Abstract. Historic records of α-dicarbonyls (glyoxal, methylglyoxal), carboxylic acids (C6–C12 dicarboxylic acids, pinic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, phthalic acid, 4-methylphthalic acid), and major ions (oxalate, formate, calcium) were determined with annual resolution in an ice core from Grenzgletscher in the southern Swiss Alps, covering the time period from 1942 to 1993. Measurements were conducted using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS). For the first time, long-term records of the carboxylic acids and dicarbonyls as well as their source apportionment are reported for Western Europe. Source assignment of the organic species present in the ice core was performed using principal component analysis. Our results suggest biomass burning, anthropogenic emissions, and transport of mineral dust to be the main parameters influencing the concentration of organic compounds. Ice core records of several highly correlated compounds (e.g. p-hydroxybenzoic acid, pinic acid, C7 and C8 dicarboxylic acids) can be related to the forest fire history in southern Switzerland. P-hydroxybenzoic acid was found to be the best organic fire tracer in the study area, revealing the highest correlation with the burned area from fires. Historical records of methylglyoxal, phthalic acid, and dicarboxylic acids C6, C10, and C12 are comparable with that of anthropogenic emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The small organic acids oxalic acid and formic acid are both highly correlated with calcium, suggesting their records to be affected by changing mineral dust transport to the drilling site.

Resumo: As cidades de Jaguarão, no Brasil, e de Paysandú, no Uruguai, ostentam títulos de heroicas por seus feitos de defesa diante de ataques sofridos em conflitos entre brasileiros e uruguaios na década de 60 do século XIX, no preâmbulo da Guerra do Paraguai. No entanto, no presente, o conjunto dos fatos que motivaram essas honras não mais está na memória dos habitantes desses lugares, pois a permanência do que existiu no passado – já apontou Jacques Le Goff – é fruto de escolhas selecionadas. Os registros históricos no Brasil e no Uruguai selecionaram versões parciais e contraditórias para explicar os acontecimentos, resultando em uma ficcionalização da história, conceito definido por Paul Ricoeur. Apoiados na historicização da ficção – outro conceito do pensador francês – o conto Don Sejanes, de Aldyr Garcia Schlee, e o romance No robarás las botas de los muertos, de Mario Delgado Aparaín, potencializam questionamentos e desmitificam as glórias que recobrem o imaginário popular, uma vez que, através dessas obras, é possível estabelecer relações entre os enfrentamentos ocorridos em Paysandú e Jaguarão, provocando uma desestabilização das heroicidades que sustentam o orgulho dos habitantes dessas cidades. Abstract: The cities of Jaguarão – Brazil and Paysandú – Uruguay are called “heroic” for their deeds in defending from strikes suffered during the conflicts between Brazilians and Uruguayans during the 1860s, in the preliminaries of the Paraguayan War. In present days, however, the set of facts that motivated such honors is no longer in the memory of the cities’ inhabitants, given that the permanence of past events lies upon selected choices – as pointed out by Jacques Le Goff. Historic records in Brazil and Uruguay have selected partial, contradictory versions to explain the events, which resulted in a fictionalization of history, a concept introduced by Paul Ricoeur. Leaning on the historicization of fiction – another concept by the French philosopher – Don Sejanes, short story by Aldyr Garcia Schlee, and No robarás las botas de los muertos, novel by Mario Delgado Aparaín, raise questions and demystify the glories that permeate the people’s imaginary: through these works, it is possible to establish relations between the battles held in Paysandú and Jaguarão, which results in a destabilization of the heroicities that nourish the pride of these cities’ inhabitants. Abstract The COVID 19 pandemic resulted in a major increase in fiscal imbalances and public spending. Spending and debt ratios reached new historic records in many advanced countries. To some observers this means heightened concerns about sustainability, while others argue for even more public spending financed with more “interest-free” debt. The facts, however, show that more public spending would be a risky strategy given very high public debt ratios. Moreover, there is much room for expenditure reductions and efficiency gains, that would allow to attain more sustainable public finances, boost real economic growth, enhance resilience against crises and pay for future challenges such as population aging, climate change and geopolitics.

Following a recent recrudescence of interest in the archaeology of Athabascan-speaking peoples in the Southwest, and in Navaho archaeology in particular, numerous students have entered upon various projects in this field. North central New Mexico has seemed to offer the most fertile center for such studies, inasmuch as early historic records place the Navahos in this area and the archaeological remains seem to corroborate this testimony.

At present P2P is widely applied on the Internet. But it still has a safety hazard because of the special feature of dynamic and anonymity of P2P.This paper designs a model of P2P trust based on fuzzy degree of nodes' credit. It computes the fuzzy degree of nodes' credit according to the historic records and the theory of fuzzy mathematics, and the result is used as the basis of choice of P2P transaction. The fuzzy degree of nodes' credit will be increased and decreased according to the behavior of the node, establishing the dynamic and reasonable mechanism of rewards and punishment. Experimental results show that the model designed in this paper has a better performance in the parts of trade success rate and network load.

Inferences about how an ecosystem has changed through time often rely on longitudinal records of species characteristics or niche parameters, and stable isotope analysis is a common tool employed to study changes in an organism’s niche. One of the most frequently used stable isotope measures is δ13C, a ratio of 13C to 12C. However, applying δ13C to historical samples comes with some methodological hurdles. One such hurdle is correcting for the 13C Suess effect or the change in atmospheric δ13C due to increased anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The change in the amount of carbon isotopes in the atmosphere through time can confound the study of historical shifts in species characteristics. No standard way of correcting for the 13C Suess effect has been suggested despite this problem. Here, I propose a standard 13C Suess correction model for the past ~1000 years using three prehistoric/historic records of atmospheric δ13C.
