In this study, gastric contents of the medusa Rhizostoma pulmo distributed along the Samsun coast of the Black Sea were investigated between August 2008 and January 2010. Moreover, the relationship between the umbrella diameter and prey selectivity was determined. Captured R. pulmo individuals during the sampling period varied from 14.5 to 42.5 cm in umbrella diameter. The largest umbrella diameter was observed in October in both periods of the present study. Gastric contents of total 231 R. pulmo individuals have been gathered during the sampling period from all stations. 31 taxa, 10 larvae, 2 nauplii and fish and Copepod eggs from 11 phyla have been identified in the gastric contents of R. pulmo individuals. It has been detected that, feeding choices of R. pulmo individuals have differentiated and their food count has increased due to increasing umbrella diameter (according to Spearman rank correlation, r=0.70; p<0.05). According to the gastric content analyses, the feeding dietary of this species predominantly consists of copepods and dinoflagellates. It has been observed that taxa belonging to Crustaceans (59 %; Copepods 45.9 %) and Dinoflagellates (15.4 %) were densely present in the gastric contents gathered from R. pulmo individuals. The Phylum Ciliophora was another abundantly observed group in the gastric content of R. pulmo, with a 7.2 % representation rate. It was determined that jellyfish have a wide range of nutrition from phytoplankton to fish eggs. The sort of prey and amount of nutrition in stomach contents increased in parallel with the umbrella size. It is concluded that R. pulmo has important effects on the pelagic zone of the Black Sea ecosystem.

Palaemon adspersus is an inhabitant of the upper shelf (0–30 m) in temperate and subtropical zones of the East Atlantic, the northern limit of range reaching 60°N (Norway coast) and its southern limit being Atlantic waters of Morocco coast. The food of this species was studied at different times in different parts of its range, but it is described here for the first time for the Black Sea population. Stomach contents of 218 adult P. adspersus (74 of them had some food in the stomach, and 30 stomachs were full) were investigated. Samples were collected in September 2016 from commercial trap net near the Swan Islands in Karkinitsky Bay at the depth not exceeding 1.5 m. There was a small number of stomachs with food. It was due to a long stay of the shrimp in the trap net before their sampling. The shrimp had a body length (from the anterior edge of the orbits to the end of the telson) of 31.5–58.1 mm (males – 33.9–44.1 mm with a mode of 37 mm). The sex ratio was approximately 1 : 8 (11.7 % of males and 82.3 % of females). Females were represented by two groups. The first one had ovaries in maturity stage II and a modal size of 37 mm. The second group with the ovaries in maturity stage III had a modal size of 47 mm. Therefore, in September most of the females were mating, molting, and in their ovaries vitellogenesis began. By food composition, P. adspersus is a benthic feeder – euryphagous. Its food spectrum includes a wide range of food items from detritus and plant residues to gastropods, higher crustaceans, including shrimp, and fish. P. adspersus is primarily a gatherer detritophagous and macrophages, 70 % of its virtual food lump consisted of detritus and corpses of higher crustaceans. However, in relation to polychaetes it behaves as attacking predator while to gastropods it behaves as a grazing one. The comparison of the food composition of P. adspersus in Karkinitsky Bay (2016) with that in the Baltic Sea (1977), in the waters of Atlantic (1987) and Mediterranean (1993–1994) coasts of Spain reveals its spatial and temporal quasi-stability. Based on the totality of available data on food composition of P. adspersus, it should be attributed to sublittoral predators-opportunists.

Distribution of diatom algae is limited by their tolerance to environmental factors. Although a genus Toxarium has been evolving for more than 100 million years, it is represented by only two species. Toxarium undulatum is widely spread in tropical and subtropical seas, and it can be also found in the Black Sea, the salinity of which is twice lower than the oceanic one. Ecological and psychological characteristics research of this species is of great interest in terms of its relationship to salinity. T. undulatum clonal cultures were sampled in the Donuzlav Lake connected to the Black Sea (southwest of the Crimean Peninsula) and on Gran Canaria coast (Canary Islands archipelago). Experiments on the salinity tolerance limits showed, that the Black Sea clones were viable in a range of at least 30 ‰ (12 to 42 ‰). The same wide range of salinity tolerance with slightly higher values was observed among oceanic clones of this species. Optima of vegetative growth and sexual reproduction were determined. Optima of the Black Sea clones appeared to be 27.8 and 27.2 ‰, respectively, which was significantly higher than salinity observed in population habitat. Similar higher optima of vegetative growth and sexual reproduction, compared with those salinity values, at which natural population developed, were observed for a number of other Black Sea diatoms, which proved their oceanic (Mediterranean) origin. It was concluded that T. undulatum, along with other species, began to populate the Black Sea basin about seven thousand years ago after Mediterranean Sea water started to flow into the freshened Novoevksinsky Sea-Lake through the Bosporus Strait. However, the evolution rate did not allow bringing physiological and ecological characteristics of the species studied into full agreement with environmental conditions. Oceanic origin is evidently seen in its physiological reactions to salinity. Possibility of speciation due to settlement of the Black Sea with oceanic species is discussed.

