have been widely applied, there is a lack of comparative study of these two strategies. In this work, to elucidate the comparative advantages of the two synthesis strategies, we studied and compared the mechanical and environmental tolerant properties of the organohydrogels synthesized from both strategies. The glycerol-based and ethylene glycol-based chemical polyacrylamide (PAAm) organohydrogel and the glycerol-based physical gelatin organohydrogel were synthesized and studied. Through the comparative study, we have found that the organohydrogels from different strategies with the same dispersion medium showed similar antifreezing and antidehydration properties but different mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of these organohydrogels are influenced by two opposite factors for each strategy: the enhanced physical interactions induced strengthening and solvent effect or swelling induced weakening. We hope this study may provide a better understanding of the synthesis strategies of organohydrogels and provide a valuable guide to choose the suitable synthesis strategy for each application.

The satellite-based operational sea surface temperature (SST) was compared to the ship-based in-situ SSTs established by the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) over the eastern Canadian shelf (ECS) for a 3-year anal-ysis period (2005–2007). Two sets of operational SST analyses were considered in this study, with one set produced by the Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) and the other produced by the National Centers for Environmental Predic-tion (NCEP). The comparative study indicated that there was no appreciable systematic difference between the CMC and NCEP SST analyses over the ECS. The root mean squared difference (RMSD) between the AZMP ship-based in-situ SSTs and the satellite-based STT analyses over the ECS was about 1.0°C, without any obvious seasonal or geo-graphic trend. The RMSDs were relatively larger over the outer flank of the Grand Banks than the other regions of the ECS, mainly due to dynamically complicated circulation and hydrographic conditions over this shelf break area associated with the Labrador Current.

Abstract: This research is a comparative literary study that uses Malay and Javanese versions of Mahabarata text sources. The research objects used were the text edition of Pandhawa Gubah (PG) by Sudibjo Z. Hadisutjipto and the text of Cheritera Pandawa Lima (CPL) by Khalid Hussain. The research method used is descriptive-analysis method. In the comparative study used a comparative literary theory proposed by Endraswara (2011). The results of the text comparison reveal the similarities and differences in the image of Bima figures in the Javanese and Malay versions. The equation as a whole is that both texts contain the same heroic storyline and heroic character, Bima. In addition, Indian influence is still evident in the two texts seen from the nuances of Hinduism that exist in both texts. While the difference is seen in the events that accompany Bima's struggle in achieving his victory. Based on these similarities and differences, it can be seen that the authors attempt to represent the concept of metaphysical interactions vertically and horizontally expressed through PG text.

In the context of the controversies surrounding »globalisation« and In the context of the controversies surrounding »globalisation« and »multiculturality« the comparative study of cultures has the task of aiding intercultural communication and of contributing to the success of intercultural understanding. The model of contrastive cultural comparison discussed here is claimed to have applacibility to every possible study of other countries (»Auslandswissenschaft«) and to be able to provide the Geisteswissenschaften with an intercultural orientation.
