Biomechanical characteristics of the rabbit cartilage component from the femur were investigated. The control osteoporosis had been activated by ovariectomy alongside the injections of methylprednisolone. During the experiment defects in the femur’s greater trochanter zone was created and afterwards filled with the fragments of a hydroxyapatite as well as tricalcium phosphate (HAP/TCP 70/30) or HAP/TCP 70/30 mixed with five percent strontium. Three months later animals were euthanazed, squared samples were cut out from the femur’s body and later tested on a bend. The results of the research revealed that the femurs become more stringent after filling off defects in the greater trochanter zone with HAP/TCP 70/30 or HAP/TCP 70/30 mixed with five percent strontium. The ultimate pain for the cartilage component in the control groups was less, than in the test group. The flexure modulus of flexibility of a cartilage component in the test group was statistically reliable less, than the value of the flexure modulus of flexibility of the cartilage component in the control groups.  Therefore, local usage of calcium – phosphatic bioceramic component over the greater trochanter part increases biomechanical characteristics of the cartilage component in the femur of animals.

Investigation of biomechanical properties of the rabbit bone tissue from a corner of the lower jaw was done. Experimental osteoporosis was induced by ovariectomy and following injections of methylprednisolone. The defects in the greater trochanter region was created and filled with granules of a hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate (HAP/TCP 30/70) or HAP/TCP 30/70 together with 5% strontium ranelate. After 3 month animals were euthanased, squared samples have been cut out from a corner of the lower jaw and tested on a bend. Results of research show, that the corner of a lower jaw in rabbit becomes more rigid after filling of defects in the greater trochanter region with granules of a hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate (HAP/TCP 30/70) or granules together with strontium ranelate. The ultimate strain for the bone tissue in the 2nd and 3rd group is less, than for control group. Thus, local uses calcium – phosphatic bioceramic material around the greater trochanter region improves biomechanical parameters of a bone tissue in the lower jaw of animals.

Introduction: The role of virgin coconut oil in the treatment of allergic rhinitis is controversial. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the effects of virgin coconut oil ingestion, in addition to standard medications, on allergic rhinitis. We also studied the side effects of consumption of virgin coconut oil. Methods: Fifty two subjects were equally divided into test and control groups. All subjects received a daily dose of 10mg of loratadine for 28 days. The test group was given 10ml of virgin coconut oil three times a day in addition to loratadine. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis were scored at the beginning and end of the study. Results:, the symptom score were divided into nasal and non-nasal symptom scores. Sneezing score showed a significant difference, however the score was more in control group than test group, indicating that improvement in symptom was more in control group. The rest of the nasal symptom and non-nasal symptom score showed no significant difference between test and control groups. Approximately 58% of the test subjects developed side effects from consumption of virgin coconut oil, mainly gastrointestinal side effects. Conclusion: In the present study, ingestion of virgin coconut oil does not improve the overall and individual symptoms of allergic rhinitis, furthermore it has side effects.

Background: The relationship between SLE and traditional risk factors for cardiovascular events was evaluated. Methods: The data regarding sixty patients with SLE and 30 healthy controls (age and sex matched) were gathered using SLEDAI forms. Venous blood (10mL) from all the participants was examined for hs-CRP, homocysteine, VCAM1, CBC, anti-DNA antibody, C3, C4, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, FBS and triglyceride. : The IMT of carotid arteries was determined bilaterally by ultrasound. Other measurements included insulin levels via Elisa (Linco/Millipore Corp) and the HOMA-IR index for insulin resistance. Results: The mean age (in years) in the test and control groups was 28.8±10.3 (18-52) and 33.8±9.13 (18-48), respectively. Results: The mean age (in years) in the test and control groups was 28.8±10.3 (18-52) and 33.8±9.13 (18-48), respectively. : The average IMT in the test group was directly related to serum levels of VCAM1 (p<0.001), homocysteine (p<0.001), cholesterol (p<0.009), LDL (p<0.001), TG (p<0.001), and FPG (p=0.004). The association between other risk factors, insulin resistance, carotid IMT and SLEDAI, was nonexistent. Mean insulin and insulin resistance levels in all the participants were 0.43±2.06 µU/mL and 0.09±0.44, respectively. There was no significant difference between the test and control groups regarding serum insulin and insulin resistance levels (p=0.42 and p=0.9, respectively). None of the risk factors, such as hsCRP, VCAM1, or homocysteine, were shown to be related to insulin resistance (p=0.6, p=0.6, p=0.09, respectively). Conclusion:: Our findings did not show an increase in the prevalence of atherosclerosis in patients with SLE. There was no association between IMT and insulin resistance. However, the former was associated with FPG, total cholesterol, LDL, TG, homocystein and VCAM1.

