Eight female patients with rapid cycling mood disorders (at least four discrete affective episodes per year) were examined from a clinical perspective. Assessment suggested several different etiologies to the rapid cycling pattern in these patients. These included that the rapid mood swings were: a natural expression of the affective disorder, tricyclic induced, a result of frequent medication changes and/or poor medication compliance, and a combination of the aforementioned etiologies. All patients were helped significantly with treatment. Treatment was individualized for each patient's unique illness and possible etiological factors in the rapid cycling. Treatment strategies and guidelines include: i) A psychotherapeutic approach involving the patient and his family which emphasizes the lengthy nature of treatment before expected results; ii) The necessity of rigorous drug adherence, in) The sole use of “high dose” lithium therapy (> 1.2 MEQ/L) in some patients, and the consideration of “high dose” lithium in conjunction with tricyclics, MAO inhibitors or “adjuvant” medication in certain bipolar II patients; iv) The discontinuation of tricyclics in bipolar l rapid cyclers;v) The combination of lithium salts and carbamazepine or the use of carbamazepine alone in selected patients.

From the fundamental studies of Louis Pasteur in the XIX century to the current genomic analysis, the essential role of microorganisms in winemaking industry is well recognised. In the last decades, selected Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with excellent fermentative behaviour have been widely commercialised in form of active dry yeasts. Currently, the production of organic and “natural” wines represents a new economically relevant trend in the wine sector. Based on this market demand, the use of industrial yeast starter could be perceived as non-organic practice and then, rejected. However, in order to preserve wines sensory quality, healthiness, and to avoid organoleptic defects given by undesirable microorganisms, the “yeast factor” (S. cerevisiae or non-Saccharomyces) cannot be ignored. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the methods of selection of wine yeasts focusing the attention on indigenous S. cerevisiae strains. In fact, the use of ecotypic yeasts may represent a good compromise between the needs of microbiologically controlled fermentation and a modern vision of wine as natural expression of its “terroir”, also from the microbiological point of view.

Angiogenesis is a critical step in the development of ectopic lesions during endometriosis. Although total vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) A is elevated in the peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis, there are contradictory reports on how levels of total endometrial VEGFA are altered in this disease. Furthermore, limited research is available on different VEGFA isoforms in women with endometriosis. Thus, the aim of the present study was to analyse levels of various VEGFA isoforms in women with and without endometriosis at different stages of the menstrual cycle. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that total VEGFA was highest during menstruation in endometriosis compared with controls (P = 0.0373). VEGF121 and VEGF189 were similarly highest during menstruation in endometriosis compared with controls (P = 0.0165 and 0.0154 respectively). The present study is also the first to identify the natural expression of VEGF111 in human tissue, which is also highest during menstruation in endometriosis (P = 0.0464). This discovery of the natural production of VEGF111 in human endometrium, as well as the upregulation of VEGFA isoforms during menstruation in endometriosis, may shed further light on the development and progression of the disease, and improve our understanding of the regulation of endometrial angiogenesis.

Two ideas, the Divine and the Other-World, seem to have dominated much of the life of the ancient Greeks and Romans and to have claimed their best energies. To a great extent the culture of classical antiquity is the natural expression of these two predominant religious convictions. When Christianity entered the Graeco-Roman world and gathered its adherents from among both the cultured class and the unlettered masses, it made no violent break with ancient culture but preserved whatever was best in it. On the one hand, the Church sought to suppress whatever militated against its own teaching in these matters; on the other, it readily embraced a number of purely folk customs and practices of virtually spontaneous growth and gave them a new orientation in conformity with Christian principles. In a word, some of the pagan usages and rites were purified and, whenever possible, adapted to Christian worship.

ABSTRACTComparative genomic studies have identified severalMycobacterium tuberculosis-specific genomic regions of difference (RDs) which are absent in the vaccine strains ofMycobacterium bovisBCG and which may be useful in the specific diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). In this study, a total of 775 synthetic peptides covering the sequences of 39 open reading frame (ORF) proteins encoded by genes predicted in five RDs ofM. tuberculosis, i.e., RD1, RD4, RD5, RD6, and RD7, were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for antibody reactivity with sera from HIV-negative pulmonary TB patients (n= 100) andM. bovisBCG-vaccinated healthy subjects (n= 100). The results identified three immunodominant peptides reactive with TB sera, i.e., amino acids (aa) 346 to 370 of RD1ORF Rv3876, aa 241 to 265 of RD6ORF Rv1508c, and aa 325 to 336 of RD6ORF Rv1516c. These peptides had significantly stronger antibody reactivity with sera from TB patients than with sera from healthy subjects (P< 0.05) and significantly higher rates of positivity with TB sera (positives = 66 to 93%) than sera from healthy subjects (positives = 10 to 28%). Antipeptide antibodies were raised in rabbits after immunization with pools of 11 peptides corresponding to each protein. Probing of culture filtrates and whole-cell lysates ofM. tuberculosiswith antipeptide antibodies suggested the natural expression of Rv1516c in whole-cell lysates ofM. tuberculosis. The results suggest the potential of the identified immunodominant RD peptides in the serodiagnosis of TB.

‘Improvisation’ is a provocative word. For some the word is synonymous with lack of discipline, absence of intellectual rigour and anti-musical randomness; for others, it embodies life-giving qualities of freedom, spontaneity and natural expression. The polarisation is equally evident in music education circles: those who regard the process in terms of training and appreciation perhaps favouring the former view, while those who tend towards the notion of education through music doubtless endorsing the latter.

This study is a comparative investigation of Proclus’ and Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite’s positions about “remaining” as demonstrative of the ontological monism. Focusing the attention, first of all, to the Neoplatonist philosopher, who represents polytheism, it comes that “remaining” indicates the state of standstill and unchangeability of those beings which are able to function as productive principles. Thus, a transcendental and a productive plane are identified, a parameter which combines the apophatic with the affirmative approaches. The theory about “unparticipated-participated-participating” brings to the light a middle phase between “remaining” and “procession”, in order the relation “one-multitude” to develop. In Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, “remaining” appears in two planes: a) the transcendent One, which does not take part in the production process, b) the One which includes all the beings in the form of archetypical reasons. Note that this is not an eternal co-existence or an ontological identification of the beings with the One’s substance or a transition from the first One to the second, as Proclus suggests. Pseudo-Dionysius just describes the providential function of the One, which is manifested owing to its goodness. In conclusion, the main difference between the two thinkers is how they conceive the notion of “metaphysical multitude”: in Proclus, it indicates a hierarchy of beings, while, in Pseudo-Dionysius, it expresses the inner richness of the unity. In both the worldviews though, the ontological prospect which is formed is actually an optimistic one.
