This article introduces a method to calculate contours of form cutters for machining helical gears from given gear tooth profiles. It is essential to find a relationship between the cutter contour and the gear profile in order to carry out the calculation. The method introduced in this article uses contact points between the cutter rotary surface and the gear tooth surface to establish the relationship. A minimum distance principle is applied. Equations for the calculation are derived and an example is given.

In order to find the temperature field in the ground with a heat exchanger, it is necessary to determine temperature responses of the ground caused by heat sources and the influence of the environment. To determine the latter, a new model of heat transfer in the ground under natural conditions was developed. The heat flux of the evaporation of moisture from the ground was described by the relationship taking into account the annual amount of rainfall. The analytical solution for the equations of this model is presented. Under the conditions for which the calculations were performed, the following data were obtained: the average ground surface temperature Tsm = 10.67 °C, the ground surface temperature amplitude As = 13.88 K, and the phase angle Ps = 0.202 rad. This method makes it possible to easily determine the undisturbed ground temperature at any depth and at any time. This solution was used to find the temperature field in the ground with an installed slinky-coil heat exchanger that consisted of 63 coils. The results of calculations according to the presented model were compared with the results of measurements from the literature. The 3D model for the ground with an installed heat exchanger enables the analysis of the influence of miscellaneous parameters of the process of extracting or supplying heat from/to the ground on its temperature field.

The paper is devoted to highlighting the potential application of the quantitative imaging technique through results associated with work hardening, strain rate and heat generated during elastic and plastic deformation. The aim of the research presented in this article is to determine the relationship between deformation in the uniaxial tensile test of samples made of 1-mm-thick nickel-based superalloys and their change in temperature during deformation. The relationship between yield stress and the Taylor–Quinney coefficient and their change with the strain rate were determined. The research material was 1-mm-thick sheets of three grades of Inconel alloys: 625 HX and 718. The Aramis (GOM GmbH, a company of the ZEISS Group) measurement system and high-sensitivity infrared thermal imaging camera were used for the tests. The uniaxial tensile tests were carried out at three different strain rates. A clear tendency to increase the sample temperature with an increase in the strain rate was observed. This conclusion applies to all materials and directions of sample cutting investigated with respect to the sheet-rolling direction. An almost linear correlation was found between the percent strain and the value of the maximum surface temperature of the specimens. The method used is helpful in assessing the extent of homogeneity of the strain and the material effort during its deformation based on the measurement of the surface temperature.

The teeth of ordinary spur and helical gears are generated by a (virtual) rack provided with planar generating surfaces. The resulting tooth surface shapes are a circle-involute cylinder in the case of spur gears, and a circle-involute helicoid for helical gears. Advantages associated with involute geometry are well known. Beveloid gears are often regarded as a generalization of involute cylindrical gears involving one additional degree-of-freedom, in that the midplane of their (virtual) generating rack is inclined with respect to the axis of the gear being generated. A peculiarity of their generation process is that the motion of the generating planar surface, seen from the fixed space, is a rectilinear translation (while the gear blank is rotated about a fixed axis); the component of such translation that is orthogonal to the generating plane is the one that ultimately dictates the shape of the generated, envelope surface. Starting from this basic fact, we set out to revisit this type of generation-by-envelope process and to profitably use it to explore peculiar design layouts, in particular for the case of motion transmission between skew axes (and intersecting axes as a special case). Analytical derivations demonstrate the possibility of involute helicoid profiles (beveloids) transmitting motion between skew axes through line contact and, perhaps more importantly, they lead to the derivation of designs featuring insensitivity of the transmission ratio to all misalignments within relatively large limits. The theoretical developments are confirmed by various numerical examples.

Abstract This study proposes a modification of the Matsumoto equation using a directional parameter of tooth surfaces to adapt various gear finishing processes. The directional parameters of a contact surface, which affect oil film formations, have been discussed in the field of tribology; but this effect has been undetermined on the meshing gear tooth surfaces having directional machining marks. Thus, this paper investigates the relationship between the gear frictional coefficients and the directional parameters (based on ISO25178) of their tooth surfaces with the various finishing processes; and modifies the Matsumoto equation by introducing a new directional parameter to augment the various gear finishing processes. Our findings indicate that through optimizing the coefficient of the correction term the include the new directional parameter, the calculated friction values using the modified Matsumoto equation correlate more highly to the experimental friction values than that using the unmodified Matsumoto equation.
