The Dr. Salatiel Square, located at Marechal Bittencourt Street in the historical center of the São João del-Rei city, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, appeared in the twentieth century during the period of hygienism. It was inserted in a place that over the years suffered several modifications on its morphology. The work aims to study the landscape aspects and socio-cultural evolution of this square. This work execution consisted of the two steps: field research for the identification of the historical square significance, and a research that was carried out in the historical collections of the city. During the field research, it was collected the current state of Dr. Salatiel Square as well as its uses and potentials, and its botanical composition. Analyzing the square and its surroundings, and also the information collected in São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, it was possible to verify that the site, which nowadays the Dr. Salatiel Square is placed, was occupied before by European influenced houses that were overthrown later in the period of hygienism. Among all the nomenclatures already attributed to the street that shelter the square, the best known by population is Cachaça’s Street due to the commerce of the time which favored the nightlife and bohemia. The square in study is part of the historical center of the city, and all its surroundings are overturned. However, the square has faced significant constructive and botanical modifications on its structure constituting a space characterized by the abandonment due to factors such as accumulation of garbage and great flow of vehicles. From the carried out study, it was verified that the number of information about the place is scarce, so that the continuation of its historical rescue is of great importance for means of preserving the history of the city and the population.

É fator impulsionante no desenvolvimento?

Abstract

The history of the city of Conceição do Mato Dentro (CMD) is similar to the reality of many other mining towns at Minas Gerais state, mainly with the gold mining in the XVIII century. Nowadays the city is the center of investments in a region where the economy is based on ecological tourism and iron ore exploitation. However, there are a lot of controversy and questions about the actual role of mining in the development of the territory where occurs: economies based in mining have more problems than advantages to drive the process of economic and social development? Can the mining to limit the ability of expansion of other productive sectors? Or is it an propulsor factor to development? Aside from the controversy over this issue, the fact is that the mining activities generate impact (positive and negative) and, often, the demographic official census data do not measure this dynamic in the short term. This article, aimed to analyze the case of the mining municipality of Conceição do Mato Dentro, aims to analyze the potential impacts of mining activity in migratory and economic dynamics location. However, the data were extracted of the Demographic Census (2000 and 2010) and of the Annual Social Information (RAIS 2006-2012), including another official institutions. In general, it was noted that the changes observed in the Census data were not sensitive to the current reality, indicating, for example, negative growth rates and small increases in the flow of migrants bound for the municipality of Conceição do Mato Dentro. However, the more recent official datas demonstrate the considerable increase in the amount of the total fleet (includes bus, motocycle, car, truck and minibus), the GDP, the municipal levy and companies and employees related to the mining sector, mainly in civil construction and trade and services. The last two sectors demonstrated relative Increase of 333 % and 102% from 2006 to 2012, respectively.

Keywords: Mining; Migration; Conceição do Mato Dentro/MG.

ABSTRACT This article discusses the seizure of assets owned by the participants in the Minas Gerais State separatist movement known as the Inconfidência Mineira in Brazil, and whether these seizure records may serve as a source for research on the history of books, libraries, and general reading habits in Minas Gerais in the second half of the eighteenth century. First, the historical context of books and the intersection between the seizures and the region’s literary culture were examined. The possibilities and the limits to the use of these seizure records in the study of private libraries is also analyzed. Finally, some of the conspirators’ reading habits, which were influenced by the revolutionary ideas that circulated Europe and North America, are presented.

Abstract SARS-CoV-2 has spread rapidly around the world, with Brazil currently considered an epicenter of the pandemic. The northern region of the country has the highest incidence and mortality rates. This study aimed to investigate information about the evolutionary history of epidemic spread and genetic aspects of strains isolated on the Western Amazon, in the State of Rondônia, Brazil. It was possible to detect a total of 22 mutations. Some of these alterations may possibly be related to effects on transmissibility, the fidelity of RNA replication, the ability of cancer patients to respond to infection, beyond a mutation that emerged after the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Rondônia. At least two events of introduction were detected, corresponding to the B.1 and B.1.1 European lineages. An introduction was observed possibly through Argentina, where strains originated that circulated in the Minas Gerais and Ceará Brazilian states, prior to Rondônia (B.1.), as well as through the Minas Gerais state and the Federal District, which gave rise to strains that spread to Rondônia, from the capital to more rural parts of the state (B.1.1.). The findings show the need to monitor the genetic epidemiology of COVID-19, in order to surveil the virus’s evolution, dispersion and diversity.

