Three rod-shaped alkyloxy substituted 4-chloroazobenzene liquid crystals, 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-[4- (alkyloxy)phenyl]diazene (hexayl, octyl and nonyl as flexible oxyalkyl chain) have been synthesized by diazotization of p-chloroaniline with phenol and subsequently performed etherification reaction with different alkyl bromides. The structures of the substituted 4-chloroazobenzene liquid crystals have been characterized by spectroscopic methods. The mesomorphic properties of the liquid crystals were examined by polarizing optical microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All the oxyalkyl homologues of chloro substituted azobenzene showed enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) mesophase, which was understood clearly by the texture of the compounds employing polarizing optical microscope (POM) analysis. During heating scan in DSC analyses melting points, SmA-isotropic temperature and enthalphy changes associated with SmA-isotropic transition showed a remarkable impact on the spacer length of 4-chloro azobenzene derivatives.

Two series of very large discotic complexes of tetrakis (2,3,6,7-tetraalkoxy)triphenylenocyaninato copper(II) (abbreviated as ( C n O )16 TcCu ; n = 8, 10, 12 and 14) and tetrakis(2,3,6,7-tetraalkoxy)-1,4-diazatriphenylenocyaninato copper(II) (abbreviated as ( C n O )16 TzCu ; n = 8, 10, 12 and 14), were synthesized to investigate their mesomorphic properties by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry analysis, polarizing optical microscope observation and temperature-dependent X-ray studies. The results show that each of the ( C n O )16 TcCu derivatives exhibits two or three disordered rectangular columnar ( Col rd ) mesophases from room temperature to the decomposition temperature at ca. 330-340°C under nitrogen gas. However, each of the ( C n O )16 TzCu complexes exhibits only one ordered tetragonal columnar ( Col tet.o ) mesophase in an extremely wide temperature region from room temperature to the decomposition temperature at ca 300°C and ca. 340-350°C under the atmosphere and nitrogen gas, respectively. It is very interesting that the Col tet.o mesophase of ( C n O )16 TzCu for n = 10, 12 and 14 shows remarkable spontaneous homeotropic alignment in a large area, without disclinations and polydomains, in the temperature range from room temperature to the decomposition temperature. As far as we know, these discotic liquid crystals are the first examples to show homeotropic alignment at room temperature. Furthermore, the difference between the mesomorphic properties of ( C n O )16 TcCu and ( C n O )16 TzCu originated only from the additional eight nitrogen atoms in the central core in ( C n O )16 TzCu .

Based on 5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-octylpyrimidine 8, 5-phenylpyrimidine derivatives 3–7, 9 with different spacer chain lengths (C2 up to C6) and different terminal polar groups (Br, Cl, N3, OH, CN) were synthesized by etherification and nucleophilic substitution. The mesomorphic behaviour of these compounds was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (WAXS and SAXS) and revealed smectic A mesophases for bromides, chlorides and azides 3, 4 and 6. For these compounds a maximum phase width was observed for the C5 spacer regardless of the terminal group, whereas the hydroxy- and cyano-substituted derivatives 5 and 7, respectively, were non mesomorphic and showed only melting transitions.

Phase transition temperatures of ferroelectric liquid crystals ((S)-(-)-2-methylbutyl 4′-(4″-n-alkanoyloxybenzoyloxy) biphenyl-4-carboxylates (where n=16 and 18)) are studied through two techniques of image analysis. One is a statistical method, applied to compute the statistical parameters from the textures of each sample and the other, computation of Legendre moments being applied as image moment analysis, both of which are considered as a function of temperature. The textures of the samples are recorded with the polarizing optical microscope (POM) attached to the hot stage and high resolution camera. The phase transition temperatures of samples are inferred by the abrupt changes in the computed parameter values. The results obtained from the present methodology are in good agreement with those published in earlier literature done by the different techniques, like differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

A series of cholesterol liquid crystal compounds was synthesized. Phase-transition temperatures and mesomorphic textures of these synthesized compounds were characterized with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy, respectively. In these molecules the terminal ester chains CnH2n-1COO-, where n was the number of carbon atoms in the terminal ester chains, were linked to the cholesterol core. All of the synthesized cholesterol compounds exhibited mesophases for the first heating. However, as temperature decreased from their clearing points, their micrographs can also be divided into two categories, the first category exhibits branch-like mesophase textures for n in the range of 1-10 while the second category exhibits branch-like crystal textures for n in the range of 11-18.