In recent years researchers have attracted their attention to such glycosidases as α-L-rhamnosidase (α-L-rhamnoside-rhamnohydrolase – EC 3.2.1.40). The substrates of their action are widespread in the plant world glycosides such as naringin, quercetrin, hesperidin, neohesperidin, and rutin, from which α-L-rhamnosidases cleave the terminal unreduced L-rhamnose residues. This specificity of α-L-rhamnosidases can be used in various industries: food – to improve the quality of drinks (reducing bitterness in citrus juices, enhancing the aroma of wines), as well as production of food additives; in the pharmaceutical industry – to improve the biological properties of bioflavonoids, in particular anti-inflammatory. A number of them are characterized by cardio- and radioprotective effects, have antioxidant, cytotoxic, antibacterial, antisclerotic properties, and are used in the complex treatment of coronary heart disease, including angina pectoris. The use of α-L-rhamnosidases in the chemical industry is associated with a reduction in the cost of rhamnose production as well as various plant glycosides and rutinosides. In the literature available to us, no data were found on the producers of α-L-rhamnosidases among the representatives of actinobacteria, which are known to synthesize a wide range of biologically active compounds, including antibiotics and enzymes. Purpose. To study the ability of actinobacteria isolated from water and bottom sediments of the Black Sea, to produce a-L-rhamnosidase, and also to study the properties of the most active producer. Methods. Glycosidase activity was determined by the Romero and Davis methods, protein – by the Lowry method. Results. The study of 12 glycosidase activities in 10 strains of actinobacteria isolated from bottom sediments of the Black Sea indicated that 6 investigated strains showed the ability to synthesize an enzyme with a-L-rhamnosidase and b-D-glucosidase activity. Studies have shown that the highest α-L-rhamnosidase activity (0.14 U/mg protein) was manifested by Acty 5 isolate with an optimum pH of 7.0 and a temperature optimum of 38°C. The enzyme preparation showed substrate specificity both for natural (rutin, naringin, neohesperidin) and synthetic (p-nitrophenyl derivatives of L-rhamnose and D-glucose) substrates. Conclusions. Promising Acty 5 isolate with high a-L-rhamnosidase and low b-Dglucosidase activity was found among marine actinobacteria. Bacteria with two enzymes activity expand the possibilities of their practical use.

Abstract Conchological Variability of Anadara inaequivalvis (Bivalvia, Arcidae) in the Black-Azov Sea Basin. Anistratenko, V. V., Anistratenko, O. Yu., Khaliman, I. A. - An alien species in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov - Anadara inaequivalvis (Bruguiere, 1789) - was recently discovered to have a wide range of shell variability. From the investigated samples (over 900 valves) six basic types of the shell commissural opening were defined; they are not, however, discrete conditions. Th e presence of intermediate variants reveals a gradual (continuous) character of the shell variability and indicates that all the samples investigated belong to the same species. Th e variation of some other Anadara characteristics is also discussed, including: quantity and ornamentation of the ribs on the surface of the valves, quantity of chevrons on the ligament area, shape of the hinge plate and quantity of hinge teeth. A comparison of conchological characteristics of Anadara from the Black-Azov Sea Basin with A. inaequivalvis from southeast India shows that ranges and patterns of shell variability of Azov-Black Sea Anadara correspond to variability of A. inaequivalvis from this species type locality - Coromandel Coast of India.

AbstractMorphological data for Acanthocephaloides propinquus (Arhythmacanthidae) from gobiid fishes from the northwestern Black Sea are presented. Individuals from the Black Sea differ from the descriptions based on Mediterranean specimens in having 4–5 proboscis hooks per row in the former and 5–6 in the latter. The size of the cuticular spines is rejected as a diagnostic character for A. propinquus because their length varies in a wide range (3.0–7.5 µm). The diagnostic characters for identifying A. propinquus include the presence of small culticular spines, the testes located in the central part of the body and an acanthor having a single hooklet lacking a root.

