<p><strong>Purpose:</strong> People, their knowledge, abilities and skills are considered to be the most valuable source every organisation can exploit. It is, therefore, necessary to care about their fair remuneration and continuing development, as well as their objective and fair appraisal. Implementing an effective appraisal system in the personnel strategy, satisfying both employers and employees, is an essential part of the success of all competing organisations. The aim is to evaluate the use of employee appraisal methods in the selected Czech and Slovak organisations, and to recommend proposals for improvement on the grounds of such evaluation.</p><p><strong>Methodology/Approach:</strong> The data were obtained in two quantitative researches conducted in the selected organisations in the Czech Republic (n = 402) and the Slovak Republic (n = 339). Univariate analysis, bivariate analysis and analysis of qualitative traits were employed in order to evaluate results.</p><p><strong>Findings:</strong> The results showed that 58.46% of the interviewed Czech organisations and 69.32% of the Slovak organisations had established a formal system of employee appraisal. Most of them were medium-sized enterprises with an HR department, operating in the private sector.</p><p><strong>Research Limitation/implication:</strong> Limits can be seen in to focus on research in two selected countries, but they have comparable from historical, political and the job market perspectives.</p><strong>Originality/Value of paper:</strong> The article focused on using of modern performance appraisal methods in practice to build the employer’s good brand and attract knowledge workers.

This paper deals with the topical issues of age management and population ageing in the Czech Republic and Europe. The main objective of the paper is to evaluate the importance of individual visions of age management according to Ilmarinen (2006) and Cimbálníková et al. (2012) in organisations in the Czech Republic and to identify factors that influence the implementation of individual visions in the organisation. The primary data (n = 549) was collected by means of a questionnaire technique. The research results have shown that the most important visions are as follows: (1) a fair attitude towards age, (2) knowledge about age issues and (3) a happy life and motivation. In order to evaluate the implementation of age management visions, a factor analysis was performed, on the basis of which two significant factors were identified: (1) organisational culture and (2) job performance and relationships. Based on the research results, organisations are recommended to focus on continuous analysis of their organisational culture, to adapt to changes in their environment, also to implement an effective employee performance appraisal system, and to explore the development of employees and relationships among generations of employees with emphasis on eliminating ageism.

Employee performance appraisal is one of the most important human resource management tools. The first part of the article concentrates on the theoretical background. The second part evaluates the results of the quantitative survey. The aim of the article is to evaluate the use of formal appraisal of employees in agricultural organizations in the Czech Republic and to test dependencies between selected qualitative characteristics. The results of the survey show that only 12.3% of agricultural organizations (n = 332) use formal appraisal of employees. They also confirm that the application of the formal appraisal of employees in agricultural organizations depends on the size of the agricultural organization (p-value 0.006, Phi coefficient 0.151) and the existence of a personnel department (p-value 0.000, Phi coefficient 0.210). 49.1% of agricultural organizations did not consider formal appraisal important. Only 5.8% of agricultural organizations that do not use any system of formal employee performance appraisal plan its implementation, despite the fact that currently people are considered to be the most important strategic asset of any organization for achieving a competitive advantage.

The paper focuses on measuring and quantification of the negative externality of noise pollution generated by freight transport in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic. The paper describes negative impacts and significance of noise externalities, whereas it is established that noise causes psychological and physiological harm to affected persons. A separate part of the paper is dedicated to the current status of the European legislation dealing with the issues of the negative externality of noise pollution, in particular Directive 2002/49/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and Communication COM(2008) 435. The actual measurement of the total, average and marginal costs of noise pollution is implemented in line with the defined methodology and using expert studies defined in the paper. The measurement results show that the costs of the negative externality of noise pollution are high in both countries. According to authors’ calculations, the total costs of the negative externality of noise pollution amount to EUR 100.8 mil in the Czech Republic and EUR 16.9 mil in the Slovak Republic. The paper contains a proposal of internalisation of these costs in the form of performance charges applied to operation of heavy goods vehicles.

This research study is focused on the perception of the role of asocial worker by hospital nurses in the Czech and Slovak Re- public during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim of the study:The main aim of the research study was to find the opinions of nurses from the Czech and Slovak Repub- lic on asocial worker who works in ahospital during acoron- avirus - COVID-19 pandemic and then compare their opinions in helping patients Research sample and setting:The research sample of the study consisted of 75 nurses with higher professional education (Czech Republic), university education of the first and second degree (Czech Republic, Slovak Republic), who were together with social workers in the front line in hospitals at the time of the coronavirus pandemic COVID-19. All participating respon- dents were informed about the purpose of the research study and the completion of the online questionnaire. Statistical analysis:The mathematical-statistical method chi- square test of the independence of the criteria of individual re- search hypotheses was used to compare the interviewed re- spondents in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Results of the study:Medical staff at the time of the COVID- 19 pandemic was satisfied with the social worker, as evidenced by the research study and their answers in the questionnaire survey. It is clear from the results of the research survey that the participants perceived the social worker positively during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scope of the data presented in this study offers a comprehensive view of the issue of the HEI graduates employability in the Czech Republic and also in the Slovak Republic – related to determinants of economic development and their impact on them. This paper examines the impact of gross domestic product, gross domestic expenditure on research and experimental development by only higher education sector and foreign direct investment on HEI graduates employability. The results indicate that correlation between unemployment of tertiary educated Slovaks and GDP, GERD and FDI values was very big. Correlation relationship of similar determinants, except determinant GERD in conditions of the Czech Republic was characterized as weak. On the other hand, significantly stronger (very big to perfect) correlation affecting employment of tertiary educated Czechs regarding to indicators of gross domestic product, gross domestic expenditure on research and experimental development by sector of higher education and foreign direct investments as well. In conditions of the Slovak Republic, correlation relationship between employment of tertiary educated Slovaks and GDP was almost perfect.

The paper deals with the social policy of the European Union, specifically the directive (EU) 2019/1158 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 June 2019 on work-life balance for parents and carers and repealing Council Directive 2010/18/EU. And it is considering the changes that need to be made in the area of labour law, especially concerning the Labour Code, and partially in social security in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, in connection with the requirement to transpose this directive. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the valid legislation of the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in the monitored area. Key words: social policy, European Union, work-life balance, directive, parental leave, paternity leave, carers ́ leave, social security.
