Organizational Supports to Promote the Community Integration of People With Dual Diagnosis

Abstract One of the most common reasons people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) return to institutions is because of maladaptive behaviors. This study's aim was to examine the impact organizational supports can have on the community outcomes of people with dual diagnosis—those with IDD and psychiatric disabilities. We analyzed secondary Personal Outcome Measures interview data from 533 people with dual diagnosis. Findings revealed people with dual diagnosis were significantly more likely to have community outcomes present when they received individualized organizational supports. In addition, we found a number of disparities in organizational supports, including related to guardianship, communication method, and residence type. A more robust service system is necessary to ensure people with dual diagnosis are integrated into their communities.

Abstract Despite physically relocating into the community, many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) fail to be meaningfully included in the community. The Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Settings Rule was introduced to expand community integration, person-centered services, and choice. The aim of this exploratory study is to examine the potential impact of HCBS Settings Rule implementation, specifically by examining how the presence of HCBS Settings Rule outcomes impact three areas of health and safety. We analyzed secondary Personal Outcome Measures data relating to the HCBS Settings Rule, and emergency room visits, abuse and neglect, and injuries data from 251 people with IDD. Findings indicate a clear need to improve HCBS Settings Rule related areas of people's lives.

In this meta-analytic review, we investigated the effects of technology supports on the acquisition of shopping skills for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) between the ages of 5 and 24. Nineteen single-case experimental research studies, presented in 15 research articles, met the current study’s inclusion criteria and the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) standards. An analysis of potential moderators was conducted, and we calculated effect sizes using Tau-U to examine the impact of age, diagnosis, and type of technology on the reported outcomes for the 56 participants. The results from the included studies provide evidence that a wide range of technology interventions had a positive impact on shopping performance. These positive effects were seen for individuals across a wide range of ages and disability types, and for a wide variety of shopping skills. The strongest effect sizes were observed for technologies that provided visual supports rather than just auditory support. We provide an interpretation of the findings, implications of the results, and recommended areas for future research.

BACKGROUND: While the health and economic impact of COVID-19 is becoming better known among the general population, little is known about the impact of the pandemic and recession on employees with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent recession on individuals with IDD. METHODS: The present paper described the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and recession on the employment status, hours worked, and hourly wage of 156 individuals with IDD who work in competitive integrated employment for February to July 2020. These findings are compared with a similar group receiving services from the same agency in February to July 2019. RESULTS: Findings indicate that these employees were not able to work from home and experienced furlough or lay off instead. Further, the number of hours worked monthly was also significantly affected. Wages were not affected by the pandemic and recession. Employees in some industries, notably health care and distribution and supplies, were less affected than employees in other industries like food service, retail, and entertainment. Finally, and surprisingly, black, indigenous, and other people of color worked more hours monthly than their white peers in both 2019 and 2020. CONCLUSION: Implications of these findings are discussed.

The purpose of this study (1) The factors that cause speech delay in early childhood (2) The treatment given by Permata Diakonia and parents? (3) The impact of speech therapy performed by Permata Diakonia using the AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) method. Methods: This study used a case study method with one child data analysis used qualitative data analysis with Miles and Huberman methods. Results: Sensory therapy that was given every day since the child was diagnosed late speaking had a very significant impact on the child's environmental response. A good response to this environment is a sign that the child can be given speech therapy using the AAC method which is given twice a week. From this study, it can be concluded that speech therapy using the AAC method significantly improves children's speaking ability. It should be noted that the key to success in this therapy is not changing therapists. Implication: speech therapy using the AAC method has implications for new ideas that will give  new ideas to new approaches to enrich speech therapy.Keywords: speech delay, sensory integration therapy, and speech therapy, AAC

This paper details an institutional ethnography conducted in Constance Lake First Nation, a rural Oji-Cree community in northern Ontario, Canada. The study is a part of a larger project called the Inclusive Early Childhood Service System Project, which is partnered with several municipalities and service organizations in four communities across Ontario. The current project examined six family narratives of accessing disability support services for young children. The project seeks to understand how the service system functions from the perspective of families, and the impact of institutional interactions on families within the service system. Employing critical disability theory and Indigenous perspectives of child development, the study seeks to develop a culturally-based conceptualization of disability support for Indigenous children with disabilities or gifts.
