In this paper it is identified and described the environmental aspects and impacts in a treatment plant wastewater. The inputs of raw materials, fuel, electricity and water are taken into account; similarly, the outputs as emissions, noise, discharges and waste, looking comply with environmental legislation and resource management. The most relevant results of the work leading to the qualification of environmental impacts studied for low and middle levels of significance area. The treatment plant wastewater meets its environmental management system, with appropriate controls on environmental impacts both normal and abnormal conditions. Higher level of significance was found in the areas of water pretreatment, but this has an environmental regulation and compliance under national law.

This paper analyses all of the activities carried out by CETREL to establish its Environmental Management System - EMS. This system encompasses all of CETREL's environmental protection efforts: treatment of industrial effluents and residues; environmental monitoring (soil, air, groundwater, rivers and the sea); wildlife preservation programme, environmental education programme, among other activities. CETREL's EMS is a mid-sized system consisting of nearly 425 Instruments (244 Procedures and 181 Work Instructions). The size of the system was selected based on British Standard BS-7750, which provides the principal tools that will allow the organisation to continually maximise beneficial environmental effects while minimising adverse environmental effects. Since the EMS in question is a voluntary one, the result of initiatives taken by CETREL itself, the system's design and architecture were chosen so that the Company's environmental standards would be more stringent than those in the environmental legislation, that is, stricter than the government-mandated environmental requirements.

One of the requirements of ISO 14001 is that the organization must ensure that any person, including personnel working for and on behalf of organization, that have the potential to cause significant environmental impacts is well trained and competent. The personnel competencies can be defined by education, training and/or appropriate experience. In this regard, this paper briefly present requirements and specific documents for proper audit of requirement 4.4.2 that will constitute evidence of practical implementation of SR EN ISO 14001:2005.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was applied to estimate and analyze the environmental impacts from the construction and operation phases of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in the municipality of Lauro de Freitas, Bahia, Brazil. The WWTP process consists of the association of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor followed by four constructed wetlands (CWL) and a disinfection step. The functional unit was defined as one cubic meter of treated effluent during the useful life of this WWTP (20 years). The LCA was carried out using SimaPro® software and the Centre of Environmental Science (CML) assessment method. The environmental impacts during construction phase were mainly from the wooden forms for concrete and the use of reinforcing steel. During the operation phase, the chlorine used as effluent disinfectant caused the greatest impacts in the abiotic depletion and acidification categories. Macronutrient concentrations present in the treated effluent and the methane generated also caused significant environmental impacts during the WWTP’s useful life. The results obtained highlight the importance of the application of a methodology like LCA to assist in decision-making with regard to the implementation, construction and operation of a WWTP.

The development of oil palm plantations and its expansion as well, ensured potentially give impact on the environment. A standardized environmental management system is required by companies to develop and implement environmental aspects. This research is classified as a qualitative research with a case study which emphasizes potential environmental impacts analysis of oil palm plantations and the urgency of environmental management systems in oil palm plantation management policies in North Sumatra. The research results showed that there were potential environmental impacts began pre-construction, construction and operational stages related to oil palm plantations development such as erosion, changes of sustainable and quantity of water, plant pests distribution, diseases and weeds, changes in soil fertility, potential social conflicts and the emergence of the spread of plant diseases endemic and disruption of water infiltration function in peat areas. In addition, it affected environmental factors including ecosystem condition, hydrology, landscape, and resident’s attitude around the plantation. Alternative policies which be carried out related to environmental preservation and community welfare are (1) agro-industrial development policies that process oil and palm oil waste, (2) Moratorium (temporary suspension) of illegal logging, (3) Establish policy synergies and improve communication between government agencies and institutions, (4) reduce conflicts over land freehold by reforming above the law.

The results of the biological wastewater treatment facilities of the paper factory using raw materials of different kinds (waste paper and pulp) are analyzed. The main performance characteristics of these structures (oxidative capacity for organic pollution and cleaning efficiency) at different loads on them have been determined. Recommendations have been worked out to improve the performance and efficiency of the treatment plant.

The article substantiates the need to integrate environmental aspects in a balanced scorecard (BSC) to improve the efficiency of environmental management system at chemical plants. For environmental management, the balanced scorecard serves as a convenient management tool that is able to provide relevant and timely information on the environmental aspects of the refinery.

The article deals with the problem of efficient use of water resources. Factors affecting wastewater treatment and the problem of waste disposal have been identified. It has been established that economic methods should be coordinated with the environmental state in order to rationally manage water resources. The purpose: to reduce the negative environmental burden on water resources by choosing a rational method for the disposal of wastewater sediment. Studies include an analysis of existing methods of wastewater treatment and disposal of sludge. It has been established that the use of the technology for the most complete processing of sewage sludge,utilization of sludge to obtain raw materials for recycling can significantly reduce operating costs. It is accepted as the optimal method to consider the technology of utilization by glazing the sediment, allowing obtaining a granular fraction of raw materials used in the construction industry. An example of the practical implementation of the technology of glazing dehydrated sit cake is presented by a pilot installation at the Shchelkovsite of the sewer treatment plant, as a result of which the amount of wastewater sediment was reduced by almost 25 times.