A series of new rod-shaped liquid crystal, 6-methoxy-2-(4-alkyloxybenzylidenamino) benzothiazoles possessingeven numbers of carbon atoms at the alkyloxy chain (CnH2n+1O-, n = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) are prepared and characterized. The phase behaviour of these new compounds was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. All members exhibited mesophase. Influence of alkyl chain length on the mesomorphic properties was studied. Enantiotropic nematic phase was identified in all the members except for n = 18. Lower member (n = 10) exhibited monotropic (metastable) smectic A phase. The enantiotropic smectic A phase was observed fromn-dodecyloxy derivatives onward to the last homologous synthesized.

One of the most frequently utilized liquid crystalline (LC) materials is a rod-like (calamitic) compound 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5-CB). The main objective of this work is to enhance its functionality by introducing a photoresponsive diazenyl spacer in the aromatic core and replace the non-chiral pentyl chain with various chiral alkyl carboxylate units. The mesomorphic properties of the prepared materials have been studied using polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. It has been found that materials with an extended aromatic system possess the liquid crystalline behavior. The studied LC materials have shown mesophases at lower temperatures than previously reported analogous substances. Furthermore, one of them exhibits a chiral orthogonal frustrated twist grain boundary smectic phase, which has not been previously observed for this structural type of materials. We also investigated photoresponse of the mesophases under illumination with UV-light (365 nm) using a polarizing optical microscope. A non-conventional photoresponse of the prepared materials in a crystalline phase is presented and discussed.

A series of high temperature alkyl and alkoxy biphenyltetracarboxydiimide liquid crystals have been prepared under ball mill method using solvent-free mechanochemical approach. The thermal properties of the prepared compounds were investigated by deferential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements and the textures were identified by polarized optical microscope (POM). The compounds showed smectic mesomorphic behaviour. The results showed the increasing nature of transition temperature Cr-SmC with chain length with increments of the SmC mesophase range. However, the mesophase range of the SmA was decreased with the terminal chain length either for the alkyl or alkoxy terminal groups. Moreover, the DFT theoretical calculations have been conducted give a detailed projection of the structure of the prepared compounds. A conformational investigation of the biphenyl part has been studied. A deep illustration of the experimental mesomorphic behaviour has been discussed in terms of the calculated aspect ratio. A projection of the frontier molecular orbitals as well as molecular electrostatic potential has been studied to show the effect of the polarity of the terminal chains on the level and the gab of the FMOs and the distribution of electrostatic charges on the prepared molecules.

A series of fourteen liquid crystalline monomers and polyoxetanes containing trans-biphenyl side group have been successfully synthesized. The thermal and mesomorphic properties of monomers (1M~14M) and polymers (1P~14P) are measured using DSC, POM, and X-ray. All of the series monomers present enantiotropic smectic H and smectic G phase and the series polymers show enantiotropic smectic A phase which three polymers contained exhibit smectic E. Polyoxetanes have been used as a cationic ring-opening polymerization of oxetane monomers bearing a pendant trans-stilbene mesogenic unit including different spacer length and terminal alkyl length.

Two new compounds, 4-alkanoyloxybenzylidene-4′-fluoroaniline and 4-fluorobenzylidene-4′-n-alkanoyloxyaniline comprising a terminal fluorosubstituent were studied. The fluoro substituent contributes to the molecular polarizability, thus affecting intermolecular interactions and hence resulting in smectic mesomorphism. The mesomorphic properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy techniques. The mesomorphic properties of compounds studied are strongly dependent on the orientation of the imine (CH=N) linkage. The former Schiff base exhibited smectic A phase whereas the latter compound did not display any mesophase. Reversed imine linkage has caused depression of mesomorphic property in the compound studied (4-fluorobenzylidene-4′-n-alkanoyloxyaniline). The mesomorphic properties of the present compounds were compared with other structurally related series to establish the chemical structure-mesomorphic property relationship.
