Most hydrostatic pumps and motors apply mechanical face seals, often also acting as a thrust bearing. The load carrying capacity of these bearings is very much dependent on the pressure profile generated in the sealing gap. Previous research, outside pumps and motors, has already shown that the gap pressure profile is largely influenced by small radial deformations of the seal lands. This paper discusses the elastic deformation of pump components and the effects of these deformations on the load carrying capacity of a barrel in an axial piston machine.

The influence of eccentricity at intersections of truss members on the load carrying capacity of the truss joint is presented in the paper. The research truss elements were designed as cold-formed open cross section. Analytical calculations, numerical analysis and experimental research were conducted to reveal how the eccentricity affects the effort of material in the joint area. The results of analysis and investigations are compared and discussed. The main achievement of the tests carried out is statement that slender plane members of the compression chords are safe compared with the results of analytical calculations.

Composite slab with steel sheeting deck is considered a continuous slab when it is under a constructional situation. Nevertheless, many recent researches are focused on simply supported slab. In order to determine the load carrying capacity regarding various rebar ratio on negative moment region, a numerical analysis was carried out by using finite element analysis. The result of analysis shows that the reinforced steel rebar increases load carrying capacity. Moreover, it has shown that the reinforced length of steel rebar also affect the load carrying capacity.

Thrust load transmission at the contact areas of roller ends and flanges occurs under conditions of pure sliding. Recent theoretical and experimental investigations showed that with adequately designed roller ends and flanges and with a satisfactory lubricant high thrust loads can be accommodated over a wide speed range with fully hydrodynamic lubrication. The conventional methods used for the determination of the safe thrust load should be revised and supplemented. Oil viscosity should be introduced as an important parameter. Contrary to present opinion the hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity at the flange increases with increasing speed. This new knowledge broadens the application range of radial cylindrical roller bearings.

A simple procedure is proposed for predicting the limiting pressure and corresponding limiting of the load-carrying capacity of a foil thrust bearing. A closed-form analytical solution for the limiting load is derived, and the predictions are verified by the numerical solution. An approximate solution for limiting thrust load is also obtained and compared to the value obtained through the analytical solution. A parametric analysis is performed to examine the dependency of the limiting load on different geometric parameters for the bearing.
