ABSTRACTAlthough frost occurrence causes severe losses in agriculture, especially in the south of Brazil, the data of minimum air temperature (Tmin) currently available for monitoring and predicting frosts show insufficient spatial distribution. This study aimed to evaluate the MDY11A1 (LST – Land Surface Temperature) product, from the MODIS sensor on board the AQUA satellite as an estimator of frost occurrence in the southeast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. LST images from the nighttime overpass of the MODIS/AQUA sensor for the months of June, July and August from 2006 to 2012, and data from three conventional weather stations of the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) were used. Consistency was observed between Tmin data measured in weather stations and LST data obtained from the MODIS sensor. According to the results, LSTs below 3 ºC recorded by the MODIS/AQUA sensor are an indication of a favorable scenario to frost occurrence.

إن التغير المناخي هو اختلال في مناخ الأرض مع ارتفاع درجة حرارة الكوكب و تغير كبير في طبيعة الظواهر المناخية و تدهور مستمر للغطاء النباتي و للتنوع البيئي. وبسبب تزايد تدفق الملوثات البيئية و الغازات الدفيئة نحو الغلاف الجوي ازداد خطر ظاهرة الإحتباس الحراري، مما أدى إلى ارتفاع درجة حرارة الأرض فبدأت الثلوج القطبية بالذوبان مسببة ارتفاع منسوب مياه البحر و المحيطات مما يشكل خطراً كبيراً للبشرية. و هذا ما دفع الكثير من الباحثين لدراسة التغيرات الحرارية التي تحدث في الغلاف الجوي. و في هذا البحث قمنا بدراسة تغيرات درجات الحرارة فوق حلب التي تقع شمال غرب سورية خلال الفترة الزمنية 2003-2016 باستخدام مسبار الأشعة تحت الحمراء AIRS المثبت على متن القمر الصناعي Aqua Satellite و قد تم إطلاق هذا القمر في عام 2002 و هو مخصص لمراقبة مناخ الأرض. و قد أظهرت نتائج الدراسة لمدة 14 فوق حلب زيادة واضحة في درجات الحرارة 0.5 C. وقد بلغت درجات الحرارة أكبر قيمة لها 23.76 C في عام 2010.كما أظهرت التغيرات الشهرية لدرجات الحرارة فوق حلب أن القيمة العظمى لدرجات الحرارة كانت في شهر تموز 35.09 C أما القيم الصغرى كانت في شهري كانون الأول و كانون الثاني 10.27 C .

Abstract. Large chlorophyll anomalies are observed after the 2011 Japanese tsunami using the NASA MODIS instrument onboard the TERRA and AQUA satellites. These anomalies are observed both along the eastern coast of Japan, where the tsunami wave hit with maximum force, and in the deep water surrounding the epicentral region. Although both satellites show agreeing spatio-temporal patterns, larger anomalies are detected using the AQUA satellite. A temporal analysis shows increased chlorophyll concentrations immediately after the tsunami, and higher values are observed for nearly one month before reversing to pre-tsunami levels.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of several spectral indices, used on moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) images, in identifying drought events in sugarcane. Images of Terra and Aqua satellites were used to calculate the spectral indices, using visible (red), near infrared, and shortwave infrared bands, and eight indices were selected: NDVI, EVI2, GVMI, NDI6, NDI7, NDWI, SRWI, and MSI. The indices were calculated using images between October and April of the crop years 2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10, and 2013/14. These indices were then correlated with the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI), calculated for 1, 3, and 6 months. Four of them had significant correlations with SPEI: GVMI, MSI, NDI7, and NDWI. Spectral indices from Modis sensor on board the Aqua satellite (MYD) were more suited for drought detection, and March provided the most relevant indices for that purpose. Drought indices calculated from Modis sensor data are effective for detecting sugarcane drought events, besides being able to indicate seasonal fluctuations.

Abstract. Accurate calibration of satellite imagers is a prerequisite for using their measurements in climate applications. Here we present a method for the inter-calibration of geostationary and polar-orbiting imager solar channels based on regressions of collocated near-nadir radiances. Specific attention is paid to correcting for differences in spectral response between instruments. The method is used to calibrate the solar channels of the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on the geostationary Meteosat satellite with corresponding channels of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the polar-orbiting Aqua satellite. The SEVIRI operational calibration is found to be stable during the years 2004 to 2009 but off by −8, −6, and +3.5% for channels 1 (0.6 μm), 2 (0.8 μm), and 3 (1.6 μm), respectively. These results are robust for a range of choices that can be made regarding data collocation and selection, as long as the viewing and illumination geometries of the two instruments are matched. Uncertainties in the inter-calibration method are estimated to be 1% for channel 1 and 1.5% for channels 2 and 3. A specific application of the method is the inter-calibration of polar imagers using SEVIRI as a transfer instrument. This offers an alternative to direct inter-calibration, which in general has to rely on high-latitude collocations. Using this method we have tied MODIS-Terra and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instruments on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites 17 and 18 to MODIS-Aqua for the years 2007 to 2009. While reflectances of the two MODIS instruments differ less than 2% for all channels considered, deviations of an existing AVHRR calibration from MODIS-Aqua reach −3.5 and +2.5% for the 0.8 and 1.6 μm channels, respectively.

This work studies the dust clouds microphysical properties from the Pampa and the Patagonia region. This kind of events occurred regularly during the dry season of 2008. It analyzes in particular the episode that occurred on March 28th, 2009 by means of a sunphotometer from the AERONET global network administrated by NASA, and radiometer both located at the “Laboratorio de Física de la Atmósfera, Facultad de Ingeniería, Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia” (43,2° S, 65,3° O, 15,0 m), at Trelew, in Chubut. The geographical extent of this event was evidenced by the AQUA satellite images. An aerosol characterization shows a SSA of 0.9 and an aerosol optical thickness of 0.8 measured at 440 nm. This means an effective direct sun radiation blocking factor of 50% in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
