“I Don’t Want Them to Be like Me”: Discourses of Inferiority and Language Shift in Upper Necaxa Totonac

AbstrakPenelitian ini berjudul “Pergeseran Bahasa Sunda dalam Leksikon Makanan Tradisional Sunda di Kabupaten Bandung dalam Perspektif Sosiolinguistik Mikro”. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menjelaskan bentuk-bentuk perubahan dan inovasi bahasa dalam leksikon-leksikon makanan tradisional Sunda yang menjadi faktor penentu terjadinya pemertahanan atau pergeseran suatu bahasa. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif-deskriptif. Sumber data pada penelitian ini berupa leksikon-leksikon makanan tradisional di Kabupaten Bandung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) bahasa Sunda dalam leksikon makanan tradisional Sunda sebagian besar telah mengalami inovasi; (2) gejala perubahan bentuk dari leksikon-leksikon makanan tradisional Sunda adalah inovasi leksikal penuh, inovasi fonetis, dan inovasi morfemis; (3) bahasa Sunda di Kabupaten Bandung dalam konsep makanan tradisional Sunda telah mengalami pergeseran bahasa secara sosiolinguistik mikro, mengingat faktor-faktor internal bahasa, yaitu berupa inovasi, telah terjadi. Inovasi tersebut meliputi inovasi leksikal penuh, inovasi fonologis, dan inovasi morfemis. Faktor-faktor internal bahasa ini menjadi faktor utama pemertahanan dan pergeseran bahasa.Kata kunci: pergeseran bahasa, makanan tradisional, sosiolinguistik mikroAbstractThe article is entitled "The shifting of Sundanese Language in Lexiconsof Sundanese Food in Bandung Regency studied by Micro Sociolinguistics". The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of change and linguistic innovation in the lexiconsof Sundanesetraditional food which become the determining factor of a language retention or shift. The methods used in this research is descriptive-qualitative method. The data source on this research are lexicons of Sundanese traditional foods in Bandung Regency. The results show that (1) Sundanese Language in the lexiconsof Sundanese Food in the majority hasundergone an innovation; (2) the morphemic change phenomemaof theSundanese traditional food lexicons consist of the full lexical innovation, innovation, innovation and phonetic morfemis; (3) There has been a shift in Sundanese language micro-sociolinguistically regarding the lexiconsof Sundanese traditional food in Bandung Regency based on internal factors of language, i.e. in the form of innovation. These innovations include the full lexical innovation, phonological innovation, and innovation morfemis. Language is known to have an effect on ethnic identity.For cultural groups who hold knowledge of ethnic language as a core value, language shift can lead to a loss of ethnic identity, cultural fragmentation and “non-authentic” expressions of ethnicity Thelanguage has played and is still playing a symbolic role in the evolution and maintenance of ethnic identity within the Malay Muslim community in southern Thailand. Itis significant to know how the Malay language was used as a symbol to create and sustain the Malay identity on the ways in which Malay Muslims today understand ethnic identity, and how ethnic language fits into their own ethnic self-identifications.This paper attempts to answer the question why Malay language constitutes a vital element in the maintenance of Malay ethnic identity among the Malays of southern Thailand.Two facts have been identified regarding the language and ethnicity link among Malay Muslims. First, Malay language is seen as a relevant ethno-cultural marker and its usage is limited within family, relatives and close friends. Second, Malay language is preserved along with Thai language, making many Malay Muslims bilingual, which is quite typical in the southern border provinces of Thailand.

In sociolinguistics, there is a phenomenon in which a community stops using their parent’s heritage language by making the use of the language in which they are located or stay as a mean of communication, it is called as a language shift. In this research, it aims to find out the factors that affected the students whose parents originated from Sunda not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language. Moreover, it aims to find out the most dominant factor that affected the students not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language. This research used the qualitative method and the data source comes from the students of English literature in Universitas Gunadarma. The result of this research shows the factors that affected the students not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language such as social, economic, and political factor, demographic factor, attitudes and values factors, education factor, migration factor, and bilingual or multilingual factors. Furthermore, education factor is assumed as the most dominant or influential factor to the students not interested to learn their parent’s heritage language, because all of the students choose agree to the education factor.

Vietnam represents a country with 54 ethnic groups; however, the majority (88%) of the population are of Vietnamese heritage. Some of the other ethnic groups such as Tay, Thai, Muong, Hoa, Khmer, and Nung have a population of around 1 million each, while the Brau, Roman, and Odu consist only of a hundred people each. Living in northern Vietnam, close to the Chinese border (see Figure 1), the Tay people speak a language of the Central Tai language group called Though, T'o, Tai Tho, Ngan, Phen, Thu Lao, or Pa Di. Tay remains one of 10 ethnic languages used by 1 million speakers (Buoi, 2003). The Tày ethnic group has a rich culture of wedding songs, poems, dance, and music and celebrate various festivals. Wet rice cultivation, canal digging and grain threshing on wooden racks are part of the Tày traditions. Their villages situated near the foothills often bear the names of nearby mountains, rivers, or fields. This study discusses the status and role of the Tày language in Northeast Vietnam. It discusses factors, which have affected the habitual use of the Tay language, the connection between language shift and development and provides a model for the sustainability and promotion of minority languages. It remains fundamentally imperative to strengthen and to foster positive attitudes of the community towards the Tày language. Tày’s young people must be enlightened to the reality their Tày non-usage could render their mother tongue defunct, which means their history stands to be lost.

AbstractThis article considers the case of Cornish, a Celtic language that was in decline in the south-west of Great Britain from the early medieval era until the end of the eighteenth century, when its last recorded native speakers died out. At the point when a language under pressure eventually succumbs to forces of language shift, its role in representations of a distinct sociocultural identity might be expected to die with the medium itself. Yet a sense of cohesion at the group level has been observed to endure long after a shift to another language has occurred, with the obsolescent variety retaining a role in the maintenance of group boundaries. In situations of language shift, the meanings of such social constructions can change considerably, and the obsolescent variety may retain ideological associations with the group as an iconized symbol of identity. The analysis presented in this paper is based on an examination of the historical record as well as a synthesis of recent sociological research on Cornish. Attention will be drawn specifically to the manner in which the language has functioned as an icon of identity since the nadir of its decline as a spoken vernacular, through the ‘Cornish Revival’ of the twentieth century to the present day.