Problem Statement and Purpose. The diverse and extensive geological materials and geophysical data used in forecasting and prospecting operations for oil and gas exploration within the Black Sea’s northwestern shelf are usually interpreted in a complex manner. This complexity, however, is often spontaneous and fragmentary, with no new theoretical concepts taken into account. For example, the theory of global fluidogenesis represents an alternative hypothesis to the organogenic-sedimentary formation of hydrocarbon deposits but is commonly not considered. The authors of this article believe that the complexity should be replaced by a method of directed rank interpretation of geological information, in which ranking distinguishes the maximum information on one of the sections of geological work with regard to its completeness and consistency. The purpose of this study is to apply expert analysis and rank correlation of obtained information to geological and forecasting research on hydrocarbons. To achieve this goal, two basic principles, rank and direction, are considered. The data include seismic, tectonic-geodynamic, lithological, geochemical, mineralogical, and meiobenthic characteristics of the sea bottom scaled according to their sensitivity to the independent variable, i. e., hydrocarbons. Study area, material, and methods. The Pradneprovskaya area has been chosen for analysis. It is a promising location for oil and gas exploration in the shallow part of the inner northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. Geologically, this is the area of junction for the South Ukrainian monocline with the system of blocks included in the Predobrudzha-Crimean riftogenic trough. The area was studied by geophysical, geochemical (hydrocarbon gases, liquid hydrocarbons), mineralogical (X‑ray diffraction of clay minerals, thermobarogeochemistry of inclusions in minerals), and paleontological (foraminifera, nematodes, ostracods) methods, along with the drilling of a deep (2352 m) parametric well (Pradneprovskaya‑2). Results. It is shown that expert analysis of the diverse information within the framework of selected tasks, which are poorly formalized into a single system, provides the basis for an effective method of comparing information databases formed on different principles. This analysis is founded on the principle of directed (vector) ranking, where each rank narrows the search area and becomes more sensitive to the hydrocarbon deposit. The article gives an example of how this method can be used for a specific objective in its entirety, namely: (a) selection of information ranks (parameters), (b) selection of experts, (c) calculation of the rank matrix, (d) determination of hierarchical dependencies of ranks, (e) verification of the matrix, and (e) calculation of the concordance coefficient. The obtained results indicate that the proposed method of expert analysis with rank correlation under modern conditions using diverse geological materials that are not formalized into a single database, provides high reliability in the comprehensive interpretation of data. The method will help optimize geological and forecasting research on hydrocarbons within the Black Sea shelf.

Pseudodiaptomus marinus was initially discovered at the end of September 2016 in a sample taken during a long-term plankton survey of Sevastopol Bay started in 2002. We found 6 females and 12 copepodites (I-V stages) of P. marinus at the center of Sevastopol Bay (St. 3) on September 22. At the mouth of Bay (St. 2) the species was not found. Both females and copepodite stages I-V of P. marinus were found at the both stations on November 11. Abundance of P. marinus increased to 1236 individuals in sample (1373 ind/m3) at the center of the bay. Moreover, two individuals of P. marinus nauplii identified by Sazhina, were found in this sample. At the mouth of the bay abundance of the invasive species reached 103 individuals in sample (103 ind/m3). It is considered to be native to the Northwestern Pacific Ocean, but now species is widespread across the world. Brilinski described in details its distribution in the World's oceans. Recently P. marinus has been found in the Atlantic Ocean in the North Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea. P. marinus is a typical estuarine coastal copepod, living in shallow eutrophic inshore waters. It is tolerant to a wide range of salinity (2.5-35 ptt) and temperature (5-28 ºC) and has the highest invasive potential. Thus species is adapted to relatively low salinities and low winter temperatures of the Black Sea. Copepodite stages at both stations indicate the existence of reproducing populations. Thus, very likely P. marinus is the new established species in coastal area of the Black Sea. As other recent pelagic invaders – the copepods Acartia tonsa Dana 1849, Oithona davisae Ferrari F. D. & Orsi 1984; ctenophores Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865 and Beroe ovata Bruguiere, 1789 - P. marinus was most probably brought into Sevastopol Bay in the ballast water of ships. Long-term studies at basin scale are needed to estimate the structural changes in the Black Sea zooplankton community.

