Currently, the problem of sound insulation of protecting designs is quite acute in existing housing stock and newly constructed buildings. Modern wall materials are often used in the model solutions to the barriers without needed additional insulation. In the construction of residential buildings of the increased comfort standard solutions wall enclosing structures should be revised to take account of additional sound insulation ensure the comfort of stay.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze energy performance of the multi-storey buildings built in the city of Tlemcen between 1872 and 2016. Design/methodology/approach A diagnosis based on a bottom-up methodology, using statistical techniques and engineering, has been developed and applied. To do this, demand condition analysis was conducted using a data collection survey on a sample of 100 case studies. Physical characteristics of the buildings have been determined through the archetype by period. This serves to define the strengths and weaknesses of buildings as energy consumers. Findings The obtained results showed that dwellings built between 1872 and 1920 offer better energy performance with a consumption index close to 130kWh/m2/year and this compared to the five periods considered. For dwellings built between 1974 and 1989, energy consumption is higher with an index approaching 300kWh/m2/year, thus qualifying the buildings of this period as energy intensive. Originality/value A database is established to collect physical information on the existing housing stock and thus allow their classification vis-à-vis of the energy label. This study is part of a research project aimed at evaluating and determining optimal measures for energy rehabilitation of multi-family buildings in Tlemcen. Thermal rehabilitation solutions are proposed using thermal simulations, in the following studies, to improve thermal performance of existing buildings. This study constitutes the first step of a roadmap applicable to other cities constituting climatic zones in Algeria. This helps to enrich the Algerian thermal regulation in thermal rehabilitation of existing residential buildings and conception of new ones, in urban areas with a similar climate.

Abstract This paper evaluates the potential energy cost savings when high R-value static insulation layers as well as dynamic insulation materials (DIMs) are applied to residential housing located in Barcelona Spain. The analysis considers three dwelling prototypes to characterize the existing housing stock in Barcelona including detached attached and apartments. In addition three vintages for each housing prototype are defined: before 1979 when building envelope insulation took effect in Spain between 1980 and 2006 and after 2006 when the building envelope insulation code became more restrictive. Using a modified 3R2C network model to determine thermal loads the performance of both static and dynamic insulation systems is evaluated when applied to exterior wall for various housing prototypes in Barcelona. The dynamic insulation R-value is selected based on a 2-step control strategy. The analysis results indicate that DIMs with the largest R-value step (i.e. difference between the high and the low R-values) achieve the highest savings in source energy reaching up to 19% reduction in source heating and cooling energy for the entire housing stock of Barcelona. The annual energy savings achieved by DIMs are valued to be 181 M€/year for the entire existing housing stock in Barcelona. In addition electrical peak demand reduction associated with retrofitting exterior walls for the existing Barcelona housing stock can result in future avoidance of building new power plants and can provide additional 144 M€ and 162 M€ for respectively static and dynamic insulation systems. Considering the current energy mix applying dynamic wall insulation systems for Barcelona existing housing stock could reduce annual CO2 emissions by more than 300 000 tons or 6.80% of the total carbon dioxide currently emitted to heat and cool homes.

In Ukraine, one of the main problems in the field of architecture and construction is an outdated housing stock with low energy efficiency indicators. The total housing stock of Ukraine is 1031.7 million m2, of which more than 4.8 million m2 is an outdated and emergency stock, 11% of residential buildings need repairing, and 9% – reconstruction. Its significant part (72 million m2 or 23%) is morally outdated buildings of the first mass series of 1950−1960, which have a number of structural deficiencies and do not fit to current norms [11]. Most of the existing housing are in the historical environment, therefore, in addition to traditional approaches to the formation of energy-efficient housing, there are special approaches associated with a number of restrictions on the compositional, stylistic, and coloristic integrity to the architectural environment whith increasing energy efficiency of housing. This problem needs to be solved in a complex way, using thermo-modernization, thermo-reconstruction, sanation. An analysis of these approaches has shown that sanationis the most effective, as measures for the rehabilitation of multi-apartment buildings allow to increase energy efficiency of housing and preserve historical architectural heritage within the existing housing stock.

