Abstract Objectives Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of abnormalities including abdominal obesity that increases risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. MetS affects ∼10% of US adolescents, but more may be at risk. The MetS severity z-score (MetS-z) is a continuous measure that may be useful for indicating MetS risk. Preventing at-risk adolescents from developing MetS may be achievable through changes in lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity. Our objective was to evaluate the relationship of lifestyle-related factors with MetS-z in adolescents. Methods We performed a cross-sectional analysis of adolescents (12 to 19 y) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2016. MetS-z was calculated from sex- and race-specific equations developed for adolescents. Sagittal Abdominal Diameter (SAD, representing abdominal visceral fat) was obtained using NHANES standard procedures. Dietary intake was estimated via two 24-hour diet recall interviews and used to calculate the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015 total (range 0–100) and component scores (range 0–10) indicating diet quality. Physical activity (PA, minutes/week of voluntary moderate or vigorous exercise) was reported by participants to trained interviewers and used to determine adherence to national PA guidelines of at least 60 min/day. Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate the relationship of HEI scores, SAD and physical activity with MetS-z. Results Sample size was 1291 (49% female, 50% white) adolescents. Means (SEM) were: Age, 15.4 y (0.09); BMI z-score, 0.63 (0.04); MetS-z, −0.08 (0.03); SAD, 18.3 cm (0.14); and HEI score, 47.4 (0.46). Median min/week of PA was 178.5, with 30.4% of adolescents meeting PA guidelines. The final model (R2 = 0.53) included age, SAD (β = 0.17, P < 0.0001), HEI score (β = −0.003, P = 0.09), and physical activity (β = −0.005, P = 0.69). Conclusions US adolescents consume a poor-quality diet and less than half meet physical activity guidelines, yet as a group they have a MetS z-score <0, indicating low overall risk. SAD had a significant, positive association with MetS-z. While physical activity and diet were not significant in the model, results suggest the need for improvement of overall diet quality to potentially reduce risk of MetS and related chronic diseases in youth. AbstractObjectivesLiterature shows a high prevalence of MetS among Malaysians, varying across major ethnicities. As sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors and diet habits of such communities have been reported to be diverse, the study objective was to investigate the association of various sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors and diet habits on MetS overall and among the three major ethnic communities in Malaysia.Materials and MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study among 481 Malaysians of age 18 years and above living in Johor, Malaysia. Information on demographics, lifestyle and diet habits was collected using a structured questionnaire. MetS was diagnosed among the subjects using the Harmonized criteria. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyse associations between sociodemographic and lifestyle factors and dietary behaviours with MetS.ResultsMetS was found among 32.2% of the respondents, more prevalent among the Indians (51.9%), followed by Malays (36.7%) and Chinese (20.2%). Overall, increasing age (AOR=2.44[95%CI=1.27-4.70] at 40-49 years vs. AOR=4.14[95%CI=1.97-8.69] at 60 years and above) and Indian ethnicity (AOR=1.95[95%CI=1.12-3.38)] increased, while higher education (AOR = 0.44[95%CI = 0.20-0.94] reduced the odds of MetS in this population. Quick finishing of meals (AOR=2.17[95%CI=1.02-4.60]) and low physical activity (AOR=4.76[95%CI=1.49-15.26]) was associated with an increased odds of MetS among the Malays and Chinese, respectively.ConclusionThe population in Johor is diverse in these factors, and some of these are associated with MetS in certain ethnicities. In light of such differences, ethnic specific measures are needed to reduce the prevalence of MetS in this population.

AbstractThis paper surveys the history of anthropological work on Burma, dealing both with Burman and other ethnic groups. It focuses upon the relations between anthropology and other disciplines, and upon the relationship of such work to the development of anthropological theory. It tries to show how anthropology has contributed to an overall understanding of Burma as a field of study and, conversely, how work on Burma has influenced the development of anthropology as a subject. It also tries to relate the way in which anthropology helps place Burma in the broader context of Southeast Asia.

Background:Dengue infection is associated with joints pain mimicking disease onset symptom of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, there is lack of epidemiological studies on exposure to dengue infection and risk of future RA.Objectives:We investigated the relationship between exposure to dengue infection and risk of developing different subsets of RA, defined by the presence of anti-citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA) in the multi-ethnic Malaysian population.Methods:Serum samples from 1,235 RA cases (i.e. 516 Malay, 254 Chinese, 405 Indians and 60 others/mixed-ethnicity) and 1,624 epidemiological matched population-based controls (i.e. 1,023 Malay, 208 Chinese, 297 Indians and 96 others/mixed-ethnicity) were assayed for presence of dengue IgG antibody using World Health Organization recommended ELISA kits. Positive results of dengue IgG antibodies indicates previous exposure to dengue infection(s). We performed chi-square and Mann-Whitney U analysis to determine the association of ever-exposed dengue infection with ACPA-positive/ACPA-negative RA and to investigate the antibody frequency and levels among the studied populations.Results:We observed high occurrence of dengue IgG antibody in the overall RA cases (79.7%) and matched controls (77.3%), with no significant differences detected between the ACPA subsets of RA. Ethnicity stratification analysis revealed a decrease risk of developing ACPA-positive RA in the Indian patients with positive dengue IgG antibody (OR=0.59, 95% CI=0.37-0.94, p=0.03), and in particular patients with elevated level of dengue IgG antibody (OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.25-0.78, p<0.05). On the other hand, the significant decrease mean levels of dengue IgG antibody were observed in the ACPA-positive RA subset for all three major ethnic groups (i.e. Malay, p<0.0001, Chinese, p<0.01 and Indian<0.05) (Figure 1).