From ancient times the dominion of the seas has been a condition for gaining power and influence, and the position of a state near a sea has been an advantage for both its development and the neighboring region.           Due to its geographical position, the Black Sea is a region of great importance for all actors claiming leading positions in the world hierarchy and the intensification of economic relations between the states of the region after the end of the Soviet monopoly and its connection to the world market generated auspices for a new cycle development and regional prosperity.         The relocation of the EU border to the Black Sea, along with the integration of Romania and Bulgaria, brings in many economic benefits, given its dependence on oil imports, but its expansion, like that of NATO, does not only mean benefits. The EU and NATO must also take on vulnerabilities in the area, such as underperforming economies, arms, drug and human trafficking, illegal immigration or frozen conflicts, and thus try to help stabilize the region. In recent years, the military has not only played a destabilizing role, but has made a decisive contribution to ensuring the security of the Black Sea region. In this sense, the military naval forces of the riparian countries, including Romania, had a special role. Through the wide range of missions in which the Romanian Naval Forces participate in the Danubian-Pontic space, both internally and externally, in cooperation with the states bordering the Black Sea and with the NATO member states, Romania contributes to the promotion of regional security and stability. The naval diplomacy actions carried out in the last thirty years thus reveal not only the role and purpose of the Romanian Naval Forces within NATO in the actions of maintaining and consolidating good relations with the states bordering the Black Sea, as well as maintaining security with allies in the distant maritime districts. They also point out that naval diplomacy has contributed to the expression of foreign policy in different areas and with means that have increased its effect, impact and efficiency.

AbstractBurcucumber (Sicyos angulatusL.) is a highly invasive vine that has become naturalized in the humid Black Sea region of Turkey, but previous to this study there was no information on the germination biology of this weed. The germination biology of three naturalized populations ofS. angulatusfrom the Black Sea region was studied in laboratory and greenhouse experiments. The germination of nondormant seeds was observed under different photoperiods, constant temperatures, and varying levels of pH, salinity, and osmotic potential. Furthermore, seedling emergence from various soil depths was investigated. The seeds of all populations proved nonphotoblastic (82% to 90%, 55% to 66%, and 48% to 56% germination under 12-, 24-, and 0-h photoperiod, respectively) and germinated over a wide range of temperatures (5 to 40 C). Seedlings emerged from all seed burial depths (0 to 15 cm); however, germination was drastically reduced (>90% reduction) beyond 6 to 8 cm. Seed germination was 30% to 38% for seeds placed on the surface and increased to 78% to 88% for seeds buried 2 cm deep, while germination was severely reduced for seeds buried 10 and 15 cm deep (8 to 12% and 0 to 6%, respectively). Seeds of all populations were found to be sensitive to osmotic and salinity stress and to highly acidic and alkaline pH levels. All populations had similar requirements for germination that are directly related to their area of naturalization. These results indicate that the species has limited potential for range expansion to arid, semiarid (nonirrigated), and relatively saline areas. However, humid, salinity-free, and frequently irrigated areas of the country are at high risk of invasion. In arable lands, deep tillage followed by shallow tillage and effective management of emerging seedlings could deplete the soil seedbank in the long run. However, there is an urgent need for effective strategies to manage the species in other nonarable areas.

Purpose. The aim of the study is to analyze variability of the statistical moments characterizing deviations of the sea surface elevation distributions from the Gaussian one. Methods and Results. Field studies of the sea waves’ characteristics were carried out from the stationary oceanographic platform located in the Black Sea near the Southern coast of Crimea. The data obtained both in summer and winter, were used. The statistical moments were calculated separately for wind waves and swell. The measurements were performed in a wide range of meteorological conditions and wave parameters (wind speed varied from 0 to 26 m/s, wave age – from 0 to 5.2 and steepness – from 0.005 to 0.095). For wind waves, the coefficients of skewness correlation with the waves’ steepness and age were equal to 0.46 and 0.38. The kurtosis correlation coefficients with these parameters were small (0.09 and 0.07), but with the confidence level 99.8% – significant. For swell, the correlation coefficients were 1.5 – 2.0 times lower. Conclusions. The statistical moments of the sea surface elevations of the third and higher orders are the indicators of the wave field nonlinearity, which should be taken into account when solving a wide range of the applied and fundamental problems. The deviations of the surface elevation distributions from the Gaussian one are not described unambiguously by the waves’ steepness and age. At the fixed values of these parameters, a large scatter in the values of the surface elevations’ asymmetry and kurtosis is observed. This imposes significant limitations on the possibility of applying the nonlinear wave models based on the wave profile expansion by small parameter (steepness) degrees, in engineering calculations.