In Yerevan, as well as in a number of other Armenian cities, gardens were designed and constructed mainly during the Soviet era, and most of them were transformed, distorted and devastated in the first decade of the period of independence. In the last decade, a unique number of gardens/parks have been built or reconstructed in Yerevan. The city of Yerevan needs this kind of investigation. To observe and analyse the current state of gardens and parks, architectural and design structures as well as compositional design issues and problems concerning Yerevan’s gardens and parks can be the first study in the Armenian history of design and architecture We still do not have any information about similar research efforts in the given sphere carried out in the countries neighbouring Armenia and other foreign countries. This article presents the right process of modernization and/or construction of gardens/parks based on the study of the best models envisions and requires application and implementation of different tools of compositional design and modification not only in the design proper of gardens/parks, but also in the external design and aesthetic nuances of the adjacent surrounding, leaving any compositional design setup unchanged.

Abstract

This study was conducted in the municipality of Rio Acima (Minas Gerais State) located in the southern Belo Horizonte metropolitan region. In the first stage five different topographic bases were used to lay down the city permanent preservation areas (PPA) according to the Law 12,651 and CONAMA resolution 303/2002 (the latter to delimit the hilltop’s PPAs PPAs). These bases are the following: the vector at a 1:50.000 scale provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), SRTM image, image provided by INPE Topodata project, ASTER V2 Image and a vector base released by Codemig with 10 meters contour distance. In the second stage the areas of each one PPA classes were calculated resulting from all mapping bases. Then these values were compared. Finally it was observed that the results obtained from the ASTER V2 image and IBGE base are those with more restrictive features or in other words the result with lager PPAs. Moreover, the map of permanent preservation areas made from SRTM image showed the least restrictive character. This study also discusses other differences between the maps drawn from the five bases.

Keywords: Rio Acima municipality, permanent preservation areas, digital elevation models, spacial resolution.

A new species of Anthurium (A. mucuri E.G.Gonç. & L.F.A. de Paula) is described and illustrated. It occurs in rocky outcrops (inselbergs) in Minas Gerais state, Southeastern Brazil and it is so far know from a restricted area around the city of Teófilo Otoni. It seems to be closer to Anthurium viridispathum E.G.Gonç., but differs mainly in having smaller overall dimensions, a much narrower leaf blade and spathe and for the spathe that is glaucous in the inner surface. Anthurium mucuri is placed in the section Urospadix Engl. subsection Obscureviridia Engl.

Considered as the first village from Minas Gerais state, Mariana has important cultural and historical collections from the Brazilian colonial period. Currently the city has three squares in the historic center, and they are recognized for the historical heritage. Gomes Freire’s Square, set in the historic center of Mariana, has two interesting characteristics: its location behind the Main Church and the intensity use by many social groups in this city, furthermore the large presence of tourists. In the prospect of meeting its historical evolution, and identify the landscape representation in the collective unconscious of Mariana’s inhabitants, it was analyzed the evolution of the village and formation of the Gomes Freire’s Square. To achieve this goal it was necessary to deepen the knowledge of the social appropriation of this space over time, enabling the identification of the same, as well as its evolution as a public place. The study focused its interest in the village evolution, in the uses and social representation of the covered space. For this, the methodology applied was an interface between the inventive analysis, subjective method analysis, and recommendations for preservation of historic gardens. Gomes Freire’s Square, in its formation process presented as remarkable feature in its historical dimension, the fact that emerged and remained as a space of popular demonstrations.
