Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) combined with multivariate statistical analysis was applied to differentiate and identify Shigella sonnei and Escherichiacoli O157: H7. FTIR absorption spectra from 4000-600 cm-1 were collected from sampling 10 μL of bacterial suspention. The spectra between 1800 and 900 cm-1 highlighted the most distinctive variations and were the most useful for characterizing the selected microorganisms. Spectra of the two bacteria were noticeably segregated with distinct clustering by principal component analysis (PCA). Further more, another cluster model of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was established and could also gave a good separation between the two bacteria. These results demonstrate that FTIR technology has considerable potential as a rapid, accurate and simple method for differentiating and identifying bacteria.

Three solvents of different polarities (water, methanol and 1% NaOHsolution) were used to extract dyes that produced different shades fromdried sunflower (Helianthus annuus) petal. The extraction proceduresusing different solvent types were carried out separately. The dye extractswere thereafter subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry(FT-IR) analysis for characterization in terms of functional groups. Theintensities of the extracted dyes on the shade of colours obtained on piecesof cotton material varied from yellow in methanolic extract to light yellowin aqueous and black in 1% NaOH solution extracts. The results obtainedfrom the FT-IR analysis revealed the presence of several useful functionalgroups such as N-H, C=H, O-H and C=O in the extracts.

The reactions of propanal and pentanal with 2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry/attenuated total reflectance in both the solution phase and at the gas/solid interface. The reactions were studied with the use of a flow-through cylindrical internal reflection (“circle”) cell. Reaction intermediates were tentatively identified by their characteristic infrared absorption frequencies. At the gas/solid interface the reaction is thought to yield a hemiaminal intermediate. In the solution phase a hemiaminal intermediate is believed to form initially, followed by loss of water to generate an enamine product. In both gas-phase and solution-phase studies, an oxazolidine product is prepared only after an ultrasound treatment. The FT-IR/ATR technique reveals detailed mechanistic information concerning reactions between aldehydes and ethanol amines.
