Three Wishes for Cinderella: Fitting a Czech shoe to a Norwegian foot

In this article, the authors outline arguments explaining the lasting success of the Czechoslovak and East German film Three Wishes for Cinderella (1973). Drawing on newer theories of adaptation, the article addresses the following questions: what mutation did the Cinderella narrative undergo and how did it influence the acceptance of the film adaptation in the Czech and Norwegian context? Are there any non-adaptive explanations for changes in the narrative that can be perceived as a ‘random drift’? How is the persistence of this particular adaptation supported in various cultural contexts? Can we speak about cross-cultural indigenization in the case of Three Wishes for Cinderella? The aim is also to explore the factors that contributed to this cultural phenomenon and to map the journey the adaptation underwent, including the role of NRK public TV and the role of the voice-over. Finally, we discuss whether this adaptation is truly a timeless phenomenon.

This paper is a first report on an interdisciplinary project dealing with cross-cultural communication in health and medicine undertakebn by the Centre for Community Languages in the Professions. In this paper health professionals’ perceptions of communication difficulties are examined, especially their understanding of the role of language in cross-cultural communication. The project revealed that health professionals who had regular contact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds were aware of the influence culture can exert on the attitudes and the behaviour of NESB people in relation to health care. In general they had some difficulty in establishing the role of language in cultural misunderstandings if both parties (interactants) communicated through the same language.

As people live in cross-cultural contexts, there is a need to recognize and appreciate the role of different worldviews and how they shape our understanding of humanity, upbringing, and engagement in social or work environments. The key starting point to enable this is exploring the often-overlooked indigenous philosophies of life such as Ubuntu and examining how such value systems survive alongside opposing or similar traditions. This chapter improves the understanding of cultural values by discussing the central tenets of the African philosophy of Ubuntu, in comparison to the Western ways of life and the strategies that Africans in the diaspora are applying to preserve Ubuntu values. Strategies for promoting Ubuntu in the education system and community settings are also recommended with the goal of enhancing cross-cultural awareness.

We here try to find out the role of pragmatics in the cross-cultural contexts. Pragmatics is the way we convey meaning through communication (Deda, 2013). Other factors beyond competence are the adjustments between contexts and situations that can change the ordinary meaning of elements/sentences according to the language situation. The culture of an organization decides the way employees behave amongst themselves as well as the people outside the organization. Pragmatic culture more emphasis is placed on the clients and the external parties. Customer satisfaction is the main motive of the employees in a pragmatic culture. In linguistics, pragmatic competence is the ability to use language effectively in a contextually appropriate fashion. Pragmatic competence is a fundamental aspect of a more general communicative competence.

The paper deals with communicative cyberpersonality types of aggressive behaviour as a cross-cultural phenomenon. The aim of the article is to distinguish and differentiate communicative cyberpersonality types of aggressive behaviour ssupported by such characteristics of the communicative cyberspace as globalism, virtuality, and anonymity. The relevance of the current investigation is determined by a constantly growing role of computer-madiated communication in a modern person’s life, by the appearance of new types of the Internet users’ interaction, by the display a communicative personality’s new qualities and by the necessity of giving a scientific background to all these appearing and changing phenomena. The analysed material comprises dictionary definitions and modern Russian an English texts selected by the continuous sampling method from different Internet genres, such as forums, blogs, social nets, web-chats, which reflect destructive speech products. The overall number of investigated material is 600 units. The material is analysed using such methods as introspection, conceptual modelling, interpretative analysis and contextual analysis. The analysed material shows that not any naming means of aggressive behaviour in a cyberspace can become a name for a communicative personality type. Communicative personality type should be distinguished on the clear lexicographical representation underlying the concept, its own communicative intensions, definitely chosen communicative strategies and tactics, certain modality and verbal and non-verbal means. Taking into consideration these characteristics one can distinguish the following communicative cyberpersonality types of aggressive behaviour: troll, holy war maker, hater, cyberbuller/cyberbully (cybermobber), shamer (blamer), griefer, cyberstalker.

This paper examines the roles that culture and accounting education play in helping to resolve ethical dilemmas in business. Using a sample of Chinese and Canadian business students, the results show that the Chinese are more willing to sanction a variety of businesses and accounting policy choice decisions that the Canadians consider to be inappropriate and unethical. Furthermore, accounting students are better able to resolve accounting and business dilemmas regardless of their cultural background. Finally, this study finds that the social desirability bias, to present oneself as more ethical than is actually the case, is a cross-cultural phenomenon.

Across diverse cultural contexts, children and adults believe in the existence of religious and supernatural unobservables (e.g., gods, angels) as well as scientific and natural unobservables (e.g., germs, oxygen). In this article, we explore the role of cultural input and testimony in children’s developing beliefs in supernatural and natural unobservables as real. We review cross-cultural research with children and adults on their beliefs about the ontological status of religious and scientific unobservables and the epistemic patterns associated with these beliefs. Based on the evidence, we argue that cultural input plays a central role in the development of belief about supernatural unobservables as real, whereas it plays a less critical role in the development of belief about natural unobservables as real. In the latter case, we argue that direct experiences with the natural world combine with children’s naive theories to generate beliefs about natural unobservable entities and processes as real.

In 2003, Martin Rees referred to the present as “mankind’s final century.” A few years later, Slavoj Žižek wrote that humankind is heading towards “apocalyptic zero-point,” when the ecological crisis will most probably lead to our complete destruction. In his 2017 collection, Diary of the Last Man, Welsh poet Robert Minhinnick offers readers a meditation upon Earth at a liminal moment—on the brink of becoming completely unpopulated. Imagining a solitary human being, living in the midst of environmental collapse, Minhinnick yet entwines different voices—human and non-human—operating across vast spans of time. The speaker of the poems moves freely through different geographies and cultural contexts, but the voice that starts and ends the journey, seems to be the voice of the poet himself: he is the last man on earth, a survivor of ecological disaster. The paper discusses Minhinnick’s collection as a projection of the world we now inhabit into a future where it will exist only in the form of nostalgic memories. The analysis focuses on the role of objects in the construction of the world-within-the poem, where the fragments of human civilization are being claimed by forces of the environment—engulfing sand, progressive erosion—forming a retrospective vision of our “now” which will inevitably become our “past.”
