Studios. This ability gained through visual design thinking. The spatial experience honed by three dimensional thinking from the medium diversity. The spatial experience learned through a room layout, proportion, and composition. This research used an experimental method and the primary data obtained by a “Likert” scale questionnaire. The Respondents are 50 students of the Architectural Design Studio. Moreover, the analysis focuses on the VR for spatial experience. The result was a descriptive explanation of the effectiveness of Virtual Reality for a spatial experience of architecture students at Technology University of Yogyakarta.

<p class="Keywords">Integration of human knowledge principle has been widespread in the world of Islamic education, including in Indonesia. Partially seen as an attempt to build a school of thought of architecture education, the principle opens the discussion on the discursive level of design thinking. This paper reveals an explorative effort to translate the idea into a class experiment in an architectural design studio. This class experimental research uses a content analysis of students’ reflective writing who involve the design process that deliberately begins with the introduction of revealed knowledge (Arabic: <em>wahy</em>) in Architectural Design Studio 7 at the Department of Architecture, Universitas Islam Indonesia. In conclusion, it has formulated a dynamic and multi-dimensional construction of design thinking based on the integration of knowledge</p>

Growing ageing population today may be necessitating building design decision makers to reconsider the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) standards in a way that accommodates senior occupants’ diverse and individual needs and demands. An experience design approach to rationalising and individualising end-user experience on how to utilise tangible products may serve to reflect user perceptions. Generally, architectural design practices tend to incorporate neither IEQ monitoring and analysis data, nor environmental experience design today. In response to the need for filling this gap, the authors of this paper conducted a feasibility study previously that led to structuring and defining an ‘Environmental Experience Design’ (EXD) research framework. Based on the previous case study on the collective spatial analysis and IEQ monitoring results, this paper further explored the usability and applicability of this proposed EXD framework particularly to the previously documented aged care facility in Victoria, Australia, which has been stressing active ageing agendas. This EXD framework usability experiment helped to build the capacity for engaging the subjectivity and objectivity of end users’ expectations, desires, and requirements in the architectural design thinking process. Nonetheless, due to the limitation of this initial and fundamental usability study’s resources and the objective, the necessity of adjusting the scale and scope of EXD analyses emerged. Moreover, the universality of this EXD research framework usage under various architectural typologies and user conditions yet require further attempts and investigations.

Architectural design studios aim to teach students the fundamental design thinking. Well-structured studio may help the students to explore the global responses and develop projects focused on the current conditions of the society. This study focuses on the adaptation of the proposed unit system for third year architectural design studio. The adaptation process of the proposed unit system analyzed with the description of the previous system. This study discusses the positive outcomes of the new proposed unit teaching method at School of Architecture, Yasar University.

We all know that the design thinking in architecture design is quite complex. However, the most existing studies on design thinking have been based upon reductionism. By introducing complex network theory, complexity perspective is used to re-interpret the architectural design in this paper. Moreover, the characteristics, rules and thinking characteristics of architectural creation are revealed by the characteristics of complex network. The paper advocates combining holism and reductionism to guide the architectural design, and pointed out that synesthesia exists among different factors of complex network. Based upon the scientific analysis on several famous cases, the author pointed out the great importance of synesthesia in architects' design thinking.

The digital model is both a simple tool of intuitive design thinking used to devise spatial compositions and the base layer of increasingly complex computational practices imbued with layers of contingent information. It has replaced paper as the primary venue of architectural communication, regardless of a user’s level of experience, specific purpose, or degree of sophistication. The ubiquity of the digital model begets complacency toward its implications, which include a significant threat to the logic of the traditional architectural design process established in the Renaissance and upheld throughout centuries of disciplinary change. The extent to which the threat poses a crisis is an open question, and architectural education today has an opportunity (if not a responsibility) to confront that question head-on, so as to produce a generation of practitioners cognizant of the stakes. After a generation of adaptation, and amid a steady stream of innovation that continually (and productively) destabilizes day-to-day practice, the logic of the digital model itself—the framework onto which innovations are applied—is taken for granted. Despite the persistence of increasingly tiresome digital-verses-analog debates, the discipline has yet to reflect critically on the basic nature of the digital model. That inquiry must begin at the most foundational level—the first year of the education of the architect. The project outlined in this paper is a central component of a new foundation design pedagogy currently under development at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It introduces students to the digital model in a manner that lays bare how contemporary design tools are both alike and unlike traditional ones, and it challenges students to wrestle with the relevance of historical practices in an era of relentless innovation. The description of the project included here is to be deployed in the second iteration of the new program in academic year 2019/2020. Illustrations are drawn from the first iteration in academic year 2018/2019. This is an ongoing experiment in architectural education being conducted in a transparent manner. Students understand that the curriculum is dynamic, not settled, and that their work is contributing to pedagogical and disciplinary research.

AbstractThe main hypothesis investigated in this paper is based upon the suggestion that the discursive reasoning in architecture supported by an explicit knowledge of spatial configurations can enhance both design productivity and the intelligibility of design solutions. The study consists of an examination of an architect's performance while solving intuitively a well-defined problem followed by an analysis of the spatial structure of their design solutions. One group of architects will attempt to solve the design problem logically, rationalizing their design decisions by implementing their explicit knowledge of spatial configurations. The other group will use an implicit form of such knowledge arising from their architectural education to reason about their design acts. An integrated model of protocol analysis combining linkography and macroscopic coding is used to analyze the design processes. The resulting design outcomes will be evaluated quantitatively in terms of their spatial configurations. The analysis appears to show that an explicit knowledge of the rules of spatial configurations, as possessed by the first group of architects can partially enhance their function-driven judgment producing permeable and well-structured spaces. These findings are particularly significant as they imply that an explicit rather than an implicit knowledge of the fundamental rules that make a layout possible can lead to a considerable improvement in both the design process and product. This suggests that by externalizing the design knowledge and restructuring it in a design model, creative thought can efficiently be evolved and stimulated.
