This study examines ultraviolet-C (UV-C) treatment supplementation as a means of inhibiting the senescence of pepino fruit after harvest. Pepino fruits were subjected to 1.5 kJ/m2 UV-C treatments and then packed and stored at 10 °C for 28 d. Results showed that 1.5 kJ/m2 UV-C treatment had the greatest ability to maintain firmness, and reduced the level of respiration and ethylene production. Further analysis indicated that the 1.5 kJ/m2 UV-C treatment maintained the content of total soluble solids (TSS), chlorophyll, vitamin C, flavonoids, and total phenolics. Lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and higher levels of antioxidant enzyme activity were found in UV-C treated fruit during storage. An electronic nose (E-nose) and headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) was used to determine volatile compounds. Results revealed that the UV-C treatment may promote the synthesis of a large number of alcohols and esters by maintaining the overall level of acids, aldehydes, and esters in fruits. This may contribute to the maintenance of the flavor of harvested fruits. In conclusion, 1.5 kJ/m2 UV-C treatment was demonstrated to be an effective treatment for the maintenance of the sensory, nutritional, and flavor parameters of pepino fruit.

Background: Current knowledge on antioxidant properties of anesthetics is inconclusive. Nevertheless, experiments on different anesthesia-related drugs and techniques are growing. Objectives: The aim of this prospective blinded randomized study was to assess the effect of dexmedetomidine (Dex) infusion during anesthesia on oxidative stress resulting from lumbar laminectomy. Methods: The antioxidant activity of Dex compared to placebo (normal saline) was evaluated by measuring the antioxidant enzyme activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). A total of 56 patients who underwent laminectomy surgery were allocated into two groups of intervention and control. Dex group received 0.6 µg.kg-1 dexmedetomidine infusion before induction of anesthesia over 15 minutes, followed by 0.4 µg.kg-1.hr-1 maintenance. Control group received the same volume and sequence of normal saline. Anesthesia protocol was similar in both groups. The antioxidant activity of the previously mentioned enzymes was measured at the beginning of the anesthesia (T1) and after surgery (T2). Propofol consumption, hemodynamic indices, shivering, bleeding volume, and pain numeric rating scale (NRS) were recorded. Results: Although the serum levels of CAT and GPX increased during the procedure, these changes were not significant (P-values 0.579 and 0.762, respectively). Also, the mean SOD level did not change over time in any of the groups, and it was not meaningfully different between the groups at any of the predetermined times (P-value 0.665). Conclusions: As expected, Dex decreased propofol consumption, mean heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and pain intensity allover the perioperative period. It seems that adding Dex to anesthesia regimen during laminectomy had no dominant antioxidant effects.

The goal of this study was to identify the zoysiagrass rust pathogens and to analyze the differences in rust-resistant and rust-susceptible Zoysia japonica germplasm upon inoculation. Based on the assessment of spore morphology and 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) molecular identification, the zoysiagrass rust pathogen was identified as Puccinia zoysiae Diet. The development of mycelium, the rate of spreading, and the timing of spore production were more delayed in the rust-resistant (RR) genotype than the rust-susceptible (RS) genotype. After inoculation, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) initially decreased, then increased in both the RR and RS genotypes, but the increased enzyme activities were faster in the RR than in the RS genotype. Rust resistance was positively correlated with antioxidant enzyme activity. The observed changes in CAT, POD and APX activity corresponded to their gene expression levels. The results of this study may be utilized in accurately evaluating the damage of rust disease and rust-resistance in zoysiagrass germplasm aimed at breeding the rust-resistant zoysiagrass varieties and improving disease management of zoysiagrass turf.

With the help of image analysis technology of visual sensors, the research discusses the supplementation of vitamin E on free radicals and physical strength of football players after intensive exercise. The free radical supplementation and physical strength supplementation of athletes after strenuous exercise by taking a proper amount of vitamin E were studied and discussed. The effects of vitamin E on free radical metabolism, serum antioxidant level, and antioxidant enzyme activity and serum lipid peroxide metabolism after acute exercise can be generalized. 40 football players were recruited from the sports department of a physical education college in our province and randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group was divided into the T1 group and the T2 group, and the control group was also divided into the C1 group and the C2 group accordingly, with 10 players in each group. After the football league, the C1 and T1 groups will perform maximal aerobic exercise, and the C2 and T2 groups will perform intermittent anaerobic exercise. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined. The comparison between the control group taking placebo and the experimental group taking vitamin E for a period of time shows that the average values of MDA are 3.25 ± 0.31 (nm/ml) and 4.20 ± 0.78 (nm/ml), respectively. After taking vitamin E, the antioxidant level of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group, serum antioxidant enzyme activity decreased, serum lipid peroxidation products decreased significantly, and more free radicals were generated immediately after aerobic exercise. Vitamin E can significantly reduce the generation of free radicals during football players’ intermittent anaerobic exercise and improve the body’s antioxidant capacity.

Glycinebetaine (GB) is an osmoprotectant found in plants under environmental stresses that incorporates drought and is associated with drought tolerance in several plants, such as the woody pear. However, how GB improves drought tolerance in pears remains unclear. In the current study, we explored the mechanism by which GB enhances drought tolerance of whole pear plants (Pyrus bretschneideri Redh. cv. Suli) supplied with exogenous GB. The results showed that on the sixth day after withholding water, levels of O2·−, H2O2, malonaldehyde (MDA) and electrolyte leakage in the leaves were substantially increased by 143%, 38%, 134% and 155%, respectively. Exogenous GB treatment was substantially reduced O2·−, H2O2, MDA and electrolyte leakage (38%, 24%, 38% and 36%, respectively) in drought-stressed leaves. Furthermore, exogenous GB induced considerably higher antioxidant enzyme activity in dry-stressed leaves than drought-stressed treatment alone on the sixth day after withholding water, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) (201%) and peroxidase (POD) (127%). In addition, these GB-induced phenomena led to increased endogenous GB levels in the leaves of the GB 100 + drought and GB 500 + drought treatment groups by 30% and 78%, respectively, compared to drought treatment alone. The findings obtained were confirmed by the results of the disconnected leaf tests, in which GB contributed to a substantial increase in SOD activity and parallel dose- and time-based decreases in MDA levels. These results demonstrate that GB-conferred drought resistance in pears may be due in part to minimizing symptoms of oxidative harm incurred in response to drought by the activities of antioxidants and by reducing the build-up of ROS and lipid peroxidation.
