The objective of this study was to use high-resolution cone-beam computed images (hr- CBCT) to diagnose degenerative joint disease in asymptomatic and symptomatic subjects using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders DC/TMD imaging criteria. This observational study comprised of 92 subjects age-sex matched and divided into two groups: clinical degenerative joint disease (c-DJD, n = 46) and asymptomatic control group (n = 46). Clinical assessment of the DJD and high-resolution CBCT images (isotropic voxel size of 0.08mm) of the temporomandibular joints were performed for each participant. An American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology certified radiologist and a maxillofacial radiologist used the DC/TMD imaging criteria to evaluate the radiographic findings, followed by a consensus of the radiographic evaluation. The two radiologists presented a high agreement (Cohen’s Kappa ranging from 0.80 to 0.87) for all radiographic findings (osteophyte, erosion, cysts, flattening, and sclerosis). Five patients from the c- DJD group did not present radiographic findings, being then classified as arthralgia. In the asymptomatic control group, 82.6% of the patients presented radiographic findings determinant of DJD and were then classified as osteoarthrosis or overdiagnosis. In conclusion, our results showed a high number of radiographic findings in the asymptomatic control group, and for this reason, we suggest that there is a need for additional imaging criteria to classify DJD properly in hr-CBCT images.

Among the proposed treatments to repair lesions of degenerative joint disease (DJD), chondroprotective nutraceuticals composed by glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are a non-invasive theraphy with properties that favors the health of the cartilage. Although used in human, it is also available for veterinary use with administration in the form of nutritional supplement independent of prescription, since they have registry only in the Inspection Service, which does not require safety and efficacy testing. The lack of such tests to prove efficacy and safety of veterinary medicines required by the Ministry of Agriculture and the lack of scientific studies proving its benefits raises doubts about the efficiency of the concentrations of such active substances. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a veterinary chondroprotective nutraceutical based on chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine in the repair of osteochondral defects in lateral femoral condyle of 48 dogs, through clinical and radiographic analysis. The animals were divided into treatment group (TG) and control group (CG), so that only the TG received the nutraceutical every 24 hours at the rate recommended by the manufacturer. The results of the four treatment times (15, 30, 60 and 90 days) showed that the chondroprotective nutraceutical, in the rate, formulation and administration at the times used, did not improve clinical signs and radiologically did not influence in the repair process of the defects, since the treated and control groups showed similar radiographic findings at the end of the treatments.

Clinical and radiographic findings after intra-articular replacement of cranial cruciate ligament with a polyester prosthesis using a modified over-the-top technique were evaluated in six dogs. Seven surgeries were done due to bilateral involvement of the cranial cruciate ligament in one dog. Clinical evaluation was performed on postoperative days 3, 10 and 40, and radiographic evaluation was done at 5 and 24 months after surgery in five dogs, where signs of progressive degenerative joint disease were confirmed. Resolution of clinical signs was observed from 25 to 68 days after surgery as evaluated by dog owners. Overall function of joint movement after surgery was classified as good. Two dogs presented fraying of the implant after surgery. It was concluded that the polyester prosthesis, as implanted in these dogs, was not a satisfactory replacement for the injured ligament, as better results may be obtained with less invasive and simpler techniques.

Samples of articular cartilage of femur, tibia and patella of 15 dogs with experimentally induced degenerative joint disease (DJD) were microscopically analyzed. Animals were distributed into three groups (n=5): the control group received no medication; the second group was treated with chondroitin sulfate and the third received sodium hyaluronate. Samples were processed and stained with HE and toluidine blue for morphological evaluation. The metabolic and proliferative activity of the chondrocytes was evaluated by the measurement of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) after impregnation by silver nitrate. Significant differences were not observed (P>0.05) in the morphology among the groups, however, the group treated with sodium hyaluronate had a higher score suggesting a trend to a greater severity of the lesions. Significant differences were not observed (P>0.05) in the measurement of NORs, cells and NORs/cells among the groups. Although differences were not significant, sodium hyaluronate group showed higher NOR and cell counts which suggested an increase of the proliferation rate of chondrocytes. In addition, a higher NOR/cell ratio in the group treated with chondroitin sulfate suggested that this drug may have stimulated the metabolic activity of the chondrocytes, minimizing the lesions resulting from DJD.

A retrospective study was performed describing the clinical presentations, radiographic findings, and surgical outcomes of 17 dogs (18 elbows) following medial coronoidectomy for the treatment of elbow joint incongruity as a sole disease entity. Complete resolution of lameness was achieved in 100% of the cases. The mean radiographic arthrosis grade progressed in 70% of the cases. Results of this study indicate that resolution of clinical lameness may be achieved with medial coronoidectomy in dogs with elbow incongruity; however, progression of degenerative joint disease with unknown, long-term clinical significance can be expected after surgery.

Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is defined as a progressive and permanent long-term deterioration of the cartilage surrounding the joints. There is no known cause for primary DJD. However, there are a wide variety of causes for secondary DJD, such as trauma, abnormal wear of joints and cartilage, or a congenital defect present at birth such as an improperly formed hip. One of the most popular methods used to biologically enhance healing in the fields of orthopaedic surgery and medicine includes the use of autologous blood products, namely, platelet rich plasma (PRP). Reports suggest that PRP, presumably containing high levels of platelet growth factors, may promote the recovery of the affected cartilage. This case series presents clinical and radiographic findings of three dogs with osteoarthritis of the elbow and knee joints. Pain score were assessed by CBPI (Canine Brief Pain Inventory). Treatment with three-fold intra-articular application of PRP, obtained by double centrifugation method, resulted in significant improvement in the function of the affected joint. Therefore, it could be concluded that PRP was clinically effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis in these three cases.

Summary Objectives To compare condylar development and changes in condylar radiological appearance in patients with idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) to a healthy, age- and gender matched, control group. Materials and methods This case-control study included 16 ICR patients [mean age: 15years, 9 months; standard deviation (SD): 4 years) and 16 controls (mean age: 16 years, 8 months; SD: 4 years, 7 months), with diagnostic (T0) and 2-year follow-up (T1) CBCT examinations. Condylar changes were evaluated through changes in condylar neck angle (CNA), and the transversal, vertical and anteroposterior displacement of five condylar points between T0 and T1. The magnitude and direction of condylar changes were evaluated using vector analyses. A qualitative radiological evaluation of the TMJ was performed based on healthy, erosive and repaired morphological appearance. Linear and angular measurements were assessed using ANOVA and a Tukey post-hoc test, and vectors were tested using an independent-sample 2-tailed t-test. Fisher’s exact test was used for the qualitative evaluation. Results At T0, ICR patients exhibited decreased condylar height, smaller condylar width and posteriorly inclined CNA compared with the control group (P < 0.05). During observation, condylar vertical growth was smaller in the ICR group than in the control group (P < 0.05). Vector analysis showed an upward direction of vertical displacement for all condylar points in the control group; the ICR group showed a downward direction (P < 0.003). The radiological appearance of 75% of the ICR condyles and 94% of the control condyles did not change during the 2-year follow-up period. Conclusions ICR condyles displayed reduced vertical development compared with control condyles. The radiological appearance remained unchanged for most joints. Observed changes in radiological appearance did not always follow a progressive model of degenerative joint disease.

Background: Choosing the proper approach to surgical treatment of various types of acetabular fractures can play an important role in minimizing adverse outcomes during and after surgery. In the present study, we described our experience on the outcome of Stoppa approach in anterior column acetabular fractures. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 40 patients with acetabular anterior column fractures that had undergone surgery with Stoppa approach. The study information, Harris Hip Score (HHS), and pre- and post-operative radiographic findings were collected by reviewing the hospital recorded files. Results: HHSs of 80 to 100 were achieved in 75.0% of patients. Completed (anatomic reduction less than 2 mm) displacement reduction was found in 97.5%. 2 mg/dl decreased serum level of hemoglobin (Hb) was found in 75.0%, leading to blood transfusion in 60% of subjects. Regarding post-procedural complications, the common event was infection in 15.0%, followed by degenerative joint disease (DJD) in 15.0%. The post-operative complications were similar in men and women, but were significantly higher in patientsolder than 50 years than the younger patients. Conclusion: Stoppa approach is associated with high success rate and the occurrence of rare and tolerable major complications.

A two-and-a-half-year-old giant lop-eared rabbit, weighing 5.1 kg, presented with a one-month history of intermittent right hind limb lameness. The limb locked in extension during hopping. On examination, a grade-2 medial patellar luxation of the right hind was diagnosed, with associated stifle joint swelling. Radiographic findings of the right stifle comprised periarticular osteophyte formation consistent with mild degenerative joint disease and joint effusion. Surgical correction involving right trochlear wedge recession sulcoplasty and lateral imbrication was carried out to stabilise the patella in the trochlear groove. The right hind limb lameness resolved, and the patella was stable at a 6-month postoperative examination. One year postoperatively, the right patella was luxating again concurrent with bilateral stifle effusions. Euthanasia was performed twenty months after surgery due to recurrent lameness in the right hind limb.
