Increase in the number of participants who are interested in Off-Roading Trips has contributed to the growth of the local tourism economy of the hill areas of Kerala, but it was found that Off-Roading without any control, would create serious repercussions to the natural environment in the areas. The study focused on the popularity and the significance of Off-Roading Trips in the Hill Areas of Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Wayanad and suggests strategies to be adopted so as to improve sustainable Off-Roading practices in the regions.

Environmental Education in Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism: case study of Serra do Mar State Park, Santa Virgínia Nucleus (SP, Brazil) ABSTRACT This study was conducted in Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Núcleo Santa Virgínia - SP, site of major ecotourism attractions, being the visitation oriented for trekking and rafting, a practice that occurs in Rio Paraibuna, using boats. Visitors are accompanied by monitors, a favorable environment for the conduct of a case study that seeks to analyze quantitative and qualitative the environmental education in ecotourism and adventure tourism. Questionnaires were applied to tourists, semistructured interviews to environmental monitors, rafting operator and the manager of the conservation unit. Participant observations on the trails and rafting were done. The vast majority of visitors is open for environmental education, to practice ecotourism to have contact with nature and learn something new. It was noticed that there is an effort of the management of Santa Virgínia, and monitors to conduct educational practice during the tours, but there is still no clear definition on the part of those about what would be environmental education. The lack of discussion on the subject and the no perception of the potential and the limitations of environmental education in local ecotourism can lead to efforts that do not generate the desired transformations, despite the intrinsic potential of the natural environment to provide changes in view and in individual attitudes. Burdened with debt, the national state withdrew its investment in tourism development in Cusco in the late 1970s. More ominously, the growth of the Maoist Shining Path rebellion and its attacks on travellers nearly brought the tourism economy to collapse by the end of the 1980s. Yet, this chapter also documents the grassroots innovations in Cusco’s tourism economy. As traditional tourists avoided Machu Picchu, expatriates and locals created a new adventure tourism economy based on backpacking and hiking. Using new transnational cultural and travel networks, these efforts reinvented Machu Picchu as an exotic and adventurous site. The neoliberal government of Alberto Fujimori of the 1990s employed the new imagery of Machu Picchu as it sought to attract new private investment into Peru. These efforts brought in a bonanza of new Lima-based and international investors. However, the new state policies provoked local anger who rallied against tourism development perceived as unjust and as a threat to the region’s historical heritage

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council's (WTTC) most recent reports, one in every ten jobs (an estimated 330 million) is influenced if not directly supported by travel and tourism-related activity, making it one of the world's largest economic sectors. Whilst the boundaries that separate adventure tourism from active/sport tourism are blurred, the subject is certainly not lacking in terms of evidence-based definitions, conceptual frameworks, or typologies. This chapter offers a critical overview of the existing body of knowledge that relates to the emergence of a global active and/or adventure-based tourism economy. The authors complement their review of the literature with a case study looking at the ‘home of adventure', Queenstown, New Zealand.

Adventure tourism activities are deeply connected with risk situations. Therefore, adequate risk management has to be a necessary part of this segment of tourism. A nature-based solution is seen as a very effective approach here. Using the form of an autoethnographic case study and feedback from participants’ interviews and mind maps, the article discusses the possibilities that snowshoeing and winter camping provide. This developing sport, recreation, and tourism should be classified as adventure tourism (mode of experiencing) and nature based tourism (traveling to natural environment). Climatic conditions, particularly severe frost, during the 2-week journey in Siberia greatly affected the choices and risk management of the group. Changes in the originally planned route according to weather conditions and possible reduction of risk may become examples of a NBS.

AbstractThe international adventure tourism literature is remarkably silent on the geographical nature of the industry. This study seeks to provide a geographical analysis of the sector within the context of South Africa. The spatial analysis was undertaken by metropolitan area, secondary towns and small towns, using a dataset of adventure tourism enterprises. It was found that the sector is spatially concentrated and highly urbanised, despite the perception that adventure tourism requires ‘wild’ and outdoor spaces. With many adventure tourism enterprises located in South Africa’s metropolitan areas, it is a hither too unknown sub-sector of the South African urban tourism market. Urban settlements with large populations and a strong general tourism sector form a significant support base for adventure tourism operators. Cape Town is the dominant adventure tourism destination, making it the adventure capital of South Africa. A few small settlements were found to be highly dependent upon the sector for survival.

The rapid growth of adventure tourism is remarked all over the world, being considered as a modern form of tourism. This study attempted to investigate the preferences of experienced visitors of Romanian national and natural parks with the main focus on understanding what motives describe the three elements that define adventure tourism: physical activity, natural environment and cultural immersion, and what is the level of satisfaction regarding the quality of facilities and services. An online survey was filled in by 137 members of adventure tourism groups, being further grouped based on their experiences. Results indicate that experienced participants better appreciated the opportunity to be engaged in physical activity and to explore the natural environment. Cultural experience was perceived as similar by both groups. The level of satisfaction about facilities and services provided by the national and natural parks and adjacent rural communities was similar among groups, except for that about the existing information panels. Future development actions should address both groups to enhance their willingness to revisit the areas and increase the attractiveness of tourism in rural areas situated in the neighborhood of parks.

A proposal for ecotourism and adventure tourism circuits as an alternative to development in the municipality of Acari (RN, Brazil) ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to propose ecotourism circuits and adventure tourism in the Açude Gargalheira (Gargalheira dam) region, located in the municipality of Acari, Rio Grande do Norte state (RN), Brazil, in an effort to promote viable socioeconomic development in the region based on the perspective of rational use of natural resources. To that end our efforts went into building an inventory of local tourist attractions. Additionally we surveyed supporting infrastructure and tourism infrastructure in the municipality. Next, we developed a hierarchy of the inventoried tourist attractions so as to establish the potential and significance of each attraction. Our methodology followed that of the Ministry of Tourism – MTUR (2011) which was adapted from the Centro Interamericano de Capacitação Turística (Inter-American Center for Tourism Capacity Building - CICATUR). Furthermore, we analyzed Acari visitor and tourist profiles with the intention of identifying consumer characteristics. Finally, we proposed two tourism circuits which include visitation to five different sites, all of which are located in the valleys that surround the Gargalheira Açude. Within these tourist circuits, various activities are contemplated, including: interpreting the natural environment, walking trails, rappel and rock climbing, and visits to archeological sites. Our results indicate that ecotourism and adventure circuits in the municipality of Acari, (RN, Brazil) are a viable alternative to both the diversification of tourism in the region and local socioeconomic development. AbstractAnselme & Güntürkün generate exciting new insights by integrating two disparate fields to explain why uncertain rewards produce strong motivational effects. Their conclusions are developed in a framework that assumes a random distribution of resources, uncommon in the natural environment. We argue that, by considering a realistically clumped spatiotemporal distribution of resources, their conclusions will be stronger and more complete.

AbstractAs a general theory of extreme self-sacrifice, Whitehouse's article misses one relevant dimension: people's willingness to fight and die in support of entities not bound by biological markers or ancestral kinship (allyship). We discuss research on moral expansiveness, which highlights individuals’ capacity to self-sacrifice for targets that lie outside traditional in-group markers, including racial out-groups, animals, and the natural environment.