AbstractNowadays, artificial bone materials have been widely applied in the filling of non-weight bearing bone defects, but scarcely ever in weight-bearing bone defects. This study aims to develop an artificial bone with excellent mechanical properties and good osteogenic capability. Firstly, the collagen-thermosensitive hydrogel-calcium phosphate (CTC) composites were prepared as follows: dissolving thermosensitive hydrogel at 4 °C, then mixing with type I collagen as well as tricalcium phosphate (CaP) powder, and moulding the composites at 37 °C. Next, the CTC composites were subjected to evaluate for their chemical composition, micro morphology, pore size, Shore durometer, porosity and water absorption ability. Following this, the CTC composites were implanted into the muscle of mice while the 70% hydroxyapatite/30% β-tricalcium phosphate (HA/TCP) biomaterials were set as the control group; 8 weeks later, the osteoinductive abilities of biomaterials were detected by histological staining. Finally, the CTC and HA/TCP biomaterials were used to fill the large segments of tibia defects in mice. The bone repairing and load-bearing abilities of materials were evaluated by histological staining, X-ray and micro-CT at week 8. Both the CTC and HA/TCP biomaterials could induce ectopic bone formation in mice; however, the CTC composites tended to produce larger areas of bone and bone marrow tissues than HA/TCP. Simultaneously, bone-repairing experiments showed that HA/TCP biomaterials were easily crushed or pushed out by new bone growth as the material has a poor hardness. In comparison, the CTC composites could be replaced gradually by newly formed bone and repair larger segments of bone defects. The CTC composites trialled in this study have better mechanical properties, osteoinductivity and weight-bearing capacity than HA/TCP. The CTC composites provide an experimental foundation for the synthesis of artificial bone and a new option for orthopedic patients.

Background: Mangosteen and propolis extracts (MAEC) have been potential therapeutic agents known to exhibit powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical and immunological efficacy of MAEC as well as safety and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) on gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. Methods: This study was performed on 104 patients diagnosed with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis. At baseline, the participants were randomly allocated to either the test group, with daily intake of a single capsule containing 194 mg of MAEC for eight weeks, or control group, with placebo. Clinical periodontal evaluation and immunological parameters from saliva and gingival sulcular fluid were assessed at baseline, four, and eight weeks. Individual PROMs were assessed by OHIP-14 questionnaires. Results: There was a significant difference of modified gingival index at four and eight weeks between the test and control groups. In the test group, crevicular interleukin (IL)-6 was reduced, and the salivary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 was increased after eight weeks. PROMs were improved up to four weeks compared to placebo. Conclusion: Oral administration of MAEC would have a potential to reduce gingival inflammation clinically and immunologically in the patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.

Calcium phosphate cements have bioactivity and osteoconductivity and can be molded and replace portions of bone tissue. The aim of this work was to study the obtainment of α-tricalcium phosphate, the main phase of calcium phosphate cement, by wet reaction from calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid. There are no reports about α-tricalcium phosphate obtained by this method. Two routes of chemical precipitation were evaluated and the use of two calcinations temperatures to obtain the phase of cement. The influence of calcination temperature on the mechanical properties of cement was evaluated. Cement samples were characterized by particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction, mechanical strength and scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrate the strong influence of synthesis route on the crystalline phases of cement and the influence of concentration of reactants on the product of the reaction, as well as, on the mechanical properties of cement.