In Korean residential buildings, floor impact sounds were reduced over the past few decades mainly through a floating floor system. However, ceiling constructions for impact sound reduction have not been applied actively because of a lack of useful information. This study focuses on the effects of wall-to-wall supported ceilings (WSC), which are designed with construction discontinuities between concrete slabs and ceilings, and the damping caused by porous absorbers for impact sound insulation. To examine the impact sound insulation according to ceiling conditions, measurements were performed in 25 floor–ceiling assemblies. The results indicate that ceiling treatment is mostly useful in reducing the floor impact sound. The floor impact sound owing to the WSC decreased by 2–7 dB and 2–8 dB in terms of the single number quantity for the tapping machine and rubber balls, respectively, compared with representative existing housing constructions wherein ceilings were attached on wooden sticks. Furthermore, the reduction effect of the WSC appeared to be more profound when it was applied to the floor–ceiling assembly with poor impact sound insulation. Thus, the WSC can be used to enhance the impact of sound insulation of existing housings without major repairs of floor structural layers.

Aging of building stock is emerging. Open Building as a sustainable approach to deal with the problems associated with the aging housing stock is seldom applied in high-rise, densely populated built environment. With aims to identify the constraints and seek rooms for Open Building implementation in aforementioned context, a survey of 495 building layout plans from ten major housing estates in Hong Kong is conducted. The floor plans are analysed against the Open Building characteristics and criteria laid down by Tiuri (1998). Facts and obstacles of achieving Open Building in the territory are unearthed, and opportunities for implementation are then discussed. The layout and structure of the surveyed private residential buildings in Hong Kong are very much alike. They are in fact closed buildings without the capacity to adapt, so any change in user requirements cannot be accommodated easily. Implementing Open Building using flexible and green fittings remains a viable option that enables transformation in existing housing stock.

This paper describes the development of the Residential Energy Model (REEM) for Saudi Arabia using an engineering bottom-up approach. The model can assess energy demand for the current residential building stock and the impact of energy efficiency and demand-side management programs. It accounts for the makeup and features of the Kingdom’s existing housing stock using 54 prototypes of residential buildings defined by three building types, three vintages, and six locations representing different climatic zones.

Serbia’s Law on Planning and Building has imposed the topics of energy efficiency in building sector, requiring adequate policy making and providing a starting point for improvement of the current situation in this field. Considering the fact that there are more than 3.200.000 housing units without any statistical classification a need arose for establishing a national building typology as a starting point for further decision making and appropriate activities definition regarding the existing housing stock. After joining EU TABULA (Typology Approach for Building Stock Energy Assessment) project, methodologies and approaches of the European countries have been analysed providing a common experience, at the same illustrating a need for identification and classification of local characteristics. In order to obtain adequate data a comprehensive survey has been conducted, providing a starting point for creation of typology. The National Typology has identified typical “model” buildings and defined the levels of improvement ranging from standard (according to the current law) to the low-energy level. The paper explains the methodology, procedures and local characteristics of the process and gives an insight in the activity describing the problems and potentials of the approach.

Based on the quantitative analysis and systematic sorting of the research journals on sustainable rural residential construction, this paper summarizes the research progress and development trend of sustainable rural residential construction, analyzes the basic characteristics and common problems of rural residential construction in China at present, and proposes a sustainable construction strategy and research system according to local conditions.

The article analyzes domestic and international experience in the field of energy efficiency and energy security. Thus, it was important to adopt the Law of Ukraine "On the Energy Efficiency of Buildings", which introduced mandatory certification of buildings by energy consumption classes. The study of sources on the issues of effective energy consumption showed that issues related to improving the energy efficiency of buildings and structures are acquiring special relevance; the use of foreign models to improve the energy efficiency of the housing stock. Specific organizational and economic measures are highlighted that will help improve the energy efficiency of the national economy. The Swedish experience of using a modern cost model for the full period of operation ("General Concept") is studied, which aims to assess the economic results of investments in measures to improve the energy efficiency of the housing stock. The main principles of the modern cost model of the full operation period and the criteria for determining the number of necessary energy efficiency measures are considered. Analyzed "hard" (physical condition of the building) and "soft" (user behavior) measures that provide for the integrated energy efficiency of the building. The stages of the analysis according to the cost model of the full operation period are considered. The typical for Sweden ranges of the duration of energy efficient measures and the requirements for the internal rate of return, which depends on the general economic situation in the country and the terms of the loan, have been investigated.  Based on the results of the energy audit of the ten-story building selected for the study and taking into account the experience of Sweden, a number of measures to improve energy efficiency are proposed and a calculation is given to ensure the energy efficiency of a residential building in Ukraine. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that there is a positive trend in this implementation. With the integrated use of all measures that will even allow you to save more, you can significantly improve the energy efficiency of the existing housing stock in Ukraine.
