This research compares and evaluates different approaches to approximate offense times of crimes. It contributes to and extends all previously proposed naïve and aoristic temporal approximation methods and one recent study [1] that showed that the addition of historical crimes with accurately known time stamps to temporal approximation methods can outperform all traditional approximation methods. It is paramount to work with crime data that possess precise temporal information to conduct reliable (spatiotemporal) analysis and modeling. This study contributes to and extends existing studies on temporal analysis. One novel and one relatively new temporal approximation methods are introduced that rely on weighting aoristic scores with historic offenses with exactly known offense times. It is hypothesized that these methods enhance the accuracy of the temporal approximation. In total, eight different methods are evaluated for apartment burglaries in Vienna, Austria, for yearly and seasonal differences. Results show that the one novel and one relatively new method applied in this research outperform all other existing approximation methods to estimate and predict offense times. These two methods are particularly useful for both researchers and practitioners, who often work with temporally imprecise crime data.

Law enforcement is very interested in knowing when a crime has happened. Unfortunately, the occurrence time of a crime is often not exactly known. In such circumstances, estimating the most likely time that a crime has happened is crucial for spatio-temporal analysis. The main purpose of this research is to introduce two novel temporal approximation methods, termed retrospective temporal analysis (RTA) and extended retrospective temporal analysis (RTAext). Both methods are compared to six existing temporal approximation methods and subsequently evaluated in order to identify the method that can most accurately estimate the occurrence time of crimes. This research is conducted with 100,000+ burglary crimes from the city of Vienna, Austria provided by the Criminal Intelligence Service Austria, from 2009–2015. The RTA method assumes that crimes in the immediate past occur at very similar times as in the present and in the future. Historical crimes with accurately known time stamps can therefore be applied to estimate when crimes occur in the present/future. The RTAext method enhances one existing temporal approximation method, aoristicext, with probability values derived from historical crime data with accurately known time stamps. The results show that the RTA method performs superiorly to all other temporal approximation methods, including the novel RTAext method, in two out of the three crime types analyzed. Additionally, the RTAext method shows very good results that are similar to the best performing existing approximation methods.

The article presents a contemporary view of the study of piyyut, demonstrating that Jewish poetry of late antiquity (in Hebrew and Aramaic) was closely related to Christian liturgical poetry (both Syriac and Greek) and Samaritan liturgy. These relations were expressed primarily by common poetic and prosodic characteristics, derived on the one hand from ancient Semitic poetry (mainly biblical poetry), and on the other from innovations of the period. The significant connections of content between the different genres of poetry reveal the importance of comparative study. Thus the poetry composed in late antiquity provides additional evidence for the lively cultural dialogue that took place at that time.

Leptospirosis has been recognized as a major public health concern in Thailand following dramatic outbreaks. We analyzed human leptospirosis incidence between 2004 and 2014 in Mahasarakham province, Northeastern Thailand, in order to identify the agronomical and environmental factors likely to explain incidence at the level of 133 sub-districts and 1,982 villages of the province. We performed general additive modeling (GAM) in order to take the spatial-temporal epidemiological dynamics into account. The results of GAM analyses showed that the average slope, population size, pig density, cow density and flood cover were significantly associated with leptospirosis occurrence in a district. Our results stress the importance of livestock favoring leptospirosis transmission to humans and suggest that prevention and control of leptospirosis need strong intersectoral collaboration between the public health, the livestock department and local communities. More specifically, such collaboration should integrate leptospirosis surveillance in both public and animal health for a better control of diseases in livestock while promoting public health prevention as encouraged by the One Health approach.

A new twelfth-order four-step formula containing fourth derivatives for the numerical integration of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation has been developed. It was found that by adding multi-derivative terms, the stability of a linear multi-step method can be improved and the interval of periodicity of this new method is larger than that of the Numerov's method. The numerical test shows that the new method is superior to the previous lower orders in both accuracy and efficiency and it is specially applied to the problem when an increasing accuracy is requested.

This paper presents a new method of contact plasticity analysis based on Galerkin vectors to solve the eigenstresses due to eigenstrain. The influence coefficients relating eigenstrains to eigenstresses thus can be divided into four terms the one due to the eigenstrains in the full space, others due to the mirrored eigenstrains in the mirror half space. Each term can be solved fast and efficient by using the three-dimensional discrete convolution and fast Fourier transform (DC-FFT) or the three-dimensional discrete correlation and fast Fourier transform (DCR-FFT). The new method is used to analyze the contact plastic residual stresses in half space.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the Epley maneuver with the Semont maneuver in the treatment of posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and observe differences in the resolution time of symptoms in the short-term follow-up. METHODS: Sixty patients with posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (23 males, 37 females; median age: 44.9 years; range, 14 to 80 years) were included in the prospective randomized comparative study conducted in our clinic between April 2019 and October 2019. Diagnosis and treatment maneuvers were performed under videonystagmography examination. Participants were randomly selected after the diagnostic tests for the Epley maneuver and the Semont maneuver treatment groups. RESULTS: In the evaluation of vertigo with videonystagmography, 25 (83.3%) patients in the Epley maneuver group and 20 (66.6%) patients in the Semont maneuver group recovered in the one-week follow-up, and 28 (93.3%) patients in the Epley maneuver group and 24 (80%) patients in the Semont maneuver group recovered in the two-week follow-up. All patients in the Epley maneuver group recovered at the end of one month; four patients in the Semont maneuver group still had vertiginous symptoms (100% vs. 86.6%, p=0.04). There was a statistically significant difference between the Epley and Semont groups regarding visual analog scores at the one-week, two-week, and one-month follow-ups (p=0.002, p<0.001, p=0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The Epley maneuver was significantly more effective than the Semont maneuver in resolving vertigo in the short-term treatment of posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

AbstractThe geometric model accuracy is crucial for product design. More complex surfaces are represented by the approximation methods. On the contrary, the approximation methods reduce the design quality. A new alternative calculation method is proposed. The new method can calculate both conical sections and more complex curves. The researcher is able to get an analytical solution and not a sequence of points with the destruction of the object semantics. The new method is based on permutation and other symmetries and should have an origin in the internal properties of the space. The classical method consists of finding transformation parameters for symmetrical conic profiles, however a new procedure for parameters of linear transformations determination was acquired by another method. The main steps of the new method are theoretically presented in the paper. Since a double result is obtained in most stages, the new calculation method is easy to verify. Geometric modeling in the AutoCAD environment is shown briefly. The new calculation method can be used for most complex curves and linear transformations. Theoretical and practical researches are required additionally.
