The study was conducted on male Wistar rats. We used 4 mathematically related series of doses prepared by sequential dilution of water from a man-made lake according to the scheme: arsenic: 0.15 - 0.05 - 0.016 - 0.0055, antimony: 0.68 - 0.227 - 0.075 - 0.025 mg/l. The animals were examined before inoculation (background), on days 40 and 90 of the experiment, taking into account the processes of cumulation of chemical elements in the kidneys. New data on the nature of nephrotoxic effects of arsenic and antimony in the long-term combined intake into the body of laboratory animals have been obtained. Key words: water from a man-made lake, arsenic and antimony compounds, Wistar rats, nephrotoxicity.

A series of novel N2-acryloylhydrazides 1a–m and a related series of compounds 6a–c were prepared as potential chemostimulants. In general, these compounds are cytotoxic to human HCT 116 colon cancer cells, as well as human MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. A representative compound N1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenylcarbonyl)-N2-acryloylhydrazine 1m sensitized HCT 116 cells to the potent antineoplastic agent 3,5-bis(benzylidene)-4-piperidone 2a, and also to 5-fluorouracil. A series of compounds was prepared that incorporated some of the molecular features of 2a and related compounds with various N2-acryloylhydrazides in series 1. These compounds are potent cytotoxins. Two modes of action of representative compounds are the lowering of mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing the concentration of reactive oxygen species.

The Shahrizor Prehistory Project has targeted prehistoric levels of the Late Ubaid and Late Chalcolithic 4 (LC4; Late Middle Uruk) periods at Gurga Chiya (Shahrizor, Kurdistan region of northern Iraq), along with the Halaf period at the adjacent site of Tepe Marani. Excavations at the latter have produced new dietary and environmental data for the sixth millennium B.C. in the region, while at Gurga Chiya part of a burned Late Ubaid tripartite house was excavated. This has yielded a promising archaeobotanical assemblage and established a benchmark ceramic assemblage for the Shahrizor Plain, which is closely comparable to material known from Tell Madhhur in the Hamrin valley. The related series of radiocarbon dates gives significant new insights into the divergent timing of the Late Ubaid and early LC in northern and southern Mesopotamia. In the following occupation horizon, a ceramic assemblage closely aligned to the southern Middle Uruk indicates convergence of material culture with central and southern Iraq as early as the LC4 period. Combined with data for the appearance of Early Uruk elements at sites in the adjacent Qara Dagh region, this hints at long-term co-development of material culture during the fourth millennium B.C. in southeastern Iraqi Kurdistan and central and southern Iraq, potentially questioning the model of expansion or colonialism from the south.

In this paper we show the construction of 32 infinite series based on the law of decay of radioactive isotopes, which indicates that a radioactive parent isotope is reduced by 1/2 and 1/e of its initial value during each half-life and mean life, respectively. We found that the ratios among the values of the radioactive parent isotope and the radiogenic daughter isotope for each half-life’s and mean life’s decay can be used to construct 16 half-life related (or 2-related) and 16 mean life related (or e-related) infinite series. There are 8 divergent series, 4 previously known convergent series and 2 series converging to the Erdös-Borwein constant. The remaining 18 series are found to converge to 18 mathematical constants and the divergent and alternating mean life related series leads to another 2 mathematical constants. A few interesting mathematical relations exist among these convergent series and 5 sequences are also attained from the convergent half-life related series.

A series of analogues ofPseudonocardiasp. natural products were synthesized, which have been reported to possess potent antibacterial activity againstHelicobacter pyloriand induce growth defects inEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureus. Taking inspiration from a methodology used in our total synthesis of natural products, we applied this methodology to access analogues possessing bulky N-substituents, traditionally considered to be challenging scaffolds. Screening of the library provided valuable insights into the structure–activity relationship of the bacterial growth defects, and suggested that selectivity between bacterial species should be attainable. Furthermore, a structurally related series of analogues was observed to inhibit production of the virulence factor pyocyanin in the human pathogenPseudomonas aeruginosa, which may be a result of their similarity to thePseudomonasquinolone signal (PQS) quorum sensing autoinducer. This provided new insights regarding the effect of N-substitution in PQS analogues, which has been hitherto underexplored.

In 1963 and 1964, Japanese artist Akasegawa Genpei was working on two related series of objects he called “model” 1,000 Yen-notes and “model” wrapped objects. As he established in his 1964 “Thesis of ‘Capitalist Realism,'” he made these “models” as a method of exposing the contingent legitimacy that mass-produced currency and commodities had as “real things.” This article focuses its analysis on Akasegawa's wrapped furniture installation for Room in Alibi (1963) as a complex demonstration of the ways in which the model could “frame” capitalism's emerging consumer lifestyle object systems. As such, his models can be seen as part of a larger discursive engagement with questions about domestic reality emerging at the conjunction of Neo-Dada, Pop, Nouveau Réalisme, happenings, and Fluxus in 1963–64. They ran parallel to other experimental models, scores, games, instructions, and demonstrations, which often, and surprisingly consistently, also used domestic furniture and objects (such as Gerhard Richter and Konrad Lueg's use of model living room sets in Living with Pop—A Demonstration for Capitalist Realism).
