AIMS AND METHODIn response to frequent cancellations, we recently changed the format of our journal club. We invited a statistician to attend and each meeting focused specifically on critical appraisal and statistical analysis. Active learning principles were used where every participant critically appraised an aspect of the paper presented at each meeting. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the impact of the new format on attendance and satisfaction levels. Attendance and satisfaction levels were measured in the 3 months before and the 3 months after the new format was introduced.RESULTSAverage attendance increased from 10 to 15, with two psychologists and two trainees who did not work in the hospital starting to attend regularly. Satisfaction levels also increased significantly with respect to academic interest, enjoyment, usefulness and overall satisfaction.CONCLUSIONCombining statistical expertise with principles of active learning has led to increased satisfaction levels among participants in our journal club.

Journal clubs are a valuable tool to assist learners in the evaluation of scientific literature and to promote the adoption of evidence-based practices. The Middle East Fertility Society Embryology Specialty Interest Group developed a concise journal club to enhance the engagement of embryologists and provide the structure of a journal club. The embryology journal club STAR format is a monthly super group journal club meeting in which an invited presenting “star” author exposes his group’s article to the entire embryologist’s community. In our modified approach, instead of a traditional lecture, the journal article to be discussed will be sent to participants in advance in conjunction with the STAR (Study design validity, Tackling the methodology, Analysis of the results, Reflecting the results into practice) critical appraisal checklist and a short online quiz to be completed before the meeting. The concise embryology journal club STAR format may be beneficial for embryologists to help them develop an efficient and consistent means to appraise evidence in clinical practice and stay abreast of the latest clinical research.

Evidence based public health is one of the basic training tools of public health students and young officers in decision making. The training tools for early career specialists and trainees in public health is journal clubs (JC). It keeps the knowledge of professionals up to date and assist them in receiving information to design, plan, implement health care services, policies and strategies. The intention of the JC team was to raise awareness of methods for public health literature search, appraising it and applying this knowledge in their daily practices. A senior public health practitioner in Somaliland (the corresponding author) invited medical students and residents to have JCs as a part of their training. They did not accept the offer so the organizer invited practicing junior public health professionals instead. The JC team members were a general practitioner and 3 public health workers from Ministry of Health, public hospital physician, public health school and field public health officer. A weekly or twice weekly journal club took place to train them in critical appraisal. This continued for 15 months in a hybrid mentorship for the health care professionals. The team mentor selected a paper for discussion. Mentees choose a study design appraisal tool from the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) that matched the study to present. In the process of appraisal, a team member led the discussion using the checklist. The mentees presented their critical appraisal either orally or via a presentation. The checklist and paper were compared for assessing the study design and structure of the paper of the week. This approach of empowering junior public health officers in Somalia is a way forward for encouraging the professionals to use evidence based practice in their daily practices. This will improve their selection of research tools and translating the scientific work into their practice and services.

Abstract The pandemic has challenged training programs in numerous ways, specifically in the ability to conduct group based teaching sessions. To overcome this challenge Twitter was examined as a vehicle for engaging Geriatric Fellows in education about critical appraisal of clinical research. A secondary objective was to develop educational synergy among university-based programs. To achieve these aims, 5 Midwestern Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Fellowship programs agreed to enroll their fellows into a monthly Geriatrics Twitter Journal Club, that commences on Twitter Tuesday and lasts a week. Each month, an assigned fellow selects an article to discuss and creates a short video to introduce it. A Twitter meister deliveres structured questions to guide fellows’ collective input on the article being critiqued. Over a 3 month roll out of @GeriatricJC, the twitter account of the journal club has gained 144 followers that includes 20 fellows, 63 geriatricians/geriatric faculty, 28 organizational accounts, 5 students and around 28 other providers and experts. From December 2020- February 2021, account generated tweets resulted in an average of 397 impressions/day with 2548 visits to the account profile per month. Videos posted have averaged 73 views/video. Discussion in journal club using #GeriJC has garnered 178 tweets from participants. This project shows that Twitter is a feasible platform for a fellowship journal club among several training programs, thus expanding expertise in evidence-based medicine while lowering the administrative burden of preparing journal club within a single program and increasing both faculty and trainee convenience of learning.

Summary:The conceptual ideas of evidence based critical appraisal of diagnostic studies are described in this survey. In this context special attention is given to biases in study design such as verification- as well as information-bias limiting the validity of diagnostic studies. The practice of critical appraisal is demonstrated in an application to an example of a nuclear medicine scenario. The impact of evidence based medicine on nuclear medicine as a diagnostic discipline is discussed in detail.

ABSTRACT Journal club (JC) is an effective and valuable tool in medical education. Critical reasoning and evidence based medicine practice are core competencies required by medical professionals. In times of today journal club offers several advan- tages, e.g. update with current literature, promote evidencebased medicine, demonstrate continuing medical education, learn critical appraisal skills and promote social interaction and debate. However, this tool remains largely underutilized. Practice of inappropriate methodology results in failure to achieve the intended outcomes. This report attempts to track the history of journal club, its types, current innovations made and role in medical education. It explores the potential utilization of this tool in times to come. Objective: To evaluate the impact of introducing evidence based orthodontics journal club on the performance of postgraduate residents using a structured pre-test and post-test. Study Design and Setting: The comparitive cross sectional study was conducted among the orthodontic postgraduate residents (n=30) of third year and final year at the orthodontic department at de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore. Methodology: Present study was conducted among the orthodontic postgraduate residents (n=30) of third year and final year at the orthodontic department at de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore. Questions were extracted from the journal club articles. These questions were structured and used in journal club as pre-test and post-test during the academic year 2015-16 and comparison of the performance in the pre-test and post-test over the course of the year was done. Results: The results of pre-test showed a statistically significant increase during the academic year (p=0.031). Performance in the post-test also showed a statistically significant increase during the academic year (p=0.001). Conclusion: The redesigning of structured pre and post test in orthodontic journal club resulted in significant improvement in the performance of postgraduate orthodontic residents

AbstractObjectiveJournal clubs are accepted as an effective strategy for promoting evidence-based practice (EBP). However, journal clubs are underutilized in nursing education, and little is known about the impact of extracurricular, student-led journal clubs on EBP implementation among baccalaureate nursing students. The purpose of this study was to estimate the impact of journal club attendance on EBP implementation.MethodsA web-based survey was conducted in April 2019 following eight sessions of monthly journal club among senior nursing students (n=78).ResultsFifteen students attended four or more extracurricular, student-led journal club sessions (19.2%). EBP practice score was significantly higher among frequent journal club attendees. In multivariate analysis, journal club attendance was the significant predictor of EBP practice (β=0.34; p=0.006).ConclusionGraduating senior nursing students who attend extracurricular, student-led journal club sessions are more likely to carry out EBP practice. Participation in journal clubs may help increase their EBP competencies.
