The effects of four different nutrient levels (60 kg ha-1 N, 0 kg ha-1 P2O5, 0 kg ha-1 K2O; 90 kg ha-1 N, 30 kg ha-1 P2O5, 30 kg ha-1 K2O; 120 kg ha-1 N, 60 kg ha-1 P2O5, 60 kg ha-1 K2O; 150 kg ha-1 N, 60 kg ha-1 P2O5, 60 kg ha-1 K2O), as well as three different seeding rates (300, 500 and 700 seeds m-2) on different winter wheat breeds have been investigated in this publication. The research was established in one growing season (2017/2018), with 5 winter wheat varieties (GK Arató, GK Bagó, Cellule, Lithium, GK Petur), in 4 repeats, on 10 square meter random layout plots in the research farm of the Department of Field Crops Research of National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre, in Szeged-Öthalom. We determined the yield and evaluated our results with analysis of variance according to the different nutrient levels and seeding rates. Increasing the seed density, the yield of winter wheat increased too, in a decreasing rate. Increased nutrient inputs resulted in higher yields. The reaction to the fertilizers was very different among the varieties, we could show different yield order at different nutrient levels and seed density. Our results proved that the use of different varieties and agrotechnical elements cause a big difference in yield, which also determines the economic efficiency of the farm.

The research was established in one growing season (2018), in 4 repeats, on 10 square meter random layout plots in the research farm of the Department of Field Crops Research of National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre, in Szeged-Öthalom. In our investigation we used two different seeding rates (40 and 60 seeds m-2) on two soybean varieties (Pannónia kincse, Bahia). This study was carried out in inoculated field soil and non-inoculated field soil. We determined the yield and evaluated our results with ANOVA according to the different seeding density and varieties. From the results of our one-year survey, we could determine that Bahia had a higher yield than Pannonia kincse, which could be proved at 5% level of significance. Based on this data, we can see that the 60 seeds m-2 plots produced higher yields than the lower seed density (40 seeds m-2) plots. The results show that soybean yields increased as a result of soil inoculation.

The impacts of climate modification were examined in terms of changes in the stress tolerance of winter wheat varieties. The enzyme reactions of two winter wheat varieties to drought stress, simulated by water withholding in three different phenophases, were analysed in a phytotron experiment in the Centre for Agricultural Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Plants were raised either at ambient CO2 level or at twice this concentration. The quantities of glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (POD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were determined from leaf samples collected at the end of the drought treatment.The results showed that antioxidant enzymes may help to counterbalance the reactive oxygen species induced by stress during various stages of the vegetation period. Although there were substantial differences in the changes induced in the activity of individual enzymes by modifications in environmental factors, this activity and its response to stress depended not only on these factors, but also on the developmental stage of the plant. Modifications in enzyme activity could indicate that enhanced CO2 concentration delayed the development of drought stress up to first node appearance, and stimulated antioxidant enzyme activity when drought occurred during ripening.

Relevance. The current paper has presented the study results of the effect of arid growing conditions on water deficit and foliage pigment (chlorophyll) of winter wheat varieties with various productivity.Methods. The study was conducted in 2017–2019. The objects of study were the winter durum wheat varieties ‘Eyrena’, ‘Yubilyarka’, ‘Yakhont’, ‘Yantarina’, ‘Oniks’, ‘Lazurit’ developed in the FSBSI “Agricultural Research Center “Donskoy”. There have been used such methods in the current study as the testing of varieties on drought tolerance in conditions of simulated drought (“zasushnik”) proposed by V.V. Maimistov (1988); the method of identification of chlorophyll content in winter wheat leaves proposed by I.G. Shmatko (1976); the method of identification of residual water deficit proposed by L.S. Litvinov (1988).Results. According to the study results there have been identified the most stable, productive winter wheat varieties ‘Yantarina’ and ‘Lazurit’, which possess mechanisms of adaptation to the water stress conditions. The varieties ‘Yantarina’ and ‘Lazurit’ also possess large productivity and chlorophyll content, as well as the smallest rise of residual water deficit in the increasing aridity with 169.7 and 159.5 g/m2, 1.4 and 1.9 mg/100 g of raw weight, 24.6 and 25.7%, respectively.

Owing to the significant differences in the adaptability of state-registered varieties, those which can adapt well to the local conditions should be given preference. There are several high-yielding varieties available in Hungary with excellent agronomic properties, good adaptability and satisfactory baking quality. This study was conducted to analyse the adaptability of 34 state-registered winter wheat varieties tested in the small plot trials of the National Institute for Agricultural Quality Control (NIAQC) at 5–9 locations between 1994 and 1997 based on their gluten quantity and farinographic index. For the comparison of the varieties the evaluation method of Eberhart and Russell (1966) was applied as modified by Bedő and Balla (1977). The qualitative stability and adaptability values of the varieties differ from the adaptability and stability values calculated from the grain yields. Some winter wheat varieties have good qualitative adaptability and stability, while others have special adaptability and poor qualitative stability, but the majority of the varieties do not belong to these groups.
